Re: Buddy List July 28 - Aug 3

      hey buddies,

well, july is almost over and i am happy to report that all 4 of my monthly challenges are complete. WHEW!!!!!! didn't think i was gonna make it, especiall since everything that happened last friday.

mike- hope your first day back on track was a good one. i know you can do it. if you need us for support, you know where to find us.

bonnie- congrats on the 1 year anniversary. good for you getting right back on track. just remember that there are always going to be little celebrations like that and there may come a time when you have to decide to say "no thank you, i can't eat that". diabetics are faced with the same situations like that all the time, and have to say "no" for health reasons. people who struggle with weight are in a similar situation, for health reasons, we have to learn to say "no thank you" to alot of things too. if we use the celebrations as an excuse for indulging, then eventually, we are indulging more than eating healthy.

bill- you're an exercising machine....even i don't exercise that much....even though i do exercise just about everyday. and i know the whole clock watching routine, nothing like thinking you've been exercising forever and find out you've still have more mins left than what you've actually had done.

joe-ya know money isn't everything, and at the end of the day the times you spend with the kiddies are much more valueable than any amount of money. hpoefully when you visit the scale, it will be a very positive one. will be waiting to hear the news.

elsie- so proud of you doing those stairs....you'll be giving us exercisers a run for our money in no time.

val- so sorry to hear you're leaving us. you were doing so well. i can't say it's the diet causing the hair loss, cause i've never really had that problem. however, you've been under alot of stress with school, the baby, and trying to diet and exercise. maybe once things calm down in your life a little you should consider revisiting the plan. stress can do alot to our bodies, and could be a possible cause. please come and visit us anytime to let us know how things are going. take care (HUGS)

        Telogen Effluvium
Telogen effluvium is a condition where more than normal amounts of hair fall out. There is a general 'thinning' of the hair. Unlike some other hair and scalp conditions, it is temporary and the hair growth usually recovers.

The normal life cycle of scalp hair
Hair is made in tiny pouches in the skin called hair follicles. Each scalp hair has a normal 'life cycle'. Most scalp hairs last about three years and grow about 1 cm a month. After a period of time (about three years), each hair on the scalp comes to the end of its life and falls out. The hair follicle rests for a short while. It then starts to make a new hair.
All the hairs on the scalp are at different stages in their life cycle. At any one time about 1 in 100 scalp hairs are at the end of their life ready to fall out. This is why you will commonly find a few hairs on your shoulders, and some hairs fall out each time you wash your hair.

What are the symptoms of telogen effluvium? If you have telogen effluvium, a lot of hairs fall out from your scalp. This is more than normal and most noticeable when you wash your hair. However, your scalp and the remaining hair look healthy. You will not have patches of hair loss (bald patches), but rather a generalised thinning.

Who gets telogen effluvium? Telogen effluvium usually occurs about 1-3 months after a major stress to the body. The most common time it occurs is in women about 1-3 months after childbirth. Other times include 1-3 months after a major operation, accident, or illness.

        Why does telogen effluvium occur?
A major stressful event such as childbirth or major surgery can interrupt and stop the growth of some hairs. It tends to affect older hairs which are brought to an end of their life cycle earlier than the usual three years or so. Many more hairs than usual are then ready to fall out. It takes 1-3 months for the affected hairs to fall out after their growth has stopped. After a short time, new hairs then grow from the hair follicles as usual. A normal pattern and thickness of hair returns within a few months once these new hairs are established.
However, persistent excess hair shedding may be caused by iron deficiency or an underactive thyroid gland. Your doctor may do a blood test to check for these if you have any other symptoms of these conditions.

What is the treatment for telogen effluvium?
No treatment is available or required. Once the stressful event is passed, your hair thickness will usually return to normal within a few months.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Happy Friday everyone!!! DH and I are on Day 12 of Induction. It's been going pretty well. Still haven't gotten on the scale, but I don't plan on it doing so for like another 2 weeks. DH and I decided we'd give ourselves a month to see where we are at.

I'm starting to get back into exercising. I joined a couple of challenges here and can't wait to start seeing how much I can do! I'm also heading back to gym! I'm really looking forward it.

Glad to see everyone's progress!!! Enjoy today, especially if it's payday!!!

Scarlet--congrads on the excercise ramp up--Notice your not complaining!
I'm only in the second week of C25K so its still fairly easy. Believe me, once I start getting into the longer stretches of running you'll hear all about it, LOL. Sounds like you're doing great though, congrats!

Val - sorry to see you go. Good luck to you!

Carmella - congrats on the exercise. Hope your gym has AC. Its been pretty hot the last couple of days.

              Morning Buds!

it's Friday! hope you all have a great day!

Val--hope you solve the hair loss problem--You have been doing so many things at once--it really could be STRESS---then add a strick diet and excercise to that STRESS ---it just might be to much to ask.
Still you should see a Doctor if you can--something more than Self diagnosis will at least sqaush any concerns you may have.

Caramella--Your on your way!! Excercise is so much more than for the BODY---your World out-look will change too! and any depression or depressive moods--(which trigger overeating) you "may" have had-- dissolves away fairly quickly!

Elsie, Monie, Scarlet--I get up early (which "was" a feat in itself!!)
and "now" do 1.5 to 2 hours excercise--it's quiet--the oppressive heat is at bay--and have time for a quick shower and make the family Breakfast in the morn before work--(do my last hour or so--in the eve)

I "thought" seeing thier half open eye's looking at me and the breakfast
all laid out for them-- when they came stumbling into the kitchen was worth a million dollars!

What's Priceless??...After close to a month on this WOL for them--
"WE" get up early--"WE" work-out together and "WE-make breakfast as a family--THANKS DR A!! we are a much closer family then when we went flying off in all directions-doing the latest fad diet that popped up in the media mainstream!

Re: Buddy List July 28 - Aug 3

was reading the posts we joined & (Elsie started) in early June recently--

So sad that we lost so many Bud's!!!
I felt sort of responsible--did I help(and fail at) keep them motivated enough? Did the board and myself not inspire them enough?
Was tracking and announcing our success too much for them??
I stopped tracking in case it was...

Wendsday I will be 60 days into this new way of life and new way of eating...I followed the book we use to the letter--I never stumbled, or
cheated (am I typing about me?? don't sound like "me"!) and was on this board and had the Honor of being a Buddy!--almost everyday

BUT--it does work! and I am going to see this thru to lifelong maintenance!
I weighed in this morning at 244--I of coarse would like to say on the 60th
                day:
40 pounds lost--half my target!-But I am close and Happy! and will not be unhappy if I don't make it!!!--I WILL SOON ENOUGH!!

Elsie--we printed the last of the recipe's for DD (thank you! thank you! thank you!) and Jackie created a little book called:
Corinne's cookbook! started a whole new culinary adventure for all of us!

monie...glad you were able to complete them! What an awesome feeling that must be especially because you didn't think you would. Shows just what you can accomplish!

                  Thanks for the info Elizellen!!

Carmella...glad to hear things going well for DH and you. Keep it up.

Vanessa...you can whine all you want so long as you are whining while you are doing them...LOL!

Bill...I love it that your family is doing this together. A great bonding story!! Way to go on the exercising...and on leading your family to a healthier life style.

I, personally, like reading about everyone's success. Here is why...then I know it is working!!! I don't want to read only about the struggle...though I am fine with those as well as I can relate...but I want to read about some success. To know that this WOL does work. That the hard work and struggles do have a pay off. I have been wondering if anyone was getting anywhere because it seems so long inbetween the success reports. I think that as a buddy we can only do our best to reach out and acknowledge those that are posting. That is the reason I started this thread. For the people that wanted interaction. I didn't want a thread where everyone just checked in but didn't help each other and didn't really read about what the other people were doing..if I wanted that one there was already one happening. I have enjoyed all of our buddy interactions on this list...getting to know each other and seeming more real to each other. I think that because of feeling a bit more of a online family here that we have helped some stay on plan or made some other good difference in their journey. I know that the only reason I am back here after a 3 year absence is because Elizellen pm'ed me and that gave me the incentive to start again...that she remembered me and took the time to reach out. That really touched me. She didn't need to do that. She is a busy lady with enough on her plate with this board never mind taking the time to email someone who wasn't even here. You just never know when or how you might make a difference in someone's life. This is one of the reasons I try to respond to everyone so that they know they have been heard. Even for those that quit I know that I tried. And some didn't quit Atkins...they just quit our thread....and that is okay...so it wasn't for them..to each their own. Anyway...I could go on but I won't.

Ps...Bill...there are more recipes...I just haven't gone through them all yet. LOL!

                      Hey guys!

I'm sorry I haven't posted on here in such a long time..but as it was Tuesday morning my computer decided to bite the big one. I haven't been off my diet or anything and the "flu" symptoms aren't really going away. I have persisted though...I have been drinking more water and eating more veggies!

My DH and I are going to be purchasing a new computer tonight so that I can get back online at home--as it is I am writing from my apartment complexes computer room.

I haven't known Val all that long but I wish her good luck with everything. I work in a pharmacy and see people struggling with all sorts of health issues. Getting your BP down is the best you can do for yourself. I hope to see you back on here soon!

Alright, I can't write much more...but I will get back online soon!

                      --Robin

PS: At least this buddy didn't really leave...i just had to take a few days off!

Hey you guys, thanks for the nice words, I really appreciate a kind send off, even though I will miss you all too!

Joe, yes, I am quitting, I am sorry.

Elizellen, (Bill) thank you for your post, but there isn't anything significant that could have caused this in that time frame. I did 3 years of school before and kept all my hair intact! It happened the exact same way, at the 6 week mark when I did South Beach before, I know exactly what is happening, it is my body reacting to eating extremely LC. And BF is experiencing the same thing, it is obvious.

Elsie, thanks so much for making this a place to come to share our experiences, I hope your thread continues to be a positive place and that it helps many of you succeed in your wt loss. You rock!!!

I just need to listen to my body and adjust accordingly.

                            Morning Buddies:

Val - sorry to hear this WOE was causing you problems and that you are leaving.

Bill - congrats on the 40 lbs and 60 days w/o a cheat! That inspires me to keep going.

I'm starting over on induction today. I don't really know why, but I've lost my focus. I did so well and was really focused for the first month, and had a lot of success. For the last week I've felt like I'm on a unicycle, wobbling this way and that, just this close to falling off completely.

It's always a mind issue. How I relate to and tolerate (or not) feeling uncomfortable. One of my favorite authors is Pema Chodron. She has a great description of how running away from that feeling of edginess leads to ever increasing suffering and addiction. I'll post it someday - I think it's a perfect description of emotional eating. I have years of habit built up that says eating certain foods and drinking pop will take the edge off. It's going to take time to develop new habits.

I stumbled yesterday morning because I felt so lousy - not sick, just really tired and groggy. The story my mind was telling me was that I'd feel better if I just had some pop and something sweet. I believe success for me can only come when I develop enough mindfulness to hear that story, understand it for what it is, and just let it go without acting on it. Just let the uncomfortable feeling be as it is until it goes away.

Anyway, I want to thank all you for this forum and for your support. In past attempts I was always going solo. Even though I've stumbled a lot lately, just being part of this group keeps me from giving up completely.

I hope you all have a great weekend. It's going to be hotter than all get out here (KS), so I plan on staying indoors as much as I can!

Mike...way to go on not giving up! It really is mind over matter.

When I am in the right mind set this WOE is SOOOO easy. I don't feel deprived or tempted at all. BUT when I am not in that zone it all starts being difficult. Right now I am not in that zone. So I am not being good at drinking my water or getting all my veggies in even though I am not cheating. And because I am giving it a halfass attempt I am getting halfass results the scale is jumping up and down and up again staying around the same by weigh day. When I am on point and doing it right then the weight really does come off.

So what will help you Mike? A daily challenge between you and me?? Planing your meals and snacks until you get back in the zone? Posting them? Let us know because we want to help. You are so worth the effort Mike!!!

Sugarshack...good for you for getting back on track. Did you do that right after or did you use the cheat to justify more cheats? What can you do different? Have a plan for the next box of candy! Way to go on the 15 pounds down!
