  • Does this WOE cause irreversible hair loss?

I'm losing hair - at an astounding rate. Some would say it's because I'm losing weight too fast, but I've only lost 9.5 pounds in 2 months - according to the "experts", that's just about the right amount for that length of time. I've looked at my diet and I've never drank so much water, eaten so many vegetables, exercised so much, and I'm even taking vitamins for the first time in my life.....so what gives? This is healthy, so why isn't my hair? I'm heading to the doctor today for a blood test to see where I'm deficient. After I had the kids, postpartum, I had hair loss too, but that was hormone related. Even if the doctor tells me that I need to eat differently, what would that mean? Add back the bad carbs and sugar? My diet today looks like this:

Breakfast: 1/2 cup Yogurt with walnuts
Lunch: 1/2 can of tuna with 1 tablespoon mayo, 2 cups lettuce, 1/2 red pepper, 2 tbs dressing
Dinner: 1 serving Linda's Italian Chicken Casserole, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 red pepper.
    64 ounces of water
    1 Carb Smart One-A-Day vitamin.

How can I improve?? Honestly, how is this bad? I'm going to GNC and picking up a hair health vitamin this morning. Hopefully that will help.

Not irreversible. It'll come back. It seems like people start losing hair after 2-3 months of being on the diet, it lasts 2-3 months, and then it stops falling out. Course, you lose a lot of hair in the meantime, but well, such is life. :P

jenny, i take an extra combination of vitamins specifically for hair, skin and nails. without it i have more hair loss, with it, the loss slows down. i don't think at all it's related to this woe, not at this stage of the game. all hormonal and the natural scheme of things being the age i am.

I have never had hair loss on this diet but I had a lady at work that tried the diet and she said her hair fell out and she was really sick and went to the doctor and he said she had protien poisining. I had never heard of this.

I lost a lot of hair in the Winter of 2004 & Spring of 2005 (about one year after starting Atkins). I took Nioxin supplements for a few months and increased my carb intake (I'd remained on extended induction the entire time) and my hair was pretty much back to normal by Winter 2005.

Mine has never been better. I do eat more veges and take more supplements than you. I try to have at least 6-7 different veges every day. From the following: red onion, green beans, snow peas, fennel, celerieac, zucchini, yellow squash, cauliflower, broccoli, lettuce, tomato, celery, parsley, carrot (a couple of times a week). I use lots of herbs in my cooking.

              I take, daily:
              1 x multivitamin
              3 x calcium/magnesium/vit D
              2 x fish oil
              1 x flax seed oil
              1 x zinc
              2 x echinacea
              1 x vitamin E
              2 x cayenne tablets

Once a week I give my hair an oil treatment. On the day it is due for a wash first thing after I get up I rub almond oil into it and it stays on for a couple of hours until I wash it.

Thank you for the replies, everyone! I wish my doctor were as quick as all of you with a response!!! I went out and bought Time Release Vitamins for the hair at the health store today, so we'll see. I took my first one (1 of 3) and my pee was fluorescent yellow - a little unnerving when you don't expect it, but I Googled "fluroescent pee" (haha) and it came up with the answer "excess vitamin supplements taken that the body doesn't need will void through the urine, turning it fluorescent yellow or green in color". Phew! I thought I had bigger problems than hair loss for awhile!!!

Re: Does this WOE cause irreversible hair loss?

Hi, just wanted to add my say. I have been doing atkins since 2003 but got real loose with it and then fell off completely in October of last year. When I first started in 2003 I lost a lot of hair (and I am talking 30 in the hand at a time, not just l or 2) when combing, shampooing, or drying. It did stop back then, then I restarted with induction in late January of this year and lo and behold there I was back with the same thing. Good news, although I lost tons just like the first time, it now, I can happily report did stop. I probably had a good 6 months of losing it though, the hairdresser was making comments on it every month when I'd do to get my hair touched up. I have little sprouty (uncontrollable of course) new growth so I know that it was not permanent loss. Sorry this seems like a novel but hope it helps ease your mind somewhat along with the other posters.

PS) It never did get scalp thin so you shouldn't worry about that either.

I dont care if I end up bald as long as Im thin, healthy, and have a nice wig! HAHA! No, seriously, Mine is horribly thin naturally so with the extreme hairloss I have been experiencing is gotten me kinda worried as well. When i part my hair it looks horrible cause the part is too big and its very noticeable I dont have enough hair!!!! but as long as its not permanent and it WILL grow back Im okay with it. I have really long hair and know if I cut it off above my shoulders it will give it more of a full look (and i wont have the super long handfulls) but I am growing mine for "Locks of Love" to donate so I cant yet. Not until next spring.

What's the reason for hair loss?
I've never heard of this before.

I just started taking Biotin. You can get it at WalMart for like $6.. I think there are 100 tabs per bottle.. I can't find it right now! I lost hair due to being diabetic last year and also due to stress from a relationship gone bad. It's growing back, slowly.. But I have an odd shapped hairline on my forehead now!

A few months ago I was really losing my hair... I had been taking lots of vits including biotin... I'm not so sure they helped w/ hair loss at all... infact I've read that biotin doesn't help hair growth, it just makes it healthier...? who knows!

My hair loss has stopped and is starting to come back (little baby hairs all over my head are proof )... I quit taking all my vits (and biotin) a few months ago, maybe it was just the timing but it seems like the loss slowed/stopped shortly after...
