  • Seen on EXTRA!(EXTRA!)- Soy Noodles

Forgive me if someone already posted this today.....I looked around a bit and did not find it, but I find it odd that I would be the only one to post about this...

The other day, a member posted about these noodles and wanted to know if they were atkins friendly........
Then today, I was watching EXTRA on tv and they showed those soy noodles (shitaki or ...something). They can be ordered online, but I was wondering an easier way....Does anyone know where you can buy them? I am on the west coast. I am going to check TRADER JOES tomorrow and a few other places. Any suggestions. If this noodle is all its cracked up to be, I will be one happy camper!

TJs, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, any lowcarb grocery store, and my local (IL) health food store. They arent too difficult to find if you have a TJs or a Whole Foods.

I should also mention, these have a weird odor. If I remember correctly, you need to rinse them, a lot, and then boil them in salted water, and then rinse them again to get rid of the funky smell. My husband really likes them. You have to really put something in them to flavor them because the taste of the noodle alone isn't anything to go crazy over. After I rinse and boil and rinse, I throw them in a sautee pan with butter, garlic, ginger, and tamari.

they are near the tofu usually in the refrigerated section ....the plain ones snap crackle and pop when you rinse them

I saute garlic in oil add some green oinions, chile and ginger then toss the rinsed noodles in (I dont boil them) then when they are done I toss in toasted sesame seeds and a dash of sesame oil ...with one shot of soy sauce ...now this is good!!!

they are also good tossed with sesame oil and kimchee

Re: Seen on EXTRA!(EXTRA!)- Soy Noodles

Shiritake noodles are not soy noodles. Shiritake noodles are made from a root vegetable called yam bean or konjac. Soy noodles are made from soy flour and would be appropriate during On-Going Weight loss phase.

                Editing to add...

I have seen shiritake noodles made from a combination of tofu and konjac. But the majority of shiritake noodles are the clear kind that resembles 'cellophane noodles'.

Does that mean we can pour mock milk over them and pretend they are Rice Krispies?

There is a Whole Foods here but a pretty far from my house. I will try the tofu/vegetarian section of my grocery store first. Then I guess I will try the link that EXTRA had on their website to order them online.

                  Thanks Guys!!

I'm not sure but I heard somewhere that they can stall you a bit, so I would proceed with caution. I haven't read the full nutitional value of them though.
                      Maybe someone here has....

I have never seen any shirataki that are clear. Are there any dried noodle or product made from konjac? I have only seen fresh noodle made from tofu & konjac, and it is pricey.

We can only get the 'clear' ones here in UK, as it seems no-one sells the soy-added ones, only the konnyaku ones.

                          The packet looks like this

And out of the packet like this

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks, Ellizellen. They still look sort of white - I'd seen some really clear "cellophane like" noodles and sheets in the oriental stores, but they are apparently a carby rice product.

It would have been nice to see a dry Konjac product that would keep unrefrigerated.
