  • My unusual co-worker

I have a co-worker who often has her lunch in the staff room at the same time that I do. For years, now, she's had virtually the same lunch every day. She has a Diet Coke, one Atkins shake, a small carton of low-carb yogurt, and two pieces of string cheese. On a very rare occasion, she will add just a few Wheat Thins (for the non-Americans, those are small wheat crackers ) to the mix.

Now, what's unusual about Barb is that she's rail thin, and always has been. I have never, ever, seen her partake when sweet treats are being offered in the office. She keeps a big bowl of peanut M&Ms on her desk, for visitors, but, again, I've never seen her sample even a single one.

Last week she returned from a business trip, and left a few packs of beef jerky on my desk, with a note that they were from her. When I next saw her, I asked her why. She said that she had noticed that I ate only low carb foods, and that she had a number of these left over from her trip -- where she would use them on planes -- and thought I might like them.

So, I said to her, "Barb, anyone who looks at me can tell why I'm on a low-carb diet, but I've wondered for ages why you seem to be." Her response was that she had learned that she felt better and had far more energy when she elimitated sugar and refined carbs from her diet.

    How about that!
    -Chris

An educated co-worker, she should be framed and exhibited. So rare!

    Thanks for sharing that Chris.

i just like eating low carb because it's easy for me to follow. sure i can partake in the sweets and junk food with co-workers but i choose not to most of the time. we have so much junk food at work it's not funny but for the record the 4 guys(including me) working in Medical and 1 female are all within military height and weight standards. we workout on a daily basis so it's a win/win situation.

She's absolutely delightful -- but then I'm extremely fortunate in that I can say that about quite a few of the folks with whom I work.

Hey Chris, oh I mean, CL, chopped Liver! I came over to your digs here to check it out. I loved the story. Those thin people seem to make all the right choices. I live with one, my husb...is thin, eats carefully, it's second nature...I eats with "feelings in mind" much like the thin co worker..
I am working on that intuitiveness too. I like how I never feel stuffed any more. I am learning what hunger really feels like and also I am really concentrating on "satisfied" and where that is??? so when I feel it, I can easily push the plate away, knowing as soon as I do, it really makes a difference! My stomach is grumbling now. I have been up 2.5 hours and it's time to eat, I know that based on the grumbling, not the MUMBLINGS...(oh I think I will post on that, off the STAC)

You know, Jess, I remember reading a study, quite a few years ago, that showed that many of us overweight people don't have very clear ideas of when they're hungry, and, more importantly, of when they've eaten enough. So, we just keep eating! It seems that some of us have that "thifty gene" that makes us want to eat whenever food is available, whether or not our bodies are in need of nourishment at the time. Now, this was great for our caveman ancestors who often didn't know when food would, or would not, be available; but is pretty bad for us, today, when we're surrounded by an overabundance of food.

I don't know if it's possible for us to learn, for a lifetime, to emulate those without that thrifty gene, but I keep telling myself that it is!

Interesting points....I am not so into genes as I am (and this is for me personally)for holding myself accountable and working with myself to establish new mindsets and habits. I guess I beleive in that enough to work on routines and habits for almost 3 months now...My gene pool doesn't give me alot of hope! My Dad was very overweight and lived a unmotivated life, they say WWII did that too him, but it's my natural tendancy to veg on a couch...my gene pool, could PULL but I want free of it, by taking responsibility to over come it...Aint nobody gonna stop and babysit this girl here...
p.s. I did not grow up with my Father, my parents divorced with i was an infant and yet I am very very much like him and it has freaked my mom out all these years...genepool ripples...
I am working my way out of the pool!!!!!
