  • Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

    Hi folks,
I am losing hair... and lots of it.
NO clumps or anything, but its coming out... and I am beginning to see the results. I have always had really long and really thick thick hair... I can feel the difference in the size of my pony tail. I am beginning to be alarmed. Many would say I am crazy because I still have great hair, but I am beginning to worry about more and more of it falling out. I have noticed more coming out in the last 2 weeks and have basically been denying that it has been happening. I take a good multi-vitamin, I take some other odds and sods for suppliments, I don't feel depriaved at all calorie wise... I am eating really well... should I be worried? should I get out of ketosis for a while... I have basically been in ketosis since the end of April... I AM LOST HERE

I DON"T WANT TO LOSE MY HAIR....

I read a thread the other day with a great link in it talking about hairloss and to look for new growth, and explaining why the hairloss happens.
I just wonder if anyone else here is experiencing this or has experienced it... and what they did to rememdy it...

    HELP!!!!

Re: Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

hair loss can happen due to many reasons. Let me start with the most common cause of hair loss in women: 1. any stress ( physical/mental). Usually the stress precedes hair loss by a period of 3 -4 months, so try to remember if you were under stress a couple of months ago ( anything like fever, child birth, severe dieting, and so on).
      2. Iron deficieny anemia: this is also very common among females. Ferritin (iron stores in the body) can drop down to very low levels and cause hair loss. If this is the case, you have to take iron supplements for at least 3 months to see results.(Besides your Multivitamin)
      3. other organic causes like underactive thyroid/ over active thyroid.
I would recommend you get your ferritin levels and thyroid function tests measured. If they turn out to be normal, then continue taking your supplements ( omega 3 fish oil helps too) and make sure you are getting good amount of proteins in your diet daily . It usually takes 3 months to see an improvement in your hair.
I hope that this was helpful.

Since being diagnosed with diabetes, I've noticed my hair has noticeably thinned. I used to have THICK heavy coarse leg hair and now its baby fine. I have practically no underarm hair anymore either and the hair on my head is so much finer but thankfully it hasn't fallen out. I'm wondering if you might be suffering from high blood sugar?

Re: Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

About 6 months after I started Atkins, I noticed my hair started coming out in large quantities. I went to my doctor and she did a few blood tests and found that my Biotin levels were all normal and I wasn't lacking in iron or any of the major Vitamins associated with hair growth/loss. The best she could tell me is that it had to do with my recent weight loss and there was no way I could stop it by taking any supplements/medication because my levels were all normal. The only thing I could do was wait it out and it would eventually stop and grow back. However, she also said it can take a year or two before it grows back completely.

Sure enough, about another 6 months after the hair started falling out it apruptly stopped. Roughly 2 years later my hair is almost completely back to normal. So in short, if the hair loss is weight loss related, once it starts there's not much you can do to stop it or expedite it's regrowth. All you can do it wait.

Re: Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

I had hair loss at about 3-4 months on Atkins. It stopped soon after and the hair started growing again. Stress on the body in any way can cause hair loss. My father in law had a stroke years ago and that caused his hair to fall out too. Good stress and bad stress can cause this. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you start looking bald.

Re: Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

                  Thanks everyone for your responses.

I am feeling better about it today probably because it is humid and my hair is way curly so I can hardly tell that things are thinner...

I also had some time during my morning walk to think things through and I weighed things, and frankly I would rather be losing my hair than NOT losing this weight. I am attached to my hair but would shave my head if it meant I would not reach my goals.

hair is an emotionally charged issue for women, and while I am dealing with this, I don't want anyone who is reading this to NOT do Atkins for fear of this. Changing our lives through Atkins is so important and something that will allow us to live longer more fufilled lives. I do know my hair will grow back. I have to tell myself I am ok with that...

Thanks everyone for your support and suggestions.

I am actually terrified of loosing my hair. I haven't noticed anything yet, except the normal every day loss. Although, I am only in the start of the 4th week now. I've always had such beautiful hair, I'd say it is the best part of me, that says so conceded, but it's true. Do you loose so much hair that you have bald spots or does it come out more evenly and just get thinner? And it does eventually stabilize and all come back right?

I started losing my hair recently as well. It started about 2 months ago. I find that some weeks I'm losing lots of hair and then others hardly anything at all. I began taking a vitamin B12 along with my multi-vitamin and salmon oil capsule every day after complaining to my mom about the hair loss. She said that stress can cause it and she lost alot of hair after giving birth. An herbalist recommended extra B12 and that seemed to do the trick. I've been taking it for 1.5 weeks and so far have had normal loss this week, so fingers crossed. Hope we get this hair loss problem sorted. All the best!

Re: Hair Loss ( Its A Reality)

Hey girls, sorry but I have to jump in here. My bf and I stopped Atkins because after 6 weeks on it, we were losing our hair, dramatically! I could not believe the amount of hair in my comb in the mornings! It was terrible. This happened to me the last time I tried LC too. We both quit Atkins, and promptly, the problems stopped too, but our hair is noticeably thinner, and I know it will take time to grow it back, it is really bad.

I am wondering what was missing from our diets that caused this. So I asked my Dr, she said the Atkins diet is where the body actually feeds on itself. No wonder the hair loss. While I was strictly on Atkins and followed it for almost 2 months, the line is drawn at the hair loss. I believe that this way of eating is NOT the answer! I just went back to eating regularly, sensibly, and I have not put any wt back on. So any way, some food for thought, I hate to see everyone losing hair senselessly. Sorry, obviously not an Atkins fan anymore, just a fan of being truly healthy, and this is definitely NOT the way to go. Take care of yourselves.

DO NOT freak about the hair loss.
Weight Loss, Hair Loss and Low Carb - Low Carb

It is temporary and the hair will grow back.

'The body feeds on itself' by burning fat for energy.
That is kind of the point. Hair loss is temporary for those who experience it, and it will return.

I also lost a ton of hair my first time doing atkins a few years ago. people actually notice a balding area in front. i had to do a comb over(like donald trump) but not that extreme. now my hair is shoulder length and I have hair loss, but not as bad as last time.
I can tell when im losing hair ;when at night I find hair inside my bra. My best friend just had gastric bypass in may and she has lost 110lbs already and she is starting to lose hair too. So I think its just associated with large weight loss.

hair grows back; Id rather be bald and healthy. You can always buy a nice wig; and I will if I get that bald spot again.

If losing hair was indicative of something bad happening to your body, then giving birth is a very bad thing. Every time I was pregnant, hair was great, lost tons when I had the baby, above the sides of my forehead practically bare. And it grew back just fine every time.. all 4 times.

The last time I did Atkins, I did not have hair loss. Not this time so far, but it has only been a month. If I start shedding, it won't be like I have never had a shedding phase before.

I'll wear hats for a while and be fashionable!
