Sherri, I just bought some horseradish the other day from Walmart and it doesn't have HFCS!!!! I forget the brand name though. The weird thing is that I found it in the dairy section of walmart right by the sour cream??? Who knows. When I get home tonight I'll look at the brand name for you and let you know!

Just prepared horseradish or horseradish sauce? I use Gold's Hot Cream Style Prepared Horse Radish. All it has is horseradish, vinegar and salt. It's in the refrigerated dairy section in my stores. My favorite brand (Kraft) of horseradish sauce has HFCS.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

I've been checking labels on meat for years. A member (Peach) from my old Atkins board brought this to our attention in 2004 and I was shocked. They just pump up raw meat to make it fuller or juicier. I've been lax with checking the label on my organic chicken. I wonder if it has anything in there. I'm out of chicken at the moment, but now I'm really wondering.

Sunny, I can't remember now if Sugar was the first or the second...but it was definitely one of the top two ingredients.

              Amazing.

I'm not sure that Big Sugar selling out to the state will make a difference. If Big Sugar isn't putting so much pressure for protection from the government, most likely free trade will lessen the price of sugar. What would be cool (although unlikely) is that the demand for ethanol would drive the price of HFCS up and reduce its use as a food source! That would be pretty cool. Maybe they'd take it out of that Lipton UNSWEETENED tea mix!

Re: When Chicken isn't just chicken

I like that idea of starting a list of brands with the *surprise* sugar. Maybe we can somehow make a sticky out if it somewhere for quick reference. I know for myself, I've been checking the labels on everything (including meat) after finding out so many products you would least expect to have sugar...actually do. I just bought a big bag of chicken leg quarters from Walmart because it was on sale for less than 5 bucks. I bring it home and it has a product called "carageenan" (sp?) or something. So I google the heck out of that....I was totally expecting it to be a sugar...but it wasn't. However, it was still some chemical thickening agent, I believe, so almost equally disappointing. Even things labelled "organic" and "natural" don't seem safe.
Let's get that list started....or someone let me know if it has been already. Thanks!

Re: When Chicken isn't just chicken

Lipton's UNSWEETENED tea having HFCS just baffles me! Who pays these people to do their mixing and labeling? Gosh, a monkey could probably do better than they did!

Thanks for bringing this up! I buy frozen chicken tenders by the bulk from a local market. I'll have to check when I go back for my next purchase and double check the labels. I thought I was being so careful, especially after learning that most of the creamers on the market have corn syrup solids/liquids in it.

I guess nows a good time to make friends with our local neighbors with a dairy and chicken farms

Re: When Chicken isn't just chicken

Wow, thanks for posting that Joy. I appreciate your detective work - who'd-a-thunk that raw chicken would have sugar? No wonder it's so tasty!

I've been buying meats at farmers markets on the weekends but SO expensive - like $22/lb for pasture-fed steak, or $20 for a chicken - that I don't want to afford it a lot of the time.

Although I tend to shop urban, so no Wal-Mart, I do buy a lot of chicken at the supermarket and will check closely next time for hidden sugar.

I was just watching a talk Paul Check gave on youtube and he addresses this in part 10 and 11. Very interesting. Chicken isn't the only meat. Most meats in regular grocery stores have sugar added. The more I read the worse this looks.

When you get to the legume rung, be sure and check the labels on beans. I was going to use organic black beans in some chili, and found potato starch in the ingredients.

It is crazy what they put potato or other starches in - most pre-shredded cheese has quite a lotadded to keep the shreds from sticking together.
