  • Induction menu nutrient breakdown

I used the menu on page 133. I assumed 3 oz of butter for cooking, and estimated veggie servings. I didn't add any dressings, that would have brought the fat up from 61 percent. I made the cream 2 oz.

Here is the nutrient breakdown for this day from Sparkpeople.

    NUTRIENTS: GOAL / TODAY
    Calories: 1250 - 1600 /1,731
    Fat: 28 - 62 /120
    Carbohydrates: 141 - 260 /35
    Protein: 31 - 140/ 132
    Calcium, Ca: 100 - 150 /56
    Fiber, total dietary: 25 - 35 /14
    Iron, Fe: 100 - 150 /83
    Magnesium, Mg: 100 - 125 /60
    Selenium, Se: 100 - 200/ 290
    Vitamin E: 100 - 200/ 32
    Vitamin D: 100 - 150 /30
    Vitamin C: 100 - 500 /146
    Vitamin B-12: 100 - 200 / 253
    Vitamin A, IU: 100 - 110/ 466
    Riboflavin: 100 - 200 / 106

As you can see, nutient wise Atkins is quite adequate in some things, even vitamin C, while deficient in others for this day, like E and D. I thought of checking this while thinking about the post about the heavy 16 year old. Based on this, if my teen were thinking of doing Atkins I would be comfortable with this menu PLUS some yogurt and milk for D and calcium. Some nuts too. But I would not feel there was any nutritional risk at all, this is so much better than the average teen menu would play out! The average teen is going to have a higher metabolism, so a decent CCLL, so would not need to be as strict as an adult in order to lose.

Anyway, thought it would be interesting!

    Re: Induction menu nutrient breakdown

The Atkins Center had a diet they used specifically for children and teens. That diet is in a book called Feed Your Kids Well by Dr. Fred Pesacatore, who was the associate medical director of the Atkins Center during the 1990s. My guess is the reason why Atkins Nutritionals doesn't mention this book or has even developed an Atkins for teens diet is because Pescatore still has the copyright on the book. Also, he's been a critic of Atkins Nutritionals because the direction they are taking is vastly different than what Dr. Atkins envisioned.

I would use the diet in Pescatore's book if I had a teenager, just because it was nutritionally balanced enough for the Atkins Center to have used on their teenaged patients. And I would also have that teenager be monitored closely by their own physician during their weight loss, too.
