  • Whats up with all this dextrose?

Okay this is really upsetting me. After getting rid of Lawry's Seasoned salt because of the added sugar...i've been using salt and pepper to season my foods

Now i just happened to look on the back of the salt container...the ingredients reads: Salt, calcium silicate, dextrose, potassium iodide

now, to my understanding dextrose is a sugar alchohol..should i be worried about this?. I also notice that detrose is in splenda..and a few other seasonings..I'm confused

Dextrose isn't a sugar alcohol, it's just a sugar. Weird to find it in salt, though there is sugar of some sort in almost all seasonings, you have to be obsessive about reading labels.

Splenda is Maladextrine, which is a derivitive of dextrose but it doesn't contain dextrose itself.

Re: Whats up with all this dextrose?

Dextrose is the same thing as glucose, which is a simple sugar, NOT a sugar alcohol.

Many seasonings contain sugar, even if it's in very small doses. For the typical, modern palate, it just tastes better to us. There's a steakhouse chain in my town that has "prairie dust" sprinkled on their steaks. When I asked if this prairie dust contained sugar, the server had to ask and later told me "yes."

If you use a critical eye at the ingredient labels of many prepackaged seasoning mixtures, you will most likely see some form of sugar in it. Best to make your own to be on the safe side.

It is true that Splenda does have dextrose in it, which is why you can't consume it like crazy. For some people, the small of dextrose won't cause them to stall, but for others, they must avoid Splenda like the plague. Although the individual serving sizes of Splenda say "0 carbs," that's not really true. Indeed, it is under 1 gram, but just at 0.9 grams of carbs & 4 calories. So these packets can really add up!

Here are some more Splenda amounts with calories and carbs:

      1 tsp = 0.5 gm carb = 2 calories
one half cup = 12 gm carb = 48 calories
      1 cup = 24 gm carb = 96 calories

Just be careful in how much you use, if any at all!

      Hope this helps.

If Splenda has dextrose in it, how come it isn't listed in the ingredients? I thought it was just maladextrin?

Re: Whats up with all this dextrose?

Oh, and just to be clear, Splenda packets contains sucralose, maltodextrin, and dextrose while the Splenda granular product contains sucralose and maltodextrin.

Maltodextrin is a polysaccharide and is basically made up of many dextrose (glucose) molecules and is a deriviative of starch. It is easy for our bodies to break down maltodextrin and is readily absorbed into our system, just like glucose. So even if the granular version of Splenda doesn't contain dextrose (glucose) per se, once it is broken down in our digestive system, you have lots of dextrose molecules ready for action.

I don't know...it's clearly stated on my box of Splenda, but maybe they have different packaging for those not in the US?

My packet, which is the granular Splenda, just says maltodextrin and sucrolose, nothing else. I realised it was broken down into some sugars, but didn't know there were any in the product ingredients. Funny they don't state them, because legally they are supposed to. Maybe it's a different formulation in the EU or something, though I kinda doubt it.

Oh sorry, I see now, its the packets that have dextrose, not the granular. I've never seen the packet here, don't know if they are even available.

The packets of Stevia that I looked at had maltodextrin in them, too.

All iodized salt has dextrose in it. It has to.
Iodized table salt contains a small amount of potassium iodide and dextrose (a sugar used to stabilize the iodide) as a dietary supplement to prevent goiter and mental retardation.

I am giving up iodized salt, though I need the iodine, because of the dextrose. I am getting a kelp supplement that will supply iodine. We really need iodine for the thyroid, and mental functioning.

I use the liquid...it's "brewed" (or whatever they do)in water and grapefruit seed extract I did have a box of packets----wayyyyy too expensive----that used erythritol as the filler. The liquid is a much better value for the buck! There's probably carbs in grapefruit seeds-although I don't know that for sure- but I've read some positive effects of grapefruit seed, and a 2 ounce bottle lasts me a few month....therefore, whatever few carbs that bottle may have, is quite spread out.
