  • Myoplex/EAS Low Carb Protein Shakes?

    Hey All,

Dinner time is tough for me, as I am hungry and preparing non-atkins food for my family. I don't cheat, but I do nibble and even meat calories add up fast (at a certain point, calories do matter).

This week I am trying EAS low carb protein shakes as my dinner. Quite low in calories, and a mental motivator "You cannot have anything but this shake - so no mindless nibbling". A couple of long time boardies have successfully incorporated them (nods to Don and Mitzi) and I wanted to hear about any other positive outcomes.

I am putting this out there aware that any sort of non-natural food is generally a no-no and many people have trouble with cravings or stalls. This question is aimed towards experienced low carbers who know their bodies well. I am not eating these because I am dying for sweet things, but rather to combat my evening munchie demons and to keep my brain focued on the goal during distractive periods.

    Thoughts?

    Greetings,

In my opinion if you are nibbling and have evening munchies, to me it doesn't make sense to have something that won't give you any texture, i.e., chewing etc. Perhaps you would be better off having an organized snack near you when you are cooking so instead of munching on dinner you will have food at hand to eat.

This is just me but it doesn't make sense to incorporate a liquid dinner in place of actual food to combat munchies, i think you would be setting yourself up for failure doing this instead of actually having something to munch/chew on.

Yeah, tried that. Nibbling begets nibbling for me, and I have found that the allowing a little tends to open the floodgates.

Ironically I always did better on more restrictive diets (<1000 calories a day) than on more reasonable ones (<1500) for the same psychological reasons. My brain tends, despite my efforts, to categorize things in terms of black and white. If it's always on "restrict", I am successful. If it goes to "moderate" then I lose focus. Just the way I am wired, for better or worse.

Not discounting your advice. It is good advice. I have just already tried that path unsuccessfully and so am trying out a different route.

Titian, I've actually just recently tried those shakes as the nutritionist recommended them for my husband. Though I know you said you aren't doing them for to satisfy a sweet tooth, they actually are very good -- better than Slimfast low carb or Atkins. She said they are the healthiest out there -- with the least amount of crap in them. But, if I recall, they are quite low in calories.... around 120 maybe? So I wouldn't think they'd provide enough calories for dinner -- unless you also do a substantial late afternoon snack?

            Hey Adena!
My snack tends to be up there, as do my meals. Usually a 1oz cheese bar and 1 serving of pork rinds (so roughly 200 calories, 1 carb). I eat a large breakfast and usually a large lunch. I am hoping to retrain myself towards the "Breakfast like a king, lunch like a yeoman, dinner like a pauper" philosophy. I had my first shake tonight. Not too bad, actually, though they definitely need to be cold. I had it with my liter of water and two hours later I am not hungry, and my calories are just under 1500, so spot on.

I have used them in the past. I buy the protien and make them with unsweetened almond breeze and a dash of heavy whipping cream for taste. I have not experienced stalls with them nor cravings and if you wait 30 minutes or so after drinking they really are very satisfying and tend to stick with you as well.

Re: Myoplex/EAS Low Carb Protein Shakes?

I can't live without my protein shakes..i find them an awesome sweet 'shake' snack when i need one, and they definately cut back on my mindless nibbling and snacking. I don't use the EAS ones, i actually just buy the Great Value from walmart (120 cals, 1g carbs, 26g's protein i think). Sometimes i'll have one at lunchtime if i'm not quite hungry enough for a full lunch, but haven't eaten for a while since b'fast..they kind of tie me over for a couple of hours.

Like spirit talker i mix mine with Almond Breeze and a little whipping cream, i always buy vanilla flavour so i can flavour them myself. Sometimes i add Fry's cocoa powder, berries, banana extract, tbsn peanut butter etc. I also occaisionally add a scoop to my steel cut oats to add protein (note that most of these are OWL run specific and not for induction!).

I've never had an issue with them as far as stalls etc. Way back when, when i was in a stall, i tried cutting them out for a while but it turns out they weren't causing me problems.

I find them a better choice ingredient wise then atkins bars etc.

                  Hope this helps!

                    Thanks Jen!

What is almond breeze? This is the first I have heard of it. How much are the walmart ones?

                    Titian

ps - last night went well. I think these may be an option for me.

Re: Myoplex/EAS Low Carb Protein Shakes?

I pay about 21.99 for the Walmart one, and it's a the big 910 g container (about 2 pounds). Actually the brand is the generic 'Equate' brand..Walmarts own, not sure if it goes by the same name in the US, i know sometimes they change them. It's so far the cheapest one i've found, and it mixes well. I also bought a little betty crocker 1 serving blender that i just love to make shakes in. Got that at walmart too.

Almond breeze is a good sub for soy milk, I thnk it's the closest to milk that so far i've tried. I don't really like the taste of soy milk i prefere the almond one. Doesn't have really any protein though. Here's the nutrional info http://www23.netrition.com/blue_diam...nd_breeze.html I'd watch to see how you react with this, you might want to wait for pre-maint? there are a couple of starches in the ingredients, though i don't think very much, i've never had an issue with it. I like to have it on fibre one cereal..i can't tell it's not milk. We don't get the vanilla and chocolate unsweetened here..only the plain..so not sure what they're like!

I have tried the vanilla unsweetened and i am not a fan. I only use the original unsweetened. i like it simply plain too. Not much protien but great on vitamins and calcium and so creamy. No nasty soy aftertaste either. And as far as carb content way better.

Well, day two of the EAS premixed, chocolate caramel flavor. Stuck at work without my wallet, I had a handful of mixed nuts, a handful of sugar snap peas and my shake, and so far so good. Not hungry, and the flavor, once properly chilled, was just fine. I have to sit in class for the next 4.5 hours, so we'll see how I am feeling by 10.

Another option is to make a shake or smoothie out of silken tofu. I have tried shakes in the past (both liquid and protein powder versions) and was not impressed by them. Perhaps I've been trying the wrong ones? For me, silken tofu is the way to go. Blend the tofu with some heavy cream and flavorings of your choice (sweetener, cocoa, peanut butter, berries, banana, whatever is appropriate for your rung. Strawberries are AWESOME!!!!) and you'll have a nice thick shake/smoothie that is TRULY filling! Of course, this requires that you like tofu. I love the stuff! But many people find it has a "strange" taste that takes some getting used to.

This option is better if you find that the "frankenfood"ish ingredients stall you or cause other symptoms. I think it's also a bit cheaper?
