  • Did you try other diets? Why did you choose Atkins?

    I've tried the 1200-calorie diet...which was idiotic because I was always hungry and felt like I was being punished for being fat.

    I lost some weight with South Beach, but for some reason couldn't stay on it for too long. It's a good program, it's just not for everyone.

    I tried the Zone...briefly. I know someone who swears it was the best thing ever, but I just couldn't get into it. Didn't work.

    I tried South Beach again, and went from 182 (or more) to 176.

    Then I read more about Atkins, and found that the way I did it 6 years ago was wrong-all I ate was meats and fats (how on earth did I get that wrong?!! ). I read I can have veggies and even berries later, so I tried it. I am convinced that this is the WOL that works for me! It works, it works, and it just plain works!

    I was a lacto-ovo vegetarian a number of years, then I became a vegan for 2 years. I gained weight on my vegetarian diet.

      I tried a low calorie diet when I was in my early 20's. I got sick of eating salad and could only stay on it for about a week. I don't even think I lost 1 pound.

      I found Atkins about 4 years ago. It was easy to maintain and I lost a TON of wieght quickly. I was scheduled to speak at a conference 6 weeks after the day I first started Atkins and I ended up losing 25 lbs. before the event. Needless to say, it made a huge difference and it made me feel good. I stayed on the diet for 2 years. My boyfriend always commented that I ate a lot, but stayed skinny. I fell off the diet when I closed my business and started being a stay at home mom. I started cooking the worst meals ever for my family & I (biscuits every night along with a high carb side & dessert). I gained all my 30 pounds back. :-(

      So, I've started again and will get back to "my size". Atkins is the best because it's a diet that works better then any other AND I can eats tons of great food. It's ideal.

        I went on a vegetarian diet once, but not for weight loss reasons. I ate anything that was non-meat. I think I gained weight too...LOL

          I tried 1000 calories a day...or was it 1200, when I was 15, but I wouldnt eat all day and save up all my calories for when I got home from school so I could pig out on crisps and chocolate.
          I did Slim Fast. The milkshakes were gross and I got bored.
          I did Weigh Watchers, points programme. I think I got bored of that too.
          I did Slimming World and yes, you guessed it, got bored with that too!

          All of the above never gave me the results that Atkins has. I lost 1-2lbs a week, which for me is incredibly slow and disappointing when you know you've been so good and following the book to a T.
          10lbs in the first 2 week sof Atkins. Yes, its mostly water weight but my god what a motivation!

          Did Atkins on and off from Feb 2005 until April 2008. Fluctuated between 15 st 1/211lbs and 11 st 1/155lbs.
          On different weightloss programme from 28th May 2008 start weight 14 st 11/207lbs.
          Current weight 10st 3lbs/143lbs.
          Ultimate Goal Weight 9 st/126lbs.

            I will die of old age before I finish listing all the diets I've been on so I won't start. One of the ones I tried was Fit For Life which is pretty much vegetarian. I could eat nothing but fruit in the morning. Aside from being so hungry I could eat my shoes, I gained 5 lbs a week on that one. I know some people who still eat that way and they have no problems, but it's not the plan for me. Now I know all that fruit sugar and lack of fat was probably sending my insulin levels on some kind of roller coaster ride.

            As you say Jcap, it works. Even though I have my struggles I am sticking with it. I'm in control, I'm not hungry, I'm not obsessing about food and I'm having a much healthier relationship with food these days. This is the last "diet" I will ever go on because it's just becoming a way of life.

              I went to a dr about my weight loss and she gave me a plan that was 1200 calories. I was starving all the time and that would cause me to cheat and then I felt really bad about myself. I also tried a Richard Simmons thing where you close the windows of different foods. That worked for a little while but was very slow. I have tried many other diets but nothing that worked as well as Atkins or as fast. I have so far lost about 40lbs. And to me it is easy to eat out and eat at peoples houses because there is usually something you can eat!

                I tried the one where you and 5 friends sit around a table sweating with clenched fists and when someone tries to run for the fridge everyone gets up and tackles him and drags him back to the table

                        I tried the "starvation diet" as a teen and developed an eating disorder. Yes I lost weight but the second I ate ANYTHING! EVEN A LETTUCE LEAF I gained like 3 lbs it seemed. SOOOO unhealthy.

                        Went on southbeach for about 3 days and lost about 2 lbs. I dont think it was the diet though I think it was just that i cut out my sweets and was active that weekend. The diet left me craving uncontrollably!

                        You cant take my carbs AND my fat!!!!

                        So here I am again with what i know works.

                            I tried about everything as well and gave up for a long time, telling myself I needed to accept being the fat kid the rest of my life.

                            Just about that time my best friend came to town 60 lbs lighter and ripped. I had just seen him a year before and he was just under my starting weight. He educated me on how Atkins was really done and opened my eyes to real health. I started the diet that day and have been on it since July 16, 2004. I'll never go back.

                              I've been on WW, low-calorie, slimmons, Jenny Craig, Nutra-system, Aydes (candy), all the over the counter diet pills, Elaine Powers, cabbage soup, grapefruit, scarsdale, mushroom and many many more. I chose Atkins because my daughter's girlfriend lost a lot of weight on low-carb (not Atkins). I was doing my own low-carb and happened to find the ADBB while looking up a few recipes. I joined and the rest is history as they say.
