I got my book (finally) On page 233 (sample menus) he gives a "carb controlled strawberry shake" as a snack during induction.

what is that? is it a purchased item or a make-it-yourself thing??

Re: carb controlled strawberry shake HELP

Shakes, bars and mixes are all common denominators for a plateau/stall, so we dont recommend them.

I tried them after i'd been on this WOE for about 4 months and they made me stall and there isnt many people who can get away with them.

How far into this WOE are you? remember when you get up to Berries you can make your own shake with heavy cream!

If you want a shake (I got to that page again yesterday myself and was a little surprised to see it there). I would get a no-carb protein mix (can be expensive but a lot cheaper in the long run) and make it yourself - either by getting a strawberry flavor or (better choice) get vanilla and add some da-vinci's strawberry.

I have been making and playing with a few shakes lately because I got my new blender and such and since I am not adding anything to sweeten them (like splenda) because my protein powder is already sweetened with sucrolose, and of course yesterday because I look up, it's 3pm and I hadn't had lunch yet - but I don't find I stall with homemade shakes. With pre-made stuff from the store, I stalled everytime.

I agree with what everyone has said about the shakes...they stall me big time.

The sample menues directly contradict the Induction Rules listed in Chapter 11 and again in Chapter 18. If you notice on those "sample" menues, they include foods that used to be made by or sold exclusively by Atkins Nutritionals. In other words, the menues are commercials.

Also, if you read closely Dr. Atkins admits that the shakes, bars, etc. were developed grudgingly, because he recognized that people wanted something quick and easy. But he advocates whole foods primarily and to only use the carb conscious products in an "emergency".

This boards position on the bars, shakes, etc, a.k.a. "Frankenfood", regarding stalls is based on hundreds of pieces of anecdotal evidence from people on this board. Personally I use them occassionally (shakes mostly) and have never had an issue.

*Giggle* Ok, I'm just playing devils advocate. I've spent the last two weeks listening to you guys on what one can and cannot have and then I get the book and say 'huh?"
I don't eat protein powders of any kind. As far as I'm concerned, what I eat, I should be able to grow or make myself..... not that I have the time or talent for that, but I feel safer going by that standard.
I just wanted an explanation as to why you guys were so much stricter than ADBB's bible

Re: carb controlled strawberry shake HELP

I think it's more an experience version of what has happened to most people who have tried things like shakes etc.

I don't have a problem with shakes - as long as I add 24 oz extra water per shake drank. And I wouldn't use it during the first 14-days at all.

I memorized the 1997 version and scanned through the 2002 when I was on this WOL the first time. Now that I am reading it from cover to cover - I'm a little shocked at some of the advertising type things that were added in to boost the sales of his products.

You can make your own "protein" shakes using silken tofu, a bit of heavy cream, (cocoa, too, that counts as a spice) and some sweetener. Just remember to count the sweetener toward your daily allowance. Once you begin to climb the rungs, you can add peanut butter (rung 3), or berries (rung 4).

The tofu shakes are really thick and filling...and they're NATURAL!

Re: carb controlled strawberry shake HELP

This is from the book "Dr. Robert Atkins--The True Story of the Man Behind the War on Carbohydrates", by Lisa Rogak, copyright 2005.

NEWS FLASH: Dr. Robert Atkins NEVER was very comfortable with the low carb bars and low-carb "food" and resisted for a very long time. They were the bailiwick of the fairly new wife, Veronica Atkins ( Atkins was a bachelor and unrepentant womanizer until he was 56 years old!). Still, they never took off until Dr. Atkins gave over the reins of the empire in August of 2000 and he went back to just tending to his patients. Atkins Nutritionals was then totally run by some marketing execs. The book states that the execs and Dr. Atkins reached an agreement that they would develop the business as they saw fit. While press reports announced that they were just running Atkins Nutritionals, in truth they were actually running the entire Atkins empire, including the Atkins Center.

This was when Dr. Atkins took the backseat and Veronica Atkins started working closely with the new people running the company to change the vision of the company to what it has become--a low-carb food industry.

This is an excerpt from the book regarding Dr. Atkins resisting the low-carb foods. This was when the low fat craze was happening and he lost many patients and the ones left wanted an easier way to stay on the diet.

The patients who stayed, however, were extremely loyal to both Atkins and his low-carb diet. But they had one major complaint: In a fast-paced world where everything was low in fat or high in carbohydrates, or both, it was difficult to find something that they could eat on the run while still remaining on the low-carb program. They had no time to prepare their own snacks. Perhaps something like the low-fat energy bars sold at convenience stores would be great, only low-carb instead.

Atkins hesitated, and for good reason. One of the things he constantly stressed with his patients was that they should eat foods that were as close to their natural state as possible, and, for him, any kind of energy bar was as good as poison since it was clearly processed food.

(I'm leaving out a paragraph about him not wanting to franchise out his name while he was alive)

But his patients continued to beg him for something--"You sell the vitamins and other supplements, why not energy bars?" they reasoned--and so with great reluctance, he gave in and developed not only an energy bar but also a low-carb shake that would make it easier for patients to keep to their Atkins program.

"As long as you only use it for emergencies," he reminded them.
So you see, friends--the original Atkins that conceived the Atkins Diet did not really want us to eat low-carb junk food!

I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants the whole story on the Atkins low-carb program. Did you know that Atkins did not actually write ANY of his books? They were all done by ghostwriters.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Sunny, very interesting insights... thanks for sharing.

Chicklady, I understand your confusion. It might sound like we are following the rules as we see fit, rather than exactly what he describes. The reality is that we follow the book at a minimum, but talk around here about stricter variations based on lessons learned from many, many people. Your results may vary.

That's the thing about Atkins... it's different for different people. And frankly, some people will do things that many consider a no-no... like allowing nuts from day 1... and they'll lose weight. Or very few veggies... and they'll lose, too. While others do something completely allowable... like use heavy cream or drink coffee... and they find that they stall. We've found around here that most people do the best following the rules carefully. So, our recommendations are "by the book" around here, along with some additional (stricter) suggestions based on things people have learned the hard way.

Hope that helps clarify some of the confusion. Your questions mean you're reading, listening, and learning -- all of which are a sign you are preparing yourself for success. Keep it up!
