  • Mean When Dieting?

My allergist put me on a Candida Yeast Free diet once. It's like Atkins in the fact you get rid of all the sugary stuff, fruits, yeast, breads, pastas, all that. And that was before I ever was married.

Well, while we were dating I decided to get back on it since I'd felt so good then while on the diet. Well, two days into it my husband proclaims, "She's mean when she's on THAT diet" lol He insisted I go off of it.

Hmm...I should have stayed on. He's the kind that needed it. Long story there.

you had your body going thoough a lot of stuff you were like any addict jonesing for as fix so you got physical symptoms too. You also had yeast die off going on and that can be nasty with akll the histamines being released somw folk end up in the hspital on Ivs and pain meds for that.

you know it only lasts 3-4 days so tell him about it before you start as when folk know a change is going to happen and their comfort zone and defined role will change they are much more receptive to the changes. Then do a Dr Phil on him and ask him of rhis help in doing it. ask him to be strong for you when you might be weak and keep the bad for you foods away from you and to be your biggest cheerleader rooting you on.

He's since passed, so I'm the only one who could complain. LOL.
But, I've known a few who get that complaint.
Also, remember, that carbs and sugar help produce seratonin, so I'm guessing that's what I was lacking in.

I never could stand Dr. Phil. lol

As for my late husband, heck..he'd have never cheered me on in anything. Again, LONG story there.

First and foremost, sorry about the loss of your husband.

Second, we would LOVE to be your cheerleaders! I also have a yeast issue and did the KISS version of Atkins (same thing you did). I am currently shifting from KISS to extended induction to see how my body does with certain foods now. I also had an issue with being meanish when I went on this KISS version. It lasted for about 4-5 days. Then, I was fine. It has to do with breaking your addiction. It's just like detoxing your body.

Once I was thru those first few days, I was fine. Just let me remind you, if you happen to fall of the wagon, you have to go thru that withdrawal period again. Remember how your body feels during those first few days so you can MOTIVATE yourself to stay on track. That is my BIGGEST motivator. I never want to go thru that 4-5 day beginning again. That was the worst for me. I had a heck of an induction flu when starting.

We're here to be your cheerleaders!!!

atually carbs and sugar are NOT the building blocks of serotonin that is a misconseption. tryptophan an amino acid is the building block. anything that provokes an insulin response be it large amount of sugar from carbs or proteins will add in removing from the blood stream all the competing amino acids ofr the binding sites for the tryptophan so more can be gotten to get more but unless you got the tryptophan amino acid one can eat carbs till they wiegh 500 pounds and not get any serotonin made

I didn't say you had to like Dr Phil just use his technique of telling them what you need from them. I don't like him either but that thecnique works.

I'm mean all the time. I think I'm meaner whenever I'm eating carbs and feel worse about myself, then I take it out on others...

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that doesn't like him.
It's just the way he belittles people at times and slightly male chauvinistic. I can't stand to be in the same room with him, even if it is only on TV.

Thanks for the info. I've always heard that it's the carbs and sugars that help with the seratonin, hense the "mean" phase. I'll have to go back and relook things up.

                LOL.
Nawww, Me...I'm nicer on carbs. (or so I've been told)
And the meaness, when I low carb, stays around. It's not just for induction, it's the whole danged time I'm on it. I'm literally more aggressive when I eat a lot of meat, especially red meat. But, then I used to live on nothing but carbs, hated meat. When on Atkin's I eat more protein than I ever have. I was never much of a meat eater.
                Go figure.
But then I'm put together wierd anyways.

My mom (vegetarian) used to say that meat makes people more aggressive. Especially red meat. I don't exactly know why - I think the one theory was that it was the way the animals were killed - being terrified before brutally murdered... but I'm not sure.

I'm kind of the opposite since no carbs
I don't feel those I need a sugar hit, grumpies anymore, I feel a lot calmer.

which is a shame come to think of it, now I only have TOM to annoy DH with lol

                      Lyssie,

                      I've actually heard that before.
I've a friend that is a treasure trove of information. lol. I swear, all that gal did must have been studying. She's now 65. She once told me that some of the most aggressive tribes were the ones that ate mostly red meat. We'd been talking about the diet and how it made me rather more grumpier than usual.
It could very well be the red meat.

gotta love the strong cavemen lol

Seriously though, I only eat red meat like 3 times a week. I try and have lots of fish & chicken & eggs are in there too. Tofu is allowed. Different protein sources might help you feel better.

your meanness is most likely a function of your eating. a symptom of hunger is being grouchy

Actually, that's not it. When I do Atkins I'm not hungry. In fact I literally have to force myself to eat. But it's a valid thought though. I don't know which is worse, having to force myself to eat or the hunger you go through with other diets.

the lack of "hunger" is a two edges sword our appetite is suppressed but he body still sends physical symptoms of hunger to us. irritability and easily aggitated are physical signs of hunger too so your meanness could easily have been your body asking for fuel.
