    Re: This diet is disgusting!!

In response to "Skinny Mom" at what point did I bash another member as you put it - was it when "Misplaced Southerner" accused me of not reading the book!!
In response to "Phobe" - No No No I wouldn't dream of touching pork scratchings LOL!! but it just goes to show how desperate you become on Induction. In fact when you read through all the messages from all the newbies on this site it really makes you wonder whether Dr Atkins could have made Induction a bit more user friendly so to speak in order to have fewer failures and more successes to enjoy the good foods later.

I understand Julianne123 that when you become more advanced on this diet you can become more leniant with the foods you have but it blatently says on Induction in the book (WHICH I HAVE READ!!!) that if you try and do a low fat version it might not work - which is why I fried everything. And then you all scoff at me saying "well I don't fry anything". And as for your comment on why am I still hanging around this bulletin board - at what point do you qualify in become a "supporting Member" LOL - thats not very supporting is it now!!
Thanks to those that would welcome me back if I did decide to change my mind again and apologies for perhaps naming the thread the way I did

    Good luck

      Re: This diet is disgusting!!

      Just a few points:

      1) As others have said, this is not a quick fix diet; it is a way of eating for life. If you would have lost the weight fast like you wanted to and gone back to what you used to eat without going through the rungs, guess what would have happened? All of your weight lost put right back on.

      2) I find it extremely hard to believe that you read the entire book by the kinds of foods you said you ate while on it. I never fry anything and only eat meat once a day.

      3) My doctor loves the Atkins way of life and puts many of his patients on it with great success.

      4) This WOE is definitely not for everyone. I am of the opinion that just about any diet will work if you stick with it consistently. It is just a matter of finding the one you can live with.

      5) I repectfully ask that you refrain from bashing this WOE on at Atkins support board. It is perfectly fine to vent and ask for help, but it is another thing to be mean-spirited and knock what you clearly do not understand.

      6) I sincerely wish you the best in your weight loss efforts and your upcoming wedding.

        Re: This diet is disgusting!!

Hi Jo, sorry to hear that you have not enjoyed this woe. For me, I can only reiterate what everyone else has said - I rarely fry anything. I eat lovely dark green vegetables and beautiful rocket salads every day. I stick mostly to eating chicken and fish with the occasional steak. I'm eating more dairy than I ever did before, which is fantastic for my calcium intakes. My omega 3 intake is great too, thanks to flax meal.

But apart from my diet, which is healthier than its ever been on any other diet (and let me tell you, I've done them all!), I've never felt healthier. The biggest thing for me is the fact that all my joint pain went within 3 days of starting induction. I firmly believe that sugar and flour really does not suit my body and causes me to have some serious health issues aside from being overweight.

I think we all were a bit surprised by the title on your thread. You have to understand that everyone on this board supports this diet and each other, it stung a bit to have you call our chosen woe 'disgusting.'

I do know that sometimes we all have a bad day. I'm sorry you had one. I wish you all the best for your wedding and I'm sure you'll look lovely no matter what.

          Re: This diet is disgusting!!

You bashed MS by saying that she had a problem controlling her weight. That's pretty rude, a lot more so than saying someone hasn't read something And ironic considering you are dieting as well. Whether someone has 10 lbs or 100 lbs to lose, either way you are having issues controlling your eating.

This board is very supportive and full of kind, informative, gentle people who geniunely want to help each other. Telling someone they can't control themselves (especially Misplaced Southerner who has been ROCKIN' Atkins thankyouverymuch) isn't a kind or supportive thing to do.

I had 2 hardboiled eggs for breakfast, a grilled chicken salad for lunch, and plan to have grilled fish and broccoli for dinner. Just like anything in life…this diet is all about your choices. I eat healthier on this diet than I do off of it cause I eat so many different veggies. Not to mention the fact that induction only last two weeks then you gradually add the fruit and dairy back in.

                Dear Jo Chard,

Why are you here? You have expressed your opinion, thank you, it was noted... our experiences are different.

I'll tell you why I am here. Since I have been 14 years old it has always been next to impossible for me to lose weight. I am not very over weight, less than 30 pounds on a 5 foot 5 inch frame, but nevertheless, I cannot lose weight on other diets. I tried out this way of eating and it works for me. I am into extreme sports and I am 50ish so I guess I could be considered healthy.

From your post it doesn't appear to me that you are ready to accept this diet, you don't have to, that is your personal decision, I hope you find something that works for you... all I am saying is that this works for me.

                    Re: This diet is disgusting!!

I guess I am having a hard time understanding why not doing something lowfat means you have to fry everything. Not making it lowfat means don't use reduced-fat products, like lowfat salad dressings, lowfat cheese, etc.

I am guessing that you just don't know any better when you defend the posts you have made so far. I don't mean that in a disrespectful way, believe me. I just sense a lack of maturity.

If we distress you so much, why do you hang around?

                      Re: This diet is disgusting!!

                      Hi Jo,

First, what you are feeling today, dizzy, et. al. is totally normal. It is your body detoxing from carbs. We not so affectionately call it the induction flu. The worse you have it the more addicted you are. I sounds to me that you have made some poor food choices in your first four days. (i.e. not everything needs to be fried).

Constipation is to be expected initially as you body retrains itself, so much so that the good doctor specifically addressed it in the book and offered several bits of advice to combat it. My simple advice is cut back a bit on your proteins and add another small salad (worked for me).

To address something you brought up in another thread regarding sweeteners. A bit of a history lesson: artificial sweeteners were originally developed back in the 1950's for diabetic patients who produced no insulin. While non-caloric the insulin response in people able to produce insulin has never been studied (if you know of a study I'd love to know), and it is believed by some that the artificial sweeteners actually trigger the exact same insulin response as real sugars, which directly corresponds to fat storage of blood borne glucose. So if you don't know if the stove is hot, do you touch it? Plus artifial sweeteners are exactly that, artificial. From your list of craved foods, I'm surprised you would even want them.

I also saw your reluctance to give up caffeine. The negative impact of caffeine on you ability to lose weight as well as it's effect on your body in general is enough to scare me away. I have almost no caffeine anymore, the headaches I got when I detoxed from it were enough to want to die. How good can something that causes that be.

As far as healthy, I am not a shining example of how to stick to this diet, I'll admit it is hard (at least for me). However, My laundry list of medical afflications are non-existent anymore. Daily headaches (I used to take excedrin like candy, more caffeine there too), I can count on one hand the headaches I've had in the past three years. My blood chemistries are better than they have ever been, and my blood pressure as well. I have run over 400 miles in the past 2 years, most of those while over 300 pounds. All of this while eating low-carb (admittedly not perfectly though).

I hope you get past your current funk and give this a real try, you won't be sorry. Best of luck with your wedding, I hope you reach all of your goals by then.

As far as some of your other concerns go. The first time you lost more in the first 14 days. Well currentl; you are only on day four, and that first big loss of weight (while admittedly encouraging) is mostly water anyway (which is why the negative press says the whole diet is only water loss). But the reason for that is your body burning through its glycogen stores (stored glucose), each molecule of glycogen is stored with two molecules of water. But it is not until you burn through all of that that the fat burning fun really starts.

Your comment about supplements is unfair. The diet progresses through foods to allow yourself time to learn which affect you in certain ways. And the doctor realized that initially you would be short on some nutrients, however once you progress through the diet properly, they become unnecessary to a point. Everyone should take a multi vitamin a day because nobody, I don't care how healthy their diet is gets enough of every nutrient every single day.

Addendum: As I keep reading your concerns re: don't do low-fat Atkins. Fats come in all forms besides frying. Add fats by adding in some avaocado, or have some olive oil on your veggies, full fat dressing (sugar free), etc.

                                Re: This diet is disgusting!!

Induction phase is 14 days long. It's not the entire Atkins Diet. It's not the only phase of Atkins in which weight loss occurs.

It takes very little added fat to make a meal "high" fat: at most it takes a tablespoon of added fat, like butter, olive oil or mayonnaise to make a meal high fat. The people who butter their bacon and dip their cheese into mayonnaise haven't read the book and/or don't understand what they have read.

There are some foods that are naturally high in fat. Eggs are high fat: about 75% of an egg's total calories is from fat. So eating a couple of boiled eggs for breakfast ensures you have eaten a high fat meal.

I enjoyed my Induction: I was finally able to eat real foods. No more fake low fat cheese or fake egg substitutes. I was able to eat the real foods.

I was able to eat steammed asparagus with real Hollandaise sauce (made from eggs, butter and lemon juice), broccoli stir-fried in a little peanut oil, and string beans (or haricot vert) with lemon and butter.

I was able to eat real cheeses like Brie and Camembert.

I ate lean cuts of meat, fish and shellfish.

I didn't feel fat eating these foods. I felt liberated.
