Well, actually, they are just now starting to do studies on those "added" vitamins and whether they do more harm than good in the absence of other parts of the actual food they would come from in nature that would accompany them.

        Oh boy....You caught me

Could someone please take my crutches away? This darn leg needs to heal!

That's been my main problem is eating all the frankenfoods especially the bars and other "low-carb" stuff. It causes stalls and mad cravings that end up leading to bad bad bad food choices.

I think what everyone is trying to say is that based on their personal experiences and the knowledge they have obtained from reading DANDR 2002 edition that it would be best to avoid all frankenfoods because they spell nothing but trouble. If you want optimal results stay away. If you want a squeaky clean Induction stay away.

The bars and shakes should be used ONLY IN EMERGENCIES

Now maybe we should look into what the definition of "emergencies" is....My definition would be have one when you're pantry and fridge are completely empty (I mean nothing in it!) and there is absolutely no way for you to get to the store to buy something legal and you don't grow anything legal.. Or if you're in a situation that does not offer anything legal for you to eat like a party or something (although that's unlikely cause most parties have some kind o' veggie or meat or something...).

          Great point, IrishMom
It would be an odd 'emergency' I feel that meant I could go out and buy a self-styled lowcarb bar and not be able to find some unprocessed food that was 'legal' for me instead!!
In UK it is harder to source them than to buy meat/cheese/veg/mayo, so we have less temptation to choose them.

In an emergency like I had the last weeks when unexpectedly I had to spend the day in a hospital with only their selection of vending machine options of crisps (chips in USA) or chocolate bars and a small volunteer-run snack bar with a chill cabinet and slices of cake and biscuits (cookies in USA).

I scanned the shelves of the display chill cabinet for a while to make the least bad selection. I considered buying some sandwiches and only eating the innards of them then spotted a small pack of cheddar cheese containing 2 x 25 gram lumps. bingo!! A legal snack to keep me going

If there had been nothing there to eat I would have taken half an hour out to go to the nearby supermarket and buy some celery sticks and a pot of cream cheese and maybe a piece of cooked chicken, but luckily didnt have to that time.

Now when I might need to dash DH to hospital at short notice I make sure I have a few small ziplock bags with a measured ounce of unsalted almonds handy to grab'n'go along with a filled water bottle as my emergency stash.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I am with you. I rarely eat nuts because they can trigger me, but a measured ounce of almonds in the purse can be a lifesaver on those crazy days.

Nick, good for you for bowing out when you saw it was a losing battle to get your point across. While I don't like the bars at all, I totally understand your point.

Your picture looks like you are in pretty good shape so you must be doing something right. Keep it up...however it works for you!

Julie, I hope you got what you needed from this thread even with the differing opinions.

And I agree. However, I've also known many people who have relied on this crutch and have successfully gotten to and maintained their goals. They are as healthy as any successful person in this forum, and while their menu might cost more due to the products, they are still reaping the same benefits.
In your post immediately before this one, you wrote:
Multiple studies need to be done, providing similar conclusions in order for a theory to become sound. While some have been done on Atkins, only recently (e.g. within the last decade) have they made big leaps. They still need to analyze long-term effects of the program (certainly longer than 2 years).
Therefore, without doing a study on people who use these processed products compared to those who do not, you cannot conclusively say they are "reaping the same benefits." You may assume that they are, but you cannot say with any definity that they are.

Anyway, for as long as I've been on this Board there have always been discussions about these highly processed bars, shakes, etc. They are essentially nonsense discussions because the people who really want to use them will find every excuse to use them regardless of what is written here.

So if you choose to use them, just be informed about them: know they are processed, know that they do cause weight loss stalls and slow downs in some people. Then decide if the benefits outweighs the risks in using them. Whatever you decide, you're the one who has to deal with the consequences and the benefits.

I'm signing off this thread. So have fun discussing it.

                  Re: Atkins Products???

Good morning all. I just wanted to comment on the Atkins foods. I had Atkins shakes in and bars in my frig at work and went this weekend without them. I was down 3 lbs this morning. I would recommend not using them until you reach your target weight.

I also wanted to note that I made the family pancakes (non induction friendly) on
Sunday. I tasted a bite of the pancake out of curiosity. I can tell you that it
had no taste. I did not desire anymore. I reached for the eggs and made myself
a delicious mushroom omelet. I also tried out the mock hash browns. I put
garlic & onions in them. They were delicious. I made the family a baked chicken dinner and pumpkin with pumpkin pie spice, cinnamin, a splash of half n half, a splash of vanilla 1/3 cup of splenda, butter. Pecan pieces on the top. It reminded me of warm pumpkin pie or sweet potato casserole.

I love this forum. I have pulled so much valuable information from this site. What a great support system and have found all the valuable information priceless.

Are you referring to sugar alcohols? I remember the old bars said "3g of carbs!" or whatever on the top of the wrapper, and then when you checked the back, they'd say 21g of sugar alcohols.

Personally, I haven't eaten an Atkins bar since the first time I tried the diet in 2003. The bars are OK, but I found the shakes to be totally gross. Generally, something loaded with soy protein powder has that effect on me --- it seems gritty and makes me feel like I'm going to explode.

That said, I don't really have a sweet tooth. The killers for me are bread and chips.

Astrogirl, I agree. There are many wonderful, healthy low carb treats you can make on your own. Bread and butter?? That is a different story, I just keep telling myself that it isn't that good and its really unhealthy.
Try to get 80-100 ounces a day!
