Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

I'm with Brook, more than happy to talk about it, especially if people ae genuinely interested and want to learn about it, but also if they want to argue the toss.

It has led to some very interesting conversations. One amazing recent one was with a woman who was mad to learn more, because she thought from the little she had heard about it, it would really be the kind of food she would love eating. Except of course what she had heard was wrong - the attraction for her was that on Atkins "you don't have to eat vegetables".

It turns out she has, in her adult life, eaten NO vegetables. NONE. Not even lettuce, or a tomato or fried onion - absolutely nothing. Well, there is one she eats - potato, but only as fries. Once her mother stopped standing over her and making her eat them they went, completely. She doesn't eat much fruit either. I found that pretty unbelieveable, but it's true.

I've had some lively arguements about the chances of my imminent death from carb deficiency, though they are not hard to deal with when you are looking and obviously feeling pretty healthy.

My favourite thing though is to invite to dinner those who say ok but they could "never survive without rice/pasta/bread/potato/sugar/whatever" because it would be so dull - and cook something really, really good, healthy and Atkins legal. Did one of these a couple of weeks ago, and made Cauliflower/shrimp bisque, followed by Pork steak with walnut and stilton stuffing, creamy mushroom sauce and roast vegetables, and finishing up with mixed berries and vanilla cream. Just, you know, so they could see for themselves how much suffering was involved!

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

its funny you know......if you talk to some in finance, or someone at target, or at the gas station......they all may tell you atkins is bad. and to be careful on that diet!

but i spoke with my doctor and she respected the diet and just told me....."keep losing". and the other day i spoke with a personal trainer at the gym....and he said atkins is great.

so really........this question comes back to us. we needn';t share this with people that haven't the educational background to fully understand it!

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

At first I was quite shy about saying 'Atkins' to people - but then once I'd lost more weight and gained some confidence I felt that I owed it to Dr A and to others who might benefit from this WOL to tell the truth.

People just have misconceptions about it - they've got the idea it is all meat and no vegetables. I eat more vegetables than anyone I know.

And yes, evidence speaks for itself, especially when people know you exercise a lot and haven't keeled over yet!

People are just ignorant, and after a while I find it a bit tedious trying to educate them. Proof is in the pudding, it was they that asked how you lost all that weight. They shouldn't ask if they don't want to know!

Mirya, I use the allergic excuse too! lol (It is true to a certain extent, carbs make me "swell" up )

Here I was building up a nice lather about anti-Atkins folks an then
matawguro had to go and be all mature and reasonable!! heh Nice response, I may try the diplomatic approach in the future.

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

I almost never get the chance to discuss Atkins any more. But I'm with Kate and Brook - bring it on. Maybe word has gotten around. And in business you don't want to offend a customer so I have to tone down quite a bit sometimes. But I really love a "your cholesterol will go through the roof" comment. Yea, mine went up to about 230 but my HDL (good cholesterol) is 88. That makes my ratio excellent. And did you know that total cholesterol is just about useless in predicting heart trouble. The ratio is better but the science now is that a very dense ldl (bad cholesterol) is probably the key to predicting heart trouble. And did you know that that cholseterol is produced when we eat a high carbohydrate diet? Next question.

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

I would just say that I lost the weight by making healthy choices and eating healthy. End of subject.

When people start lecturing about how "DANGEROUS" Atkins is. I put my hand up and tell them to stop before they sound really stupid. I ask them if they have read the 2002 edition of DANDR and if they haven't, then I say read the book, then we'll discuss this. I then turn away.

It's like giving a heroin addict just enough to keep it in their system, but not quite enought to get high, leaving them in a constant state of miserable limbo.
Great explanation as to why not to eat certain foods, even if the carb count is allowed. Or, even if the food group is allowed. (like NUTS or Dairy for me)

I'm with Kate, Brook, and Hudson. If someone asks me, I tell them ATKINS. I got a lot more negativity when i first started and I was still FAT. Now, though, I don't get as much as that. They certainly can't argue about how it's unhealthy when I look great, I feel great, I am more active than most people. They'll usually start talking about low fat, and i tell them exactly how much fat I eat. They usually look at me in amazement. Then I tell them how I've also lowered my LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and improved my HDL and that my cardiovascular health has never been better. They are usually prett dazed after that.

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

Today i got a few comments that i'm looking slimmer and obviously the "What are you doing question pops out!! I told them that i do not eat sugar, starch and flour.....they were like so what do u eat....ME right now!....all types of cheese, eggs, chicken, pork, beef, bacon, sausages, lots of salads and veggies topped with some mayo dressing.....oh yeah, i might take some sugar free jello or whipped cream as dessert and a big smile on my face.

Their faces and mouth said it all....CHEESE!! MAYO......but how can you stay with out bread & pasta? I said, well its always nice to dive your mouth into a nice piece of bread, but its a choice i guess and with all the food i can eat its not like i'll starve without it. Oh and that is the beginning, in the long run i can eat more cause each phase means adding more not cutting out!!

Anyway Dr A was mentioned as this WOE come from somewhere and he should get credit for it. By the end of the conversation they were speechless.....But yes i have a few family members who tell me, carrots u dont eat carrots that's silly....or you might have someone go....oh come on, take just one it will not harm. I'll just say than YOU TAKE IT!!

Some will like your knowledge, others will criticize, a few might even not comment, at the end EVERY ONE IS ENTITLED to have their opinion, but hey feel proud with what you are doing cause its your decision so its part of who you are!!

                    Viva Low Carb...

Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!

I work in a boutique, and customers comment on my weight loss all of the time. I have to be polite, but it is hard. While *I* understand all the responses that you all have given, regarding the picture of health that we are now, that's just not good enough for many who are h*ll-bent on "saving" me from myself.

There is one girl, in particular, that really irks me when she comes into the store. She is a senior at LSU, and is about to graduate in dietetics (sp?) and nutrition... she wants to compose diets/menus in hospitals. She is the one who gives me the most grief about how dangerous Atkins. So, she doesn't buy anything that I have to say in defense of Atkins, because that is her field of study and "specialty". She is convinced that I am about to drop dead, no matter how healthy I may look. I gave her an example of my menu for a day, and she said that I wasn't really doing Atkins, because I ate so many veggies. WTF?!

So, I have just about given up defending Atkins, other than telling them that my doctor is the one who put me on it. Tired of talking to a brick wall. Instead, I refer them to the Gary Taubes book. Just too many people who can't deal with the "A" word. (Atkins)

because that is her field of study and "specialty".
When I was a student I was probably that arrogant too!! You really do think you know it all, until life comes along!

This attitude in the so-called experts always makes me think of one thing in my own past/eductation, of which I am not especially proud and I don't think any of those who trained with me are either.

I trained as a vet. During our lectures on nutrition we all obediently wrote down in our notes, in great detail, how meat and bone meal was a very valuable source of nutrition for cattle, we learned about what a major role it played in formulating diets for both beef and dairy herds. And in exams, written and oral, we happily regurgitated what we had been told. And then we all went forth confident of our superior knowledge and preached it to our farmer clients.

                        Then BSE came along...........

Looking back now it still amazes me that in a room full of intelligent students NOT ONE, in my year or any other I know of, ever put their hand up and asked "Is it a good idea to be feeding bits of cattle and sheep to cattle, who are not carnivorous animals". Nobody. Ever.

Of course we all know now that its a very, very bad idea indeed. But it took a disaster to make us see beyond what we were told and happily accepted as truth.

Mitzi, your young dietician is just repeating what she is being taught. I think the Taubes book challenge is your best bet. Every time she comes in "have you read Taubes book?" will at least slow her down.

I'm very proud to say I'm on atkins. I'll give credit where credit's due and the good dr deserves it. Overall people are really excited about it when I tell them how much i've lost - results dont lie.

I do get some resistence. I got some today from this chef I know. he's a chef so therefore he knows everything about food. He is about 200 lbs overweight and is trying to tell me how atkins doesn't let you eat enough....

I told him to read the book or talk to a doctor before condemming something that WORKS. lol he also told me I needed to be on a "moderation diet." I am being moderate.. 20 carbs per day moderate!
