    Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

Too expensive? Yeah right!!! Just like everyone else has said...if you add up how much you spend on junk food and buying new clothes because you are getting bigger and outgrowing the ones you already have, and possibly medicine in the future because of a weight related problem...compared to buying meats, a gym membership, and some new clothes because you have gotten into better shape and need clothes that fit better....that is a no brainer!!! I also agree with what dream said, people say these things because they are not disciplined enough to shut up and just do it like nike!

      Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

I'm not going to say it's cheap to do Atkins, but I look at the benefits:

      1. I stopped taking medications associated with obesity, saving me well over $100 a month

      2. I stopped seeing the doctor every two weeks

      3. My clothes require less fabric, so cost less

      4. We ate out less, which saved us even more money.

Here's my rant about government subsidies, cost of quality food and food marketing.

As a family of four in college, we didn't have much left after bills to buy food back in the day. We ate a lot of top ramen, processed foods, cheap meat, cheap milk, WIC subsidies. None of these things helped us prepare the quality foods. Junk food is cheap, but because it is processed, it takes more to feed a family using hamburger helper, macaroni and cheese, and frozen pizzas.

My major disappointment is that a head of lettuce costs more than a cheap frozen pizza, and Americans choose the pizza because the lettuce is just too expensive a choice. The poor cannot afford beef not injected with hormones and antibiotics, nor can they afford hormone-free milk.

In short, the poor in this country don't have the same opportunities as we do in the middle class, and it's a sad shame that the grain industry coupled with companies like Kellogg dictate food stamp use and the use of commodities be for unhealthy foods and not for truly educating and helping people for the better.

        Touché, Cleo!!!

You get a rep for putting a huge part of the cause of obesity in plain view. Even 100 years ago people suffering from severe malnutrition due to poverty were grossly overweight because they could afford to eat an unlimited amount of starch (even laundry starch) to satisfy their well-founded cravings for nutritious sustenance.

It's a shame that companies have found that they can double their profits from a food crop by taking out everything of value, selling that in the form of dietary supplements and industrial products, then packaging the leftovers in a way that appeals to consumers at a lower price than any quality alternative.

Edit- can't rep you yet - gotta spread some around first.

          Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

I think Megs gave the perfect answer.............

I guess if you want a snappy comeback, you could always say 69 cents a pound for chicken legs is alot cheaper than $400 per month for diabetes drugs or something like that. Or you could just say I don't put a price on my health.
And without health insurance the price of diabetes is much much higher. Then add in the price of "other" things linked to obesity.... Things that can be helped or avoided by eating right and working out.
          high blood pressure
          high Cholesterol
          heart disease
          cancer
          depression
          chronic fatigue
          etc etc etc.

I always wondered what a pound of donuts cost?

          Atkins...........priceless.

            Re: Atkins "too expensive"?

I always tell people that it is more expensive, but you can't put a price on your health. I'd say we get off pretty cheap for all the benefits we get from eating this way. The most money is gone to the smaller clothes I've had to buy over the last two years!

Cleochatra, I think you hit the nail on the head. Growing up, we didn't have a lot of money, were on WIC, half the time I don't think my parents knew how we were going to eat. So yeah, if you have 99 cents, what are you going to buy? Four boxes of macaroni and cheese, or one head of lettuce? Its something that's always bugged me, and there are people in my family who still don't see anything wrong with that being the way things are priced.

                Good point!!

Amen! And the fact that the Makah nation is no longer allowed to catch a whale a year (they use the entire whale, food and all), coupled with the cheapo products like you mentioned which are easier to afford than fresh produce on government funds, are a major cause behind a lot of diabetes that is currently plaguing that community.

It saddens me to see an entire nation of Native Americans slowly dying, and a culture along with it.
