  • Coffee??

OK...I confess....I'm a reformed heavy caffeine user. I've read some disturbing stuff about caffeine causing not just cravings, as DANDR says, but actually spikes up insulin. But other studies talk about its benefits for weight loss. When I'm headed to induction and really watching - my sugar cravings are usually OK.

What is people's experience w/coffee? Nowadays, I'm usually good for an espresso in the mornign and a cup during the day. That's it. Maybe a cup of tea if need be.

Anyone have any real world experience along these lines?

    Thanks!

I drink a lot of coffee. I've never tried to quit, but I did try to cut down one time and BF said that it would slow down metabolism a little bit from where it was. I have never noticed getting cravings from drinking coffee, but I know others have.

But you don't think having it in your diet slowed your weight loss? (BTW: I drink either an espresso shot or black coffee. I count each as 1 gram).

        Re: Coffee??

I haven't had any issues with it. I did stop putting milk in it and I never did use sweetner or sugar. I have between 2 and 3 cups spaced out throughout the day. It's a "your mileage may vary" kinda thing I think.

My only issue is alot of times I want a nibbley with my coffee. I save my flax allotment for "cookies" in the evening (my weakest time).

This recipe is almost exactly like the one I worked up. And don't forget the initial 30 seconds in the mike, it alters how the cookie will come out. I have also used ginger and pumpkin pie spice seasoning in these in place of cinnamon.

Hope this helps. It has saved my munchie-butt on many an occasion.

              Re: Coffee??

I think that the first time I did Atkins, I drank the same amount of coffee and lost weight faster than a lot of the people on here (without exercise). I think that the coffee is not what slows down my weight loss now. I think that if I was stricter about other things I eat, perhaps I would lose faster, but it gets hard when you get down to the last bit anyway so I'm not really sure.

                Re: Coffee??

I drink coffee everyday too. And a couple times a month I get one from Starbucks with Heavy cream and sugar free vanilla syrup
It hasn't stalled me, but hotdogs and salty peanuts have
Oh, and it doesn't give me cravings at all.
I always have it with 2 tablespoons of heavy cream and Sweetzfree (or Splenda). I get coffee EVERY morning on the way to work and I bring a little cup with me in the car with the heavy cream in it...lol

I think drinking coffee curbs my appetite, but that's just me

I think that's right. I went from 310 to 198 on Atkins and held for 4 years. But, I eventualy got sloppy and want to go from 230 back to 200. I'm now revisiting all my assumptions - and am trying to remember how much caffeine I was really drinking when I lost BIG the first time.

the lure of nuts & peanut butter was strong. I can't do them in moderation!!

                    Re: Coffee??

Coffee is the one thing I have difficulty giving up and I don't believe it stalls me but I did give it up the first time I was successful with Atkins. What I have to watch out for is the sweetner and cream. If I could give up coffee totally I'd not have to worry about those as well BUT I L. O. V. E. coffee. I have given it up off and on, but when I do I feel deprived. This WOE is wonderful because I never feel deprived....unless I give up coffee. Sooooooo, I struggle with this debate in my own head constantly.

                      Re: Coffee??

I gave up coffee for 6 months when I started this WOE. Gradually have added it back into my WOE and found it to be fine. What I did discover is that I have to shake up my sweetners. For months I was at a stand still. Every week I tried to change one thing to see what it was. By chance one week I did not have splenda, was using a generic sweetner and sure enough I broke my stall.
It is for sure a "your mileage may vary"............but how do you know it is not slowing you down until you give it up!

                        Hi!

How much sweetner were you using before? I have two spleda sachets a day....

I'm an espresso or black coffee guy myself.

When I'm feeling daffy and count the carb, I'll drink a soy capuccino and maybe drop a splenda - but you have to watch that. Starbucks sweetens the soy milk - so a grande comes to 12 grams or such. You can lighten it up by having them make it "dry" so it is just foam. That's not a bad compromise at all.

All my life starting from age 13 I been drinking coffee. All my family has very low blood pressure, my normal one is 80/55. I drink coffee about 3 times during a day, last one around 6PM. Never had any problems with coffee and Atkins. Of course I replaced everything for cream and sugar-free syrups with Splenda.

I am a coffee-holic too... try to quit... and have for 16 straight days once... but I just keep going back! I love it. At work I have been making decaf... I love it sooo much! But I think it can stall ya at times...although drinking it black is better... I usually have cream and splenda... I try to limit myself to 2 cups in the morning only and decaf in the afternoon at work. When I quit, I'll drink green tea to help wean myself off... helps with the head ache and withdrawal symptoms...then move to herbal tea... but so far... keep giving in to temptation...
