    Yes, "Good Calories, Bad Calories"

Make sure you read Dr. Atkins book first. Then, if that's not enough for you, read "Good Calories, Bad Calories".

Re: Touchy Topic: Dr. Atkins' death

I almost ordered that book today but I am waiting for my 2002 DANDR to arrive as the one I had was from 1999.

I also get people who make comments about Dr. Atkins and how he "had a heart attack" (not sure how they are qualified to argue a certificate of death) and how the same will happen to me...but I prefer to let the scale and all the research speak for itself.

Maybe I'm the only crazy thinking this, buuuut...I thought doctor's couldn't talk about a patient's health history. Can't it cause them to lose their license?

Really? Can you elaborate on this. I always thought the point of working out was to help you lose weight. Sorry to get off topic, but that statement stuck out when I was reading this thread.

Re: Touchy Topic: Dr. Atkins' death

Regarding exercise, the main reason it does not promote weight loss is that exercise causes you to work up an appetite and eat more. Simply exercising more and eating less isn't sustainable. You body will always want to recoup the lost calories. There's also the fact that you need to do enormous amounts of exercise just to burn off the amount of calories equivalent to a single donut.

That doesn't mean that exercise is useless to anyone wishing to lose weight. Taubes never makes this claim. What exercise does is affect the quality of your weight loss such that you lose fat and not muscle, which is why it's a non-nogotiable in the Atkins WoE/WoL.

So, the next time someone tells you that all you have to do to lose weight is eat less and exercise more, slap them upside the head with Taubes' book.

Re: Touchy Topic: Dr. Atkins' death

The "Taubes says exercise is useless" myth is already taking on a similar status to the "Atkins says eat no carbs" one.

In his book Taubes makes an excellent and compelling arguement about why exercising alone is NOT going to make you lose weight. And why the overly simplistic "eat less, move more" solution to weight loss is a fallacy. But he never says that exercise is not an essential part of a healthy lifestyle - it's very good for you in a myriad of ways, but without being accompanied by the right way of eating won't contribute much, if at all, to weight loss.

"While I eat less fat than he suggests"

"I just opt to balance out my calories/carbs/proteins/fats/sat fats a certain way."

MrsBrittany, the fat content of Atkins is the core of the way of eating. It isn't really optional. Atkins is a high fat, moderate protein, low carb diet. If you are reducing fat below that which is recommended, especially during induction, then the diet may be low carb, but it is no longer Atkins.

Wow, this is good stuff, I'm doing some more research now.

And MrsBittany, I did that the first time I tried this WOL, chicken and other meats I like with no where near enough fat and I didn't lose anything in Induction and stopped Atkins after a month. Now I do things the right way, lose weight, but I never started eating tons of meat I don't like, I get my fat from other places like Mock French Toast and Flaxseed Muffins.

There is also a sexed up news story effect here.
The story of a "high fat diet doctor dies due to a heart attack".

Well, you can remove any truth from that statement, any journalistic credibility, any fact checking, just run that story as is, because it is a sexy news story.

People remember these things, these stories. These news agendas.

                          Put it this way;

Here's two news stories. One real story, one fabricated by a news desk agency.

                          Story One
A Medically trained Doctor, takes time, effort, and trails to test an initial idea that he thinks would help with people loosing weight.
Finding that it works mostly. He guesses that the science and principles could be hard to understand and the failure of the diet.
So he writes a book in layman's terms for the general populous. Even takes the effort twice, because it was still hard to understand the first time, and he felt he could do better, and he did.

                          Story Two.
High fat diet doctor, dies due to a heart attack.

Now, a mini challenge, which of those two stories is reported, and which story gets left on the B-roll?
                          Hayden.

Yea what they said. Taubes book goes into some detail about how both sides of the eat less/exercise more dogma are not supported by the evidence. Starvation diets (reduced calorie to 1500 or as little as 600 per day) consistently fail and usually lead to ADDED weight. Exercise trials averaged between a 3 lb loss and a 2 lb gain or something like that. Not too significant. But you would never dream that is what the research says when you listen to our "health experts".

That's because eating low carb creates freak April snow storms in NYC and icy sidewalks. I mean, everyone knows that eating low carb makes ice more slippery! Heck, if everyone ate low carb, I think the Earth will stop warming and start cooling.
