  • Atkins "too expensive"?

I'm wondering what you guys and gals retalliate with when someone says "Yeah, but isn't Atkins expensive?" It's come up here, and I was just wondering if anyone had any funny or sassy comebacks...

    Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

I never found Atkins too expensive, but then I'm a real penny pincher and I look around for bargains and sales. I was reading a blog about fast food and a poster said that a 99 cent burrito at Taco Bell was less expensive than making it at home. Another person replied with a breakdown of the ingredients and their cost. It turns out at home you could make that burrito for 87 cents.

I guess if you want a snappy comeback, you could always say 69 cents a pound for chicken legs is alot cheaper than $400 per month for diabetes drugs or something like that. Or you could just say I don't put a price on my health.

Our freezer is actually full of meat right now because hunting season is over. 69 cent per pound chicken legs? Wow. I'm coming to live with you! I'm a penny pincher too, so we do all homemade here, too. I'm gonna have to start watching the meat sales a little better though. Typically, when our freezer is out of venison/etc., we just didn't buy meat and waited for the next hunting season.

Yeah, I've heard that before. I typically respond with "Junk food is always cheap. That's why its junk."

                    Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

I echo what a lot of the others have said and want to add that for me, as I climbed the rungs, my diet got less expensive. My meat portions and dairy portion shrunk a bit, and I have filled up on a lot of cheaper fare like cabbage, peaches, and sweet potatoes. Many veggies have always been very cheap.

Also, I find that now that I've lost over 60 pounds, it takes much smaller portions to feed my hunger, which tends to save a lot on the grocery bill! Between DH and I, we both eat about half of what we used to and can stretch our food further.

                    Something to think about.
No stats. Not weighing anymore ever. Will post "before and after" pictures when I want to. The end.

                      Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

Personally, I've never found Atkins to be an expensive weight loss plan. You don't have to pay a monthly fee, you don't have to pay a trainer or gym pass (unless you want to), you don't spend money on junk foods. Instead I find that eating healthy inexpensive foods such as chicken, tuna and veggies fullfills me longer and makes me feel better. I was spending the same on clothing as I kept getting bigger and outgrowing the clothes I had, so that has stayed about the same. I do spend a bit more on hair-styles and makeup than I did before, cause I feel better about myself and want to look my best. To me, saying its too expensive, too time-consuming or too hard is just a cop-out for not wanting to do it.

Oh I agree, I'm just gearing up for the "comments" that will be made by relatives at our Thanksgiving festivities. And I'm a bit of a sass...ok, I'm a LOT of a sass, so I gotta come up with those comebacks so I'm prepared.

                          Hi Chasin

My answer would be "**** yes! But i'm worth the best!"

I don't actually find that Atkins is more expensive in any way, but it should shut them up!

I've had this rubbish said to me, too. My answer to the lady was: "how much do you currently spend on alcohol, cakes, bread, crisps, chocolate, rice, pasta, processed junk food, chilled meals, cola, fruit juice, coffee, milk ....... ?

Processed veggies cost a LOT more than fresh (I've seen chilled-meal cauliflower cheese for example costing 5 times that of the fresh variety)

Furthermore, reduced appetite means you eat less overall.

I used to spent £1 a day on chocolate alone. Now I spend 68p a day on gym/pool membership instead.

Well, i use to buy pizza delivery a good 4 times a week PLUS food at the grocery store, and at least 10 bucks i drank in pop. So cut out the 100 a week in pizza i use to buy and atkins is a breeze, and now all i drink is water. Food now is all expensive, however, my mom and brother have to take cholesteral and bp medicine and my dad is on diabetic pills and that is a whole heck of a lot more expensive, especially if the insurance company's may be able to start charging people based on their weight because excess weight can cause health problems.

Snappy comeback? Nope, i just let my success speak for me. Part of doing atkins to me is learning to disregard the sabotaging statements such as its bad for you or its too expensive. If they choose to use that excuse, then that tells me they are not ready for the atkins way and i wish them well on their chosen way of eating.
