  • 3 questions from a newbie

    1. Why do the net carbs on the back of an Atkins bar add up to MUCH higher than the number advertised on the front? I emailed Atkins Nutritional helpline and they talked about glycerin. I just feel worried about eating them. It's like a 6-7 carb difference, and I'm on Day 4 induction.

    2. I chew Nicorette, and I am on various medications (including some of the anti-depressant and anti-anxiety variety). When I first read Atkins several years ago, he mentioned that these types of drugs can slow weight loss and almost keep you out of ketosis. Has anyone else experienced this or found a way around it?

    3. What's the cheapest way you all have found to buy ketosis sticks? The prices vary wildly, it seems. Are some brands better than others?

    Thanks!

Ill try my best to answer

    1) With the Bars they also subtract sugar alcohols I think. It stalls some and not others. They don't bother me, but I eat one a week, if that.

    2) The medications from what I have read can also stall your weight lose or slow it. As for nicorette, I'm not sure, but nicotine like caffeine sucks.

    3) Ketostix. I dont buy them my stanky breath is more than enough to let me know when I'm in or out.

I can't do the Atkins bars. It throws me off, and we won't even talk about the side effects of Malitol on my body.

I've found ketostix fairly cheap at Walgreens, almost half of what I paid at Target or Wal-Mart.

Even subtracting the sugar alcohols, which I've come to consider dubious, doesn't get the nutrition info anywhere close to the advertised net carbs.

But thank you so very much for sharing what you knew! This is a really friendly group. I'm not even sure how I found you guys (the Google process fades!) but I'm GLAD!

glycerin can also be subtracted, per Atkins, but most people avoid the bars on induction and most avoid them altogether . It is a your mileage might vary thing. Some people are stalled by them and others not.

I can answer the nicorette gum question as I have used it in the past. 4mg: is .59 carb
              2mg: is .58 carb

Although they have never stalled me or put me out of ketosis.

i have read on here not to waste your money on the ketostix = of course that was after i bought some...

the bad breath/ taste in the mouth can be diluted with water.. drink more water.. mine is gone.. (so i am told by the husband and co-workers) but i am still in ketosis

i really have no experience with medications.. sorry

                hope this helps a bit

OMG, I can't believe Nicorette has carbs!

The cost hasn't been enough to make me quit, but this might!!!

Listen: I really want to thank all of you and the board in general for your attention to my questions and for the good information.

This is the "groupiest" most welcoming board I've ever wandered into. I really don't feel alone!

                  Thanks to everyone~

razz, some folks have gone the route of cutting those ketostis in half, length wise to get double the amount.

And to add to this one...

I've yet to read an Atkins bar label that only has induction allowed ingredients listed on it.

Maybe their made differently in other places that just have fat, protein, dairy, and veggies (ingredients allowed on induction), but they're not around here.

Re: 3 questions from a newbie

Glycerin is derived from vegetable oil, so I don't know how it would have any carbs?
But watch out for those sugar alcohols, especially maltitol, mannitol and lactitol. Your best bet, if you must, is to find something sweetened with erythritol and inulin.
Erythritol is the only one with a GL of zero, has a maximum absorbtion of .2 calories per gram (that's point two) while maltitol will give you 2 calories per gram....that translates into 1/2 gram of carb per gram of maltitol!!!! Inulin (and other names it goes by, such as ogliofructoside(sp?) ) is a sweet fiber.
                        Oh,,,,, and HI!!!!

Re: 3 questions from a newbie

I am also confused about the Atkins Bars.

I was curious so I had to look up the #'s.

                          Nutritional info:

                          Fat 12 g
                          Carbohydrates 20g
                          Fibre 0g
                          Sugars 1g
                          Sugar alcohols 9 g
                          Protein 4g

But the front of the bar said 3 net carbs. I can't figure it out from the nutritional info how it works out to 3 carbs...anyone??

I'm coming up with 11, myself (20-9 sugar alcohols).

                            You have me stumped, too.
