    Re: Coffee...please help

Good - that reminded me also, at work now I'll have my cup, and when I've drunk about half (and it is gotten cold) I add hot water to top it off and drink it this way, sometimes repeating this a 3rd time by mid-afternoon. By then it is very watered down but still just 1 cup coffee; also I, like choeve, drink my water along side of the coffee.

      Re: Coffee...please help

I never gave up my coffee either. I did try switching to half caff for a while, then full decaf, but it made no difference to my weightloss. I really enjoy my coffee so i went back to my regular full caff brand.

Sorry, 2big, I was in a hurry, I didn't mean to say that you said the chemical is extracted from fruits. I was referring to what I saw at wikipedia.
        The info:
        Direct method

In the direct method the coffee beans are first steamed for 30 minutes and then repeatedly rinsed with either methylene chloride or ethyl acetate for about 10 hours. The solvent is then drained away and the beans steamed for an additional 10 hours to remove any residual solvent. Sometimes, coffees decaffeinated using ethyl acetate are misleadingly referred to as "naturally processed" because ethyl acetate can be derived from various fruits or vegetables. However, for the purpose of decaffeination, it is not possible to create such a large quantity of ethyl acetate, thus the chemical is synthetically derived

          Re: Coffee...please help

Yep, I still drink my coffee... actually conducted a little experiment about 3 months ago where I monitored hunger, weight loss, energy, and mood both on and off the coffee.

I decided it was all a wash.

I also remember back when Dr. Atkins was alive that Atkins Nutritionals was selling a metabolism-boosting supplement that had a ton of caffeine (as guarana) in it. So it seems like caffeine would be at least somewhat compatible (and potentially beneficial) with the diet. I have an old Atkins catalog (in which it was featured) kicking around this apartment somewhere.

I understand though, as well, that excessive caffeine intake can negatively impact some of our body systems and our health.

thats okay just remember anybody with a computer can post info in wiki sites and what you find may or may not be upto date and true. you should have see how screwed up there Atkins info was this summer.

what you are describing is called the European Prep method so check your cans or coffee store and see what they say your bean prep was.
with any method used the FDA very tightly regulates how much of that methylene chloride can remain behind and coffee companies are well below the 10 ppm allowed because coffee is roasted afterwards at 400F and the stuff vaporizes at about 104F

Did half coffee/half decaf this morning. Hope I can keep this up! Does taste a bit different though.

Anyone seen those new Splenda coffee flavor packets? I got some in Mocha, but there are other flavors...I think each packet is about 1 carb. It's yummy!

I picked up a bag of the decaf Komodo Dragon blend at lunch

They also had a promotion at Starbucks where you got a free cup of the coffee of the day, so I got the decaf Sumatra. It was ok, I guess. It did taste different than regular though.

Boy does that decaf Komodo Dragon smell good in the bag! Never had this blend before, so it will be something to look forward to tomorrow! I'm so glad you posted that link!

Absolute proof that the Swiss decaf method rocks! It tastes great, and I love the bold flavor. I can always tell the difference between regular and decaf..this one tastes like regular!

                              Re: Coffee...please help

Can I take this in a different, but related, direction?

I am finishing day one of Induction. Have finally got up the guts to swear off coffee (which is actually harder for me than swearing off chocolate). I'm not sure if the caffeine ever affected me, though I think it's possible it makes me feel hungry when I'm not. The real issue for me is how much stuff I used to put in the coffee: into a 24-oz jug went a metric ton of half & half and ten artificial sweeteners (five pink, five blue - yes, I really do like it that sweet). I wanted to see if those were causing me not to lose weight as easily as I used to.

I can't stand black coffee or coffee sweetened with Splenda, so the only option was to cut the stuff entirely. To be honest, I am really feeling the loss. I love the ritual, the smell, the comfort of getting through a hellish morning commute with the thought that I could brew myself some fresh coffee when I got to work. I'd kill for a substitute, but decaf tea with cream and a couple of Splendas is cold comfort.

I was just wondering if anyone else had to cauterize their addiction like this, and if so, how you got through it.
