  • Reverse Atkins?

I am doing very well following Atkins according to plan. My husband is very supportive and in fact, lost a lot of weight on Atkins several years ago. For whatever reason, he is resisting going back on the diet with me now. I finally got him to agree to a 'low carb" diet of 50-60 grams a day with no sugar.

I figure, since I prepare all the food, i can just work him down the ladder until he is losing enough not to want to quit. It will take a little creativity. So far today his breakfast and lunch combined were about 30 carbs. I am pretty sure I can keep him down to about another 10 carbs for dinner.

What do you guys think? Will it work? He has never had trouble losing once he sets his mind to it.

    Re: Reverse Atkins?

Good for you taking an active role in making sure your hubby gets a healthy meal! I don't blame him for not wanting to "get back on" or "try another diet". Sometimes working backward is okay for some people, but it all depends on the codependency on the foods we have. I don't have any offical advise to give you on working the plan backwards, I'm still climbing back on the wagon and that usally backfires on me (). But I just wanted to say I think it's awesome that you're doing the best for the both of you. Maybe you'll even make him believe he's not living on a low carb way of eating for life after you start making those great meals, the energy you both have from exercise, the weight loss that will appear, and he'll see that eating the Atkins way is a way for a healthy life

    Best wishes!

      Re: Reverse Atkins?

Since you do all the cooking, what's his other option? Cooking for himself? If you can show him that doing Atkins does not have to feel like a diet, it should work. You may never get him to do induction, but he should lose weight and start to feel better.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Hope this works... though I'm sure it will, once your hub realises he feels so much better on Atkins. Kudos to you for your creativity!

Happy losing to the both of you!

I think it's great. I cook and hubby will eat what I cook. Last night's dinner was Italian sausage with red, green and yellow peppers and onion with a side of green beans. I offered a roll to put sausage on and he declined. This is the third time within a few days he's declined the bread that I've offered. He eats it straight up, just like me.

            Re: Reverse Atkins?

Well my husband went off to work today with his higher end Atkins lunch perfectly happy after three days. He is aware that he is lo carbing and is perfectly willing to do that, just not Atkins. The fact is he is doing Atkins just starting at the higher end of OWL. So far he thinks he is eating about 60 carbs a day, but is actually eating about 40. From what I recall, last time we did Atkins together, he can lose very well in the 40-60 carb range.

I would have preferred him to start with the induction level, but so far he is very happy with this. In a week or two I will know how well it is actually working on his weight!

                  Re: Reverse Atkins? Update

This morning my husband told me that he is now wearing his old jeans again very comfortably. He could get into them before but very uncomfortably and has regularly been wearing a size higher.

He told me that he is very plesed with how well I am doing Atkins, but he really prefers the diet I have put him on instead and says he thinks he can stay on "that" diet long term.

Last night we had salad plates with a helping of chicken salad, crab salad over lettuce and 1/4 cup sliced strawberries. The night before we had boneless chicken breast with slices of ham on top and homemade crab imperial over top of that plus a cup of asparagus, and this morning he ate scrambled eggs with a muffin in a minute and 2 slices of bacon.

He likes that diet better then Atkins

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                      LOL! That's super!
Knowing my husband, he would be picking up a soda at work or something and screwing everything up. Or having a second cup of coffee at work with real sugar in it.
I was worried about that with your man, but it looks like you guys have got it down! Congratulations!

Way to go! So...will you eventually tell your DH that he IS on Atkins? Funny how some folks think that they can't eat well on this WOE. I'm glad he's happy and is seeing results and I think you're doing a GREAT job in getting both of you healthy. Congrats!

I guess he realizes he is on some form of Atkins, but he doesn't think it is the real thing.

I'm not worried about him eating extra stuff at work. He might occasionally, but for the most part he really does want to lose. I do remember though that when we did low carb years ago together, I ran into him at a Christmas bazaar stuffing cookies. He gave me a guilty look and held up a reindeer and said"it's ok! IT's meat!"

i've been meaning to respond to this post for a couple of days, but just not have the time now. i'm kinda doing what you're doing with my hubby also, only a little different. he's in the beginning stages of finding out he has an overactive thyroid, and won't have his first visit with the endo. doctor until later this month. he didn't want to completely change his way of eating until he has a chance to speak to the doctor about it. however, he's been eating the meals i cook and so i'm hoping he will reap some of the benefits of that. he's still eating some junk food too, and fixing other sides that are not so atkins friendly to have with the meals, but hopefully it will still be beneficial. if given the doctor's approval, i'm sure he will begin the journey with me. the best part about the whole thing for me is, that my will power is so strong, i'm not even tempted by the things he's got in the house that i used to so heavily rely on.

Monie, that is exactly why it was important to me that my husband do Atkins completely. He wanted to eat all the "good" stuff like crab legs with butter, etc. but also wanted his pastries and stuff.

While I think Atkins is the best overall eating plan, I can't think of anything worse than combining Atkins with all the junk food too. All the benefits of controlling insulin are thrown out the window and the harmful things that people normally blame on a high fat diet become true: High cholestrol, high blood pressure, stored fat, etc. I kept telling my husband you have to pick either/or but you can't have it both ways. Fortunately he has picked low carb, although he still doesn't think his plan is actually Atkins .

I hope your husband will cut the junk food too or he will do himself serious harm. Glad to see someone else working on this with a "reluctant" spouse LOL
