  • let us talk lettuce

Okay, so my whole trying to lose weight life I've heard "Stay away from Iceburg...it's so hard on your stomach, it's nutritional value isn't there...blah blah blah."

So I've been eating romain lettuce......but one cup is equal to 1.7 ounces and that equals out to 1.5 total carbs but only .5 net carbs.....

Now iceburg lettuce one cup is 1.9 ounces, just a bit more than the romain but the total carbs is 1.6 with the net carbs being .9 almost double the romain.

So my question is I'm finding it hard to eat SOOOOO much lettuce, but I want the vitamins. What do you all use for lettuce? I think I'm going to try mixing the two to see how that is...but gosh golly. LOL

    Thanks all!

    Re: let us talk lettuce

I eat green leaf lettuce. There are ways of incorporating it into other things, like a sandwich, a turkey/cheese roll up, eat it with tuna or chicken sallad in it. Use it as a taco shell. When I enter mine on the fitday thing I choose the outer or inner leaf in the quantity that I have. The other night I had 3 outer leaves and it ended up being a HUGE salad, which was very filling.

Good luck. And I don't think you HAVE to eat so much lettuce. Just have some other veggies that are allowed. I do not have lettuce every day, I would go nuts!

There are about 20 vegetables on the "salad" list for Induction. Lettuce is only one of them.

During Induction, I ate lettuce but I made sure it wasn't more than 1/4 to 1/2 the veggies I ate because as your wrote, lettuce has hardly any nutrients to speak of. And if you want those nutrients, you'd have to eat a mountain of the stuff. Better to eat the other "salad" vegetables in combination with the "other" list vegetables.

I very seldom have a salad anymore. So many more things you can do with veggies.

one salad I have every day is Greek salad == tomatoes, cucumbers, red onion, olive oil, and feta cheese, then I have a ceasar salad with dressing, along with a different choice of protien.

Unfortunately, when people hear the word "salad" they automatically think of lettuce. I have salads made of cooked and/or raw veggies lightly dressed with olive oil and lemon juice. One of my favorite salads is a combo of sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, cooked green beans (at room temperature) and hard boiled eggs.

Yummm that greek salad sound yummy! I do eat other veggies durning the day...I eat tomatoes and cucumber and mushrooms and scallions on the good veggie list...and on the "other" veggie list I tyically eat cauliflower but I've also had asparagus and I' have artichokes and artichoke hearts on my shopping list for today.

I think I'm going to add bell peppers to my list too because you get alog of carbs out of the yellow bell pepper too so... =)

Thanks for your ideas and tips...keep them comin =)

Iceberg lettuce is just so .... dreary. Blah. Bland. I stick with romaine or green leaf; at least they have some nutrients! Anyway, I always sex up my salad with some tomato, a bit of onion, and a light sprinkle of feta cheese (since a little goes a long way) ... drizzle with an olive oil-based dressing and I'm a happy chomper I also eat a lot of broccoli.

I only eat baby spinach leaves. They are so yummy! Plus they are super good for you! They have a ton of nutrients and their fiber content is higher than other salad leaves. I eat 3-5 cups of loose packed baby spinach/day.

                          Re: let us talk lettuce

I buy the pre-washed organic baby lettuce mixes from Trader Joe's here in L.A. They have a better nutritional profile and I hate washing salad greens. A 142 gram (5 oz) bag is enough for meal-sized helpings of greens for my BF and I, and it costs $1.89. Bargain, in my book. Oh, and in a 76 gram serving, it's only like 1 effective crab, 'cause the fiber is pretty good with those darker, leafier greens.

I've never shopped at Trader Joes, but I've heard great things about them. I was told (along time ago) that they sell (or sold) no carb chocolate or something like that, lol. Anyhow, I think I'm going to hit up a Trader Joe's next week or so (when ever I run out of greens). Thanks Bastet!
