    Re: Atkins Diet Videos

I hope you like them, and if you have any ideas for new ones, please let me know before I go into full Mike Rowe (ala Dirty Jobs) mode and start begging.

      Re: Atkins Diet Videos

Hi Kent, I wanted to just mention I enjoy your videos, they've been a big help. I am a marathoner and have started eating low carb around Mid-January but had still wondered how I would do on longer runs without the gels I was used to using so much in my previous halfs and my first full marathon last year. I want this year to be different and I want my running to be different. I don't want to have to use "crutches" like gels or gatorade just to have the energy I need to finish like I needed before. However I am scared to undertake this first half marathon of this year completely low carb. I have taken to drinking Powerade Zero (0 sugar, 0 carbs) for sodium, potassium and B vitamin replacement but wanted to know if you've had any experience yet with this new drink. Any tips for this scaredy cat? I have done a 12 miler with only one gel but honestly, I could have done without it and it didn't help - what helped was the water I had in my Camelbak! Lol. Should I just bring the camelbak and a packet of salt or salt tablets like you recommend in your video for endurance athletes or just fill my Camelbak with Powerade Zero and pick up plain water along the course? Though I suppose the old adage of "race just like you trained" using the same electrolyte solutions I used to complete my training runs would be the way to go...correct me if I am wrong but I suppose the "pat on the back" from a fellow low carber with half marathon experience will really help assure me that I can do this without carbo loading!!! That's what I am used to doing so this is sort of freaking me out!

Thanks so much for your help!!! You've done a lot of hard work with those videos and they really are so very helpful.

If you check out my electrolyte drink video, you'll see what I use. Powerade zero is ok, but a bit low in terms of electrolytes especially for a long run. I prefer Optima Replenisher - it's about 2-1 Potassium to Sodium as opposed to Powerade's 1-1 ratio.

Really my suggestion is to either stash the bottle of Powerade or electrolyte drink along the route, or wearing the camelback or Nathan Fuelbelt is a fine idea as well. I am not as much in favor of the salt tablets as I think salt without potassium is not going solve the problem. There are Endurolyte tablets that combine both. You can also look for Nym or Nun tablets.

You are definitely on the right route, and it can definitely be done the low carb way. You just have to figure out what works best for you. For me, it is either the stash method or pre-positioning my wife or kids along the route with drinks. I usually alternate every 3.5-4 miles water , electrolyte drinks. (usually 16 oz bottle that I carry with me for awhile)

I hope this helps, and let me know how your training is going. I have a half mary this weekend in prep for my full marathon on June 6.

I may just order the Nun tablets, they look pretty good and I can add them to a 16oz water bottle along the way pretty easily. I will try these for after my race on the 1st as I don't think they'd arrive soon enough beforehand to train with them but I will work them into my training for later! Thanks! As for the race, I will probably just stick with powerade in my camelbak and water from the volunteers along the way. I think it will work out nicely. I tried to find the Morton Lite salt you mentioned in your video to make my own and the stores I have looked at didn't even have it. So sad! But I like the idea of making my own in the future if I can find the right salt!
