Re: discussing this diet with people..Hard to do!
I'm with Brook, more than happy to talk about it, especially if people ae genuinely interested and want to learn about it, but also if they want to argue the toss.
It has led to some very interesting conversations. One amazing recent one was with a woman who was mad to learn more, because she thought from the little she had heard about it, it would really be the kind of food she would love eating. Except of course what she had heard was wrong - the attraction for her was that on Atkins "you don't have to eat vegetables".
It turns out she has, in her adult life, eaten NO vegetables. NONE. Not even lettuce, or a tomato or fried onion - absolutely nothing. Well, there is one she eats - potato, but only as fries. Once her mother stopped standing over her and making her eat them they went, completely. She doesn't eat much fruit either. I found that pretty unbelieveable, but it's true.
I've had some lively arguements about the chances of my imminent death from carb deficiency, though they are not hard to deal with when you are looking and obviously feeling pretty healthy.
My favourite thing though is to invite to dinner those who say ok but they could "never survive without rice/pasta/bread/potato/sugar/whatever" because it would be so dull - and cook something really, really good, healthy and Atkins legal. Did one of these a couple of weeks ago, and made Cauliflower/shrimp bisque, followed by Pork steak with walnut and stilton stuffing, creamy mushroom sauce and roast vegetables, and finishing up with mixed berries and vanilla cream. Just, you know, so they could see for themselves how much suffering was involved!

WTF?!
Instead, I refer them to the Gary Taubes book. Just too many people who can't deal with the "A" word. (Atkins)
