  • How important are supplements and/or vitamins?

    Alright, let me start out by saying my mom fell off the bandwagon on Friday because she couldn't give up her beer. But, I stayed on Atkins and did good until Sunday night when she bought about 4 bags of chips (which is my favorite snack food) and left them right in the open. Not only that but my favorite tv-show came on and of course I couldn't resist and ate 2 bags. I'm so pissed off about that. Anyways, thats not the reason I logged on.

    I logged on because I wanted to know how important supplements or vitamins really are. I can only afford the necessary foods for the Induction and since I screwed up on the last friggin' day of week one i'm going to have to buy more friggin' food. So, my question is, how important is it that I take my supplements and/or vitamins? I don't want to die or end up in the hospital, lol.

    On the other hand, I only gained 1 pound back from last nights binge and i'm still down 9lbs!

      Technically you don't need to take vitamins. You can get all your vitamins from the food you eat. The problem with that is you have to be the type of masochist that minutely examines every vitamin and nutrient you need, figures out what type of legal food contains them and what amount of food you will have to eat to meet those requirments. NOT an easy task or one that most people would want/have the time to do.

      If you aren't one of those people then I'd say at the very least you really need a good multi vitamin that meets Dr. Atkins guidelines. They really are relatively inexpensive and one good size bottle can last a year.

      Oh, and if you have a bit more money to spend then the next thing I'd get is a triple combo containing borrage oil, flax oil and fish oil. So many good benefits from those.

        If there is a shoppers drug mart near you, their LIFE brand vitamin is quite inexpensive(about $4-5) and is as good a quality as any other brand like Jamieson or Natural Source. Shoppers has an online store finder, in order to see if there is one near you. All their LIFE products are pretty good- we use a number of their supplements in our household. I think taking a multi is good anytime- even if you miss a day here and there.

        **well...I had a cheat, after a great start- and I'm starting again...just because I owe myself a clean slate.

          Thanks guys for the quick response! I was actually about to head to the store with my mom so I will see if she can buy me a bottle of multi vitamin!

            Make sure you buy a multivitamin with NO IRON! Buy a 50+ or seniors multivitamin.

              I dont take a vitamin, if my body lacks something i'll eat the food to put that right,

              for example, when my potassium is low for a day, i'll add something like spinach, to put it up.

              Though i do have multivitamins in the house if i feel the need for them, but i feel i eat healthy enough not to take them.

              this wouldnt work for everyone, i just look deeply into my daily menu to ensure that i get what i need.

                I really like taking supplements and vitamins because I feel "slow" without them. I notice that they REALLY help with my hair/skin/nails, as well as my energy levels--it's a rough day at the gym if I try to workout without my vitamins!

                  As for me, I feel naked without my Vitamins and supplements. Especially for those who are in lower stages of Atkins and are not able to eat a Large variety of food, I would recommend them.

                      Does anyone know about a multivitamin that is small in size? I have a hard time swallowing pills cuz I choked before on them and am afraid to take them whole(big). I hate to break it up because of the taste so if anyone knows of any multivitamin that is small, let me know please :P If not, then I will just have to stick with crushing

                          There are liquid multivitamins that you can take. They're a bit more expensive, but that might be worth it for you since you don't have to choke them down.

                            I tried chromium, and it made me horribly weepy and depressed! I read in Dr. Atkin's Vitanutrient Solution that it "can cause irritability" for people who haven't taken it before. I tossed it!

                            I also take borage oil, flaxseed oil, and EPA/DHA, in addition to vitamin C and biotin, and a chewable multi. Biotin made my hair GREAT-- but, as it is a B vitamin, added to my having insomnia. So I ended up taking a magnesium supplement in the evenings to counteract THAT.

                            A few weeks ago I dropped them ALL because of some mystery gain, but plan to return to all of the oils and the multi.

                              Jami - I have the same problem as you do with swallowing pills. They always make me gag. I found one that is really small and easy for me to take. Its One A Day Essentials. Good luck!
