Can u be in Ketosis but not losing weight?

  • Can u be in Ketosis but not losing weight?

    Hey , i just managed to find some ketostix in my area.., I had managed to convince myself that i had thrown myself out of ketosis because i havent really lost anything in over 2-3 weeks. ( i should also mention, i became less thirsty and the awful taste in my mouth has gone 2)

    However, i was very shocked when the stick turned dark purple, during the day, and before bed.. And yes i drank over 4litres of water that day

    So here is some more details, I started using my treadmill about 13 days ago Almost daily, my weight has been going up from 88.8 to 89.5(kilos) every morning. I just cant break it.. whenever i get under 89, its up the next morning.

    I drink water all the time, And im eating ground beef, and veggies recipe my mum has been making for me, its basically ground beef, red & green capiscan, Celery,mushrooms,Onion, Pepper & alittle salt. Its soooo damn good. We cook enough to last for 3 days and freeze it... I also have grated cheese on top of this meal.

    Yesterday was my "Rest day" and i ate that for lunch & dinner, without working out.. and today i have gained another 2.2lbs.. But im still in Ketosis.

    The supermarket Swears that the ground beef has no carbs in it, or they would be on the label because its "againts the law" to sell meat without it listed on package.. (this is from 2 diff supermarkets) Am i using 2 many veggies? Because im putting enough in to last 3 days... Are all the carbs mixing together and making it high in carbs??? i dunno... *sigh* (i only eat small bowls, and there doesnt appear to be many veggies in the bowl when im eating lol)

    From Tomorrow, im going to start eating chops, cauliflour and beans. Im tired of all this hard work and not losing

    But, i just wanted to know.. can u be in Ketosis without Losing Weight, And can u also be in starvation mode(storing all my fat) while in Ketosis

    I know i ask alot of questions from time to time. I would just rather ask people with personal Exp. And i really want to get back on track

    Hey babygurl! It looks like you're doing the right things.... exercising, drinking lots of water, etc. Hang in there. I in the same boat you are.... ketosis.... but not seeing any weight loss. I am hearing that you should measure yourself to see if you are losing inches instead of pounds. Looks like you have lost almost 30 pounds so far.... it might just be time for your body to shrink a little bit before you lose anymore pounds. Isn't that a great thought?!

      Short answer is yes, you can be in ketosis and not losing. You can also NOT be in ketosis and still lose.
      That won''t help you any . First, it's not unusual to have plateaus or stalls, or "breaks" from losing. Jarvist is right....your body might be reaaranging fat.
      Secondly, you should figure out exactly what your eating. onions are pretty high carb, and your mom may be using lots of them. you need to know.
      You also need to know exactly whats in your food because it could be that you're not eating enough and your body has slowed it's metabolism to preserve what it can.
      Without knowing what your meals really are, it's not possible to figure out just why you're not losing.

        you may be converting fat into muscle... muscle weighs more than fat... and burns more fat for a longer tiime... it may explain the increase in weight. the scale is not your friend... at least on a daily basis. MEASURE MEASURE MEASURE....

          I agree with eclectikat, all that exercise is building muscle. The more important thing is, how do you feel? How are you clothes fitting? That's what really matters.

            The answers to this post certainly do make me feel a bit better.. because I am on the 12th day of induction and after the first two days I haven't been losing one single ounce, some days the scales even go UP! And I am sticking RELIGIOUSLY to schedule, two scrambled eggs for b'fast, grilled meat and grilled fish for lunch/dinner, the right vegetables in the right dosage.. and I AM in Ketosis, but not losing anything (. My blubbery belly has become a bit more "compact", but my clothes don't really fit loser. This is so frustrating, particularly because I made it through first PMS and now a throat infection WITHOUT pampering myself in any way with comfort food like I did before! Depressing!

              I had "aunt flo" visit during induction AND I had sinus infection. Remember you retain about 5 pounds of water weight for the week before your period and it slowly releases after your period is gone. PLUS you body often goes into a sort of strvation moed when you are sick. So don't be discouraged at all. During my period and sinus infection I lost NOTHING for over a week in induction. But after it was over, I dropped 3 pounds in 3 days, so your body does it's thing, just stick with it and you will be fine!

                Thank you SO much! I feel so bloated, and just can't understand why.. I drink (AND "expel") A LOT and avoid salted stuff wherever possible..but that with the "starvation mode" makes sense. I am trying my best to continue to motivate myself, but it is sure hard.. in the first weeks on WW or other diets I always lost 7-8 pounds like nothing, the hard part came afterwards.. now not even this!

                  Hey Dadi! Don't give up! Your menu is great and since you are sticking to it so diligently you are bound to have a "woosh" moment as they say here on the boards when you wake up one morning and have three or four pounds gone. I also want to mention that because you are already so close to your happy weight, it may not come off as easily for you. Don't let that discourage you. Many of us here have 100 and even 200 pounds to lose. When you see 12 pounds come off of someone like us during induction.... don't think that should also apply to you. You may also be losing inches! Just keep doing what you are doing.... it seems like you have GREAT willpower! Stay with the program and your body will work it out.

                      hmmmm, how odd, funny enough ive been using ketostix 4 times a day, (yes very obbsessive) but you get so many in a pack, and i like piddling on them and trying to make it bounce up and down like a diving board.

                      but when i did a stick on day 1, it was quite dark pink, not quite purple, think it was middle of scale, then the next day it got lighter and so on, sometimes its white but always a small spec of pink somewhere.

                      i think it can change, as reguards to weight loss and exercise, im doing a lot of exercise and even push and sit ups, swimming running walking, all adds to about 1.7 hours per day and im still losing 1 lb per day, but ive only just started, so maybe the people are right, you might be adjusting, but if i was you (and wouldnt listen to much to me cause im a noob) id exercise more eat less cheese stick to plain fish and plain meat with very small veg, if you want you are welcome to check the blog we just started.

                      but you are more experianced than me at this game

                        Wow thanks everyone! i Didnt think i would have so many replys lol.
                        I think.. i might of gotten back on track.... I cant 100% say yet, because there was a couple of times that my weight got under 89 into the 88's but then the next day id be back up over 89.. It drives me crazy!

                        But this is what i did, And i wouldnt recommend ANYONE, to do this daily.

                        I quit the mince & veggies mix..i really think they might of had 2 many veggie carbs. (its a shame cause i loved it!) , i stuck to eating plain meats, and veggies.. First day, worked out more then i ate.. plus extra.. i dont think this is safe to do.. Cause your body burns 1200 a day on its own right??( i wouldnt do this every day.. maybe once a month) i probly only ate around 1200,, i burned 1255 on the treadmill, then i did crunches and jumped on my trampoline ( these were new excersizes i had added.. so this might of helped 2)I felt Fine all day.. But mainly just stayed around the house watching tv, working on my websites... the next day, i slept till lunch time..Found that holding my arms in the air, actually kinda hurt.. Burned off another 600 cals on the treadmill.. same thing today and i will keep it at that.. ( going to do weights tomorrow, and swim the next day) I went down from 90.4 back to 88.7 .. Like i said though.. def waiting to see if the scale moves down tomorrow and hoping to god it doesnt go up!

                        So i was thinking, The extra working out i did, burning all my calories that day... Could that of kinda kick started the fat burning again??

                        The reason i count calories is because i read so much about going into starvation mode & was worried that i did this, i never feel hungry.. & i dont think i eat enough, Im trying to find some high calorie foods for Atkins that wont cost a fortune to live on weekly with my mum.. As i have made her aware that we need to atleast stick over 1200 a day. I also only burn 600cals a day, Because of this..

                        I have been losing inches.. Kinda.. Half an inch in a week, But thats half an inch from 3 parts of my stomach, and my calf..so thats a few inches all added up.. So i am happy with that.. Kinda.. I was wondering how many inches other people lose weekly. And i am patiantly waiting for next week to come so i can see if i lose another half an inch lol..

                        I had myself so worried about being in starvation mode.... Because the first time i did atkins i had so much success. And for the first month.. Great success as well! .. I Do think you might be right though, My body is testing me... & rearranging.. Hopefully! Its just fustrating when you work so hard.. and no reward.. lol


                        Anyways, i did alot of researching last night.. On people being in Ketosis and not losing.. I actually found its quite common for alot of people.. and some have it so much worse then me.. I read about one girl stalling for two months, from the start of induction..Then overnight, she lost 10lbs! then the week after, another 6lbs.
                        Am i allowed to post a link here to another forum (a topic) ??? There was just this one topic that i think will help everyone who is stalling have more faith that eventually they will start losing again.. It Really helped me & gave some other ideas of what to look at as well.

                        Oh, & just one more question... I read online somewhere, about having to eat enough calories to keep your body running (1200) PLUS the calories you burn daily... is this true?

                        P.S & yes i stalled on my tom last month... 1 & a half weeks of holding water. *sigh* Unfortunately all i lost when it was over, Was back to what i was before the tom.

                          Good stuff, i dont disagree with you.. I actually have this feeling that i gain weight from eating recipes, my body seems to respond alittle more to eating just plain boring meat & Veggies. I wont even eat cream cause i am convinced it will do bad for me.... Should see me at meal times... I can barely stomach the meat im eating.. Fish No problems.. Red meat.. Yuk, I really wish i could find something nice to put over my chops.. like a atkins gravy.. hmm

                          Congratulations on the weight loss, hopefully it keeps on coming. When i did atkins the first time, i had alot of success daily, So hopefully your heading in that same direction
