    Re: My unusual co-worker

I was going to say, "I wonder if Betty has folks approach her with the same question?" I see Betty has been here. I know Betty lost weight on Atkins but it's been several years, so some folks may not know that.

This goes to show that Atkins isn't just for people who are overweight.

I think what I find so unusual about Barb, G-Mom, is not that she watches her diet so carefully, but that she uses a VERY obvious low-carb diet as a matter of course. There are many folks around us who've never been overweight, but pay careful attention to what they eat (I guess that's why they've stayed so thin, huh?); but very few of them would utilize low-carb in doing so. Most, I think, would watch calories and fat intake. Barb has learned, through trial and error, that limiting refined carbs and eliminating sugar, leaves her feeling better and more energetic.

Now although Barb's every day use of Atkins shakes and low-carb yogurt are not what we'd recommend, here, it obviously works well for her; and, I'd never consider suggesting that she do otherwise. She is an extremely hard working and busy woman, often putting in many extra hours in the office each week -- and weekend. She's also a wife and the mother of a teenage son, and takes both positions very seriously. I suspect that her choices for lunch are made on the basis of being low-carb, but also easy to pick up and throw in her lunch bag.

Many feel low-carb eating and candy avoidance is only for those in the process of losing weight - but it's rather effective for maintenance, too! Possibly she's maintaining?

G-mom, I thought the same thing re: Betty. I'm sure people who didn't know her "before" would think she's just naturally thin and be surprised at how she eats....

Jess, I just clicked over and was snopping around your blog for the first time. I didn't see a place where I could comment there, so I'll leave a comment here -- it's fantasic! I love your writing style. And I wish Caitlin much success with the lock-in. Looking forward to hearing how it goes...

Actually, we recommend that these products are only used by those on maintenance, or pre-maintenance. The yogurt can be used on dairy rung. They are just a no-no for ppl on Induction or not at the proper level of the plan.

She does sound like she has her stuff together! It's nice to hear that there are people who've maintained their weight losses or have cut out those refined foods and sugars for the betterment of their health!

Plus, Chris is just a good example to everyone he meets, save for me. And the time we got arrested. Well, I got arrested.

              But nevermind.

Ok, off topic -- just a little. Until I moved to Arlington, about a year ago, I had lived in DC for over twenty years. During one of my two stints with Weight Watchers I made it all the way to goal, and was doing my six weeks of maintenance so that I could get my lifetime membership award. My goal had been 133, and, I think, at the time I'm going to tell you about, I weighed just a little under that.

So, one evening, I was walking from my apartment to my WW meeting a few blocks away. As I was walking down K street, just after crossing 14th, a prostitute came up to me and said, "Can I go with you, baby?" I replied, "Only if you want to go to a Weight Watchers meeting," and continued walking. The next thing I knew, she had come up behind me, put her hands on my arm and pulled me to a stop. She said, "What kind of crap is this? Why would a little tiny thing like you be going to Weight Watchers?!" I think she was actually annoyed because she thought I had lied to her (heavens, we should never lie to prostitutes, you know!), Anyway, I explained to her that the reason I went was because I used to weigh 60 pounds more, and that I had lost it while on the program, and was now continuing on the maintenance program. After that, she seemed genuinely interested and actually congratulated me on my loss.

Oh, as far as Cleo's arrest, don't worry. I got her bailed out within just a few hours! She really wasn't in "the big house" long enough to learn any new vices (well, not too many, anyway).

Hmmm... I thought you were supposed to have no energy following Atkins and drop dead within months. LOL

How cool to work with someone who can see the healthy effects of low carb eating.
