  • Let's talk about eating after 7 p.m./Do you?

Just curious how many ADBB'ers follow the rule in the "outside Atkins" diet world that says that one should not eat after 7 p.m. (At least I don't think I ever read this rule in DANDR. Better go back and check....or someone correct me if I'm wrong.) Anyhow, I have read that one should not eat after 6 ot 7 p.m. and that this habit alone will make weight loss imminent. Do you believe this? Any experiences with this theory? Or do you eat every few hours as you are hungry, regardless of the time of day? Please post and let me know. I am curious about this. I personally have always eaten no matter what time of day, just to prevent hunger, which keeps my blood sugar stable. (Not diabetic...just want to avoid cravings/binges!) Talk to me!

Good question! I'm curious to hear the answers too.
To answer your question, it's 2am and I'm snacking on cheese. lol I usually wake up later in the day (11am or so) and stay up later at night (2-3am) though so my eating schedule is weird. Even when I was on a more "normal" schedule I didn't worry about what time I ate. If I am hungry I eat. I've never noticed any bad reactions, but then again I've never tried NOT to eat late so I can't say if there's a difference.

Wow. This is a hard one. I remember somewhere (I think maybe it was Oprah, when she lost all her weight - this last time) said that she never eats after 7 - 8 at night. I hope this isn't a rule....because I haven't ever followed it! LOL.

I'm a musician, and I can't eat before or during the time I play....I know, it's kind of weird, but I don't like that 'heavy' feeling while performing, and it kind of zaps my energy. So I keep kind of late hours. I've learned to ignore the wonderful aroma's in the restuarants that I play at, but sometimes you just get hungry. If I've had a really really good show, and my adrenaline is pumping...sometimes I eat snack, or a mini meal prior to going to bed or I'll never get to sleep because of the 'excitement factor'....

Then again, that's just me, even if I'm home vegg'n out with the family, I try not to eat late, but I've never made it a 'rule'. I think years ago when I was doing a low-fat diet (yuckkkkk!) I didn't eat after a certain hour.

If I eat less then 2 hours before bed I wake up hungry, makes no sense but its true. I would like it to be my rule because as I snack i n the evening I make bad choices. My problem comes in when I work till 9:30 and come home needing dinner but need to be in bed early for an early am start

It seems to me when the body has no food in it, then it must burn fat when you are on Atkins, to me it only makes sense not to eat after 7, I stopped eating after 7 and dropped almost 3 lbs in 2 days. That's how it works in my head anyway.

I agree with CoachW44, it seemed to help me to stop eating after 7:00pm. And I noticed when I broke that rule, I was up a lb the next morning, no doubt because my body processed my late night snack and stuck it in my liver for later use since it didn't need it while I was sleeping. Just my thought, I could be wrong.

Re: Let's talk about eating after 7 p.m./Do you?

I've never followed any rules except "If you're hungry, eat!".

If I never ate after 7pm, I'd never eat dinner. I leave for work at 6:30am, and don't get home until 7pm. So, my bf and I are usually eating dinner around 7 or 8. Sometimes we'll have an "early" dinner and eat in the 6 o'clock hour. I haven't noticed any problems, and it's never caused me to stop losing weight. I don't eat a very heavy breakfast or lunch and I think this helps, as I'm probably still burning off my previous night's dinner.

The only thing that prevents me from eating at night is if I'm going to bed within the hour...then I usually don't eat anything because it's a gross feeling to lay in bed with a stomach full of food.

This is a pretty interesting subject. I dont get out of work until 9:30PM and Im always wanting something before I go to bed. I try to make it a small snack like some cheese slices and celery sticks and Im usually pretty good at sticking with that except with TOM, then it gets a little more difficult.

Supper is about 6:30-7:00 PM for me. But I don't do "bed-time" snacks because if I eat anything within a few hours of bedtime, I'm up all night with indigestion. That's the way it's always been with me.

Re: Let's talk about eating after 7 p.m./Do you?

I never have been in the habit of eating after 7...my hunger occurs earlier in the day and by evening I am satisfied. I have always been an afternoon snacker rather than an evening snacker. So my weight gains have all occurred before 7 pm. There is nothing magical about 7 pm. In my opinion, the problem is WHAT you eat when you're hungry, not really WHEN you eat it. You can make poor choices just as easily at 3pm as you can at 8pm. So on this WOE, the challenge is to have good healthy snacks ready to go so you don't make poor choices when you're tempted by hunger. And that's true no matter what time of day it is.

I don't believe there's any truth to the stop eating before 7 rule, aside from indigestion as Megs mentioned, I don't stop at any certain time. If' i'm hungry i'll eat..though i'm careful what i eat so i don't get heartburn. Your body doesn't know what time it is..and it does keep digesting while you sleep.

As attek says, it's not when you eat it..it's what you eat. I think the problem with evening eating is alot of times it's not because of hunger, but out of boredom. it goes with the whole 'eat when you are hungry' rule.

Seems like I've heard we should not eat within 2 hours of going to bed. I try to follow that and just not eat a lot after 8:00 - stick with something lighter when I really have a hunger attack.
