  • Gutted in Lancashire

    Hi all,

We are Emily (23 F) and Sam (25 M) and have both just joined the board and 5 days into induction. We have followed every rule going and been very strict with ourselves (even when Sam had to nip into hospital for a quick Op - He didn't have a celebration drink that evening when he got the All Clear from the big C) and everything started peachy in the garden. We know that you shouldn't weigh yourself in the 1st 2 weeks but Sam likes Excel and wanted to do a daily graph - here are the results so far:

    Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4Day 5Emily (5ft 5)62.662.46262.262.6Sam(6ft 4)104.6104103.4103.6103.6

So after such an encouraging early start which made it so much easier foregoing the usual few drinks in an evening plus the sugar cravings, to have everything go back to normal makes us both think that we could be having some drink in moderation (going to the gym more) and not have to cut out so much (Well the drink anyway) and we would be better off. It just seems we are giving up a lot for no gain - I have read quite a bit already and know that patience is a virtue but we were hoping that atkins was the answer for fast results ans Em's preferred weight is 55kg (a size 6-8 UK) and Sam's is 95kg.

Please can someone spur us on - Having spent a fortune on food and the books - we really don't want to quit, but having faith that it will all turn around is fairly difficult.

firdst ther alcohol is slowing you down cause the body burns the alcohol for fuel first.

not sure why you spent a fortune on the fod since Atkins is all natural foods just low glycemic veggiesfrom the lists, meats, eggs, natural fat, water and 4 ounces of cheese with any spice and herbs you want but keep working your foods exercising daily as that is a rquirement of Atkins drinking the water ans you will see yourelves shrinking on day 15 and posting yippeeee I lost ________ pounds and _________ inches

You read me wrong Sir, we have not touched ANY alcohol (that was a point I was trying to make - I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear) and the fortune was spent on emptying all that twas within the fridge and replacing it with LOTS of food from the lists (it look like I have an ex-farm in my fridge!!)

              Hi Em and Sam
Welcome to our international ADBB family

It looks as if you are off to a good start already - well done for getting 'the book' and reading the manual

I would suggest following the plan and staying clear of the booze till you have reached the level/rung in the second phase of Atkins (Ongoing weight loss/aka OWL) before seeing how alcohol affects you.

This will give your bodies the best chance at optimising your weightlosses - as alcohol will be utilised as fuel in preference to anything else you eat and delay potential weightloss, which could make you experience a dispiriting stall.

Good for you for exercising this early in your Atkins journey too - you will probably find that it will mean you will find you have a higher CCLL if you continue to go to the gym too!!

And congratulations to Sam for getting the allclear too - that must have meant a great relief you both

                Re: Gutted in Lancashire

Oh, please don't be too discouraged. You are very early in yet, and really it may take a while for your body to adjust, for ketosis to set in, for the fat to start coming off. I'd say the best thing you can do is keep following the rules exactly as you have been. Drink more! I think 2 Liters a day is the minimum recommended amount, and most people try to drink more than that. And how much are you exercising? Dr. Atkins says that exercise is non-negotiable, so you should be exercising several days a week.

Maybe you should wait until the end of induction to weigh yourself again. Daily weighing can be nothing be discouraging.

Honestly, I can't see a single reason you two won't succeed, so just keep at it. You're bound to see results!

                Good luck!

Hi Emily and Sam! Welcome to the vast and wonderful wilderness that is ADBB!

First of all, do the full 14 day Induction. Weigh and measure on the first day and then DON'T weigh or measure until Day 14.

Second, drink, drink, drink . . . your water!!! Please! It really helps.

Third, be patient with yourselves. You are lovely people on a motivated journey.

Fourth, exercise! This is mandatory, even if it starts out as a walk around the block. Just move around, dance, clean house, go up and down the stairs a couple of times. Anything, just move your tushies!

Fifth, CONGRATULATION, Sam, on the good report from your venture to the hospital. That is the best kind of news!

Carry on, brave soldiers. I know you can do this! We are all here to support you.

Hi all and thanks for the support - It really is nice to come on here and read such encoraging posts in reply. Last night when we put that on we were havings BIG doubts but luckily instead of opening a bottle of wine (or three) we had some cheese and water!

We are from not so sunny England and thanks StaziaW for the message re op results.

Wish us luck as this is the first weekend fully on Atkins and Friday night was always curry and out around town night - Just wishing I never put on that 20-25 lbs in the first place now!!

                    Thanks again

                      Re: Gutted in Lancashire

Well to be honest, you dont have much weight to lose in the first place! So you're well on track I think. Em, you for example, only want to lose 7kg, which is about *works it out* 15lbs. Seeing as you only weigh 136 or so to start with, you don't have much to lose. Even if you lost 15% of your desired weight loss in induction, you'd only be aiming to lose 2.25lbs! You won't necissarily see the results that quickly in your case. People who DO see fast weight loss have MUCH more to lose in the first place! I lost about 20lbs in the 2 weeks (9kg I think) but I had more to lose than you (50lbs/23kg)

Men will lose weight faster than women until the end of time, so don't be discouraged if you're not losing at the same rate. He also has more weight to lose than you do. And don't forget to take into account that time of the month. That can make a woman's weight fluctate by an absurd amount (About 7lbs/3kg for me!)

And finally, make sure you're weighing yourself consistently. The best time I found is first thing in the morning. Pay a visit to the bathroom, then weigh yourself before you eat or get dressed. Dont weigh at different times of the day because again, your weight can fluctuate by up to 10lbs in one day with food and drink taken into account.
