    Re: Atkins Products???

    Hi Julie!
As you can see this is what we're all here for---to learn from eachother...everybody is different, you take what everyone has posted and make your own decisions from it.

This board wouldn't be so helpful and so popular if we didn't have all these different experiences and opinions. What works for you might not work for me, or her, or him....we are all different!!

    Good luck on your journey!!

      Re: Atkins Products???

Just trying to get my point across to people who can't seem to read my whole reply before judging it.

Nowhere in the book does it state that Atkins products are illegal during Induction, either. You state that it is due to nuts? The only reason Dr. Atkins suggested no nuts was due to the fact that many people can't control their intake of them. Otherwise, if you can control yourself, they are fine. It says this in DANDR 2002. Sugar alcohols? Yes, I actually agree with you... but many people will also claim that the sugar alcohols have no impact on them whatsoever.

Just trying to be as objective as possible here. I find dogmatic people highly annoying, and strive not to be one of them.

          Re: Atkins Products???

Regardless of whether julirama or Nick is correct, Mitzi nailed it. THIS BOARD does the 2002 version and A LOT of people have had trouble with the Atkins frankenfoods. The idea of the 2002 book is to retrain your tastebuds to like other real foods, not find a substitute that still feeds your sweet tooth. If you are among the lucky (and small) group that suffers no cravings or stalls from the bars, that's terrific. But you will not have retrained yourself to want better alternatives to sweet junky foods. If I were betting on whether or not they will stall you or cause cravings, I would bet on you having problems and vote with the "put the bars away for now" folks.

              Re: Atkins Products???

That's where it gets tough sometimes, Nick. If I am giving advice I feel like advising on the side that will most likely do no harm. Because I don't know if it will affect someone, I am more likely to advise a conservative real food approach. And, because so many people write that they have problems, I feel like you have to include that disclaimer even if the bars do say they are all right for induction.

My answer is based on what I would want to hear if I were in Julie's shoes---I would want to know if these things are likely to cause a problem. And if I were really intending on doing a clean induction (and that does mean different things to different people) I would want to know how to get the best start.

Even if something works fine for me, I don't advise it if I know lots of others have problems with it. I just wouldn't want to send them off track. I leave those threads to others for better answers than I can give.

Would I eat an Atkins bar in lieu of a high carb food in an emergency--sure. But Julie, you have stocked up and if you are counting on them as a candy or chips alternate...that's a different matter.

Bottom line is weigh the posts and think about your body. If you try them and have a problem, put them away. If your thought was to do the purest induction you can, weigh the posts and do what feels right.

Since we all weigh in with our own experiences you will get a wide range of responses with almost any question. Everyone means well. We just come at it from different perspectives.

                Re: Atkins Products???

Well, regardless of what the book says I can't see eating chemicals when I could eat healty food. I don't believe that there are people who 'can't' go without bars and shakes. You can do anything you set your mind to. I believe that if Doctor A was still alive, he would admit that the Atkins products are not healthy and he would not be selling them. That is just my opinion. Anyway, they are VERY costly. Make a low-carb cheesecake if you must have something sweet, that is what I do. I just don't want to eat chemicals if I can help it. Please, no anger. This is just my opinion.

I still don't understand why people are attacking me. I AGREE WITH YOU! But I don't believe you should give a partisan opinion. You should make it as objective as possible AND THEN throw in your two cents. That would be the civilized thing to do.

                    Re: Atkins Products???

As Jonny Bowden says, "Junk is junk, high-carb or low-carb." He's right. He's also correct when he says the the food industry is not our friend. You need to take what the nutrition (I use that term very lightly) label says with a whole shaker of salt.

It's your choice. You always have choices, but if you really want to lose weight for life while improving your health, you need to eat low-carb junk foods only in an emergency.

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

                      Re: Atkins Products???

I've got a whole cabinet full of bars in their that I'm trying to talk my husband into eating.

When I go the whole processed low carb/sugar free route, I can maintain my weight with no problem. When I want to lose weight, there is no way it's happening while I'm eating bars and sugar free candy and low carb ice cream and peanuts and almonds. Hmm, I'm getting hungry.

This is just my experience. God bless those who can do them in moderation. I'm of the mindset that if one bar gives me nutrition, then what does three do for me?

                        Re: Atkins Products???

I personally never had a problem with the bars when I did atkins before. so I have them around now, just in case of emergency, heh! and only a couple. I don't think I've ever eaten an entire one in one sitting, either. I either have a half, or a third, and then put it away.

I do agree that you should try to do without, entirely, during induction to re-train your tastebuds. but having a piece of an advantage bar is much better than having peanut butter cups or whatever sugary crap you'd be dying for otherwise.

My only comment....the bars taste like turd! Ok, what I imagine turd to taste like....I haven't really tried turd And then there's the issues with isolation of proteins from soy, whey, etc.
Ok, back to your regularly scheduled program..........

                            Chicklady, LOL!! (Turd??)

Ok, I read thru this whole thread, and I appreciate ALL the input, collectively. I will not go out and buy them myself, because I know I have a severe issue putting down cashews. If there were treats around, I would not be able to leave them alone. Just like with Oreos and Snickers, I can't leave them alone. I just can't bring that kind of temptation into the house, and I have truly learned to appreciate whole foods. This board has given me the tools to make transportable, pure snacks that are healthy, anyone should be able to succeed in that respect.

But on the other hand, when I have lost all my weight, sure, I may pick up some of that stuff for emergencies. It is nice to know it is there, when the time comes, and I know I have a handle on things, I may give it a whirl, but this chick couldn't do it upon induction. Its about knowing our limits, folks. Thanks for info on both sides.

Everyone keeps talking about adding the bars in Maintenance. All I want to say is - BE CAREFUL! I have been in Maintenance since 11/11/07 am on Day 5 of a strict Induction from the trouble I've had with these very kinds of things... all of it Atkins legal!
