  • question on fruit/calories

If I'm on extended induction will I mess myself up if I eat 1/2 medium apple everyother day? it's 9 grams of carbs with 1 gram fiber. I eat it with a peice of cheese. On the days I eat the half apple I limit my salad veggies to one cup spinach with 1 tbs blue cheese. the only other carbs I get are incidenal from the eggs or the chicken/pork/beef. I have no sugar cravings whatsoever. I'm still having trouble eating more than 1000-1100 calories per day. I try to make myself eat more but end up feeling sick. I have taken a break from intensely working out because although I technically haven't lost much in the way of puonds in the past month, I've dropped pants sizes. It does feel good to go from a size 22 to a size 18 pants. I have 20 more pounds to go till I meet my halfway goal of 50 pounds and switch to owl levels for the remaining (hopefully) 50 pounds. I'm still working out but just not as intensely...

First, way to go on losing the pants sizes - I am SO looking forward to the day! Congrats!

If you're on induction - apple is not allowed.

Why do you need to eat it versus something else? There are plenty of ways to get calories from "legal" sources.

Are you getting bored with your food choices? Then I'd move into OWL if I were you.

Yeah I guess I am gettign bored with my food choices.. except for the bacon and eggs... don't think I could ever get bored with them... Maybe I should think of moving up to owl... I'm kinda scared to do that cuz I'm afraid of going nutzo on the carbs as I add them in.. keeping it under 20 has been pretty easy but am terrified of going bonkers when adding more carbs in... Eventhough I've been eating the 1/2 apple every 2-3 days i've been staying in ketosis (although i do notice it is a lighter shade of purple -more pinkish the day after I eat the 1/2 apple)

I would second the suggestion of moving to OWL - also maybe try to vary your veg to allow more crnchy ones like celery, radishes, raw sweet peppers, jicama etc if that texture is missing from your menus.

Apples are relatively high on the GI, so you would do better leaving them till you are at the higher rungs of OWL.

As to whether you would go wild while adding more carbs, as you have been managing to limit yourself to 1/2 an apple I don't see why you should have problems with adding limited amounts of the OWL rung foods.

You have already proved you can restrict quantities with the apple, so I am sure the other foods need not be a problem

Start adding more rung one veggies and experiment with the crunchier ones
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

i don't usually poke my nose in this forum too often but let me add this. you might want to try a chayote squash. it is very similar to an apple if you bake it up with some cinnamon and a bit of splenda or other sweetner. you can search the board for info and recipes.

I was a little bit afraid of OWL but I took the plunge and I'm only on rung 1 (stupid TOM is interfering with my ability to understand whether or not I can move up or not yet), but I'm glad I did it. By now induction-only would have been a drag and boring as all get-out - I have more options than I did (eating more tomatoes, for example, when I wouldn't on Induction because it was too easy to go over with just a small amount).

Really, the extra carbs don't seem to be causing me any trouble at all - and after all, that's the point of this, learning how many carbs you, personally can consume and which combinations. That's how you'll adopt this as a way of eating - a way of life - rather than a diet.

You can't live on Induction forever - if you try, you'll fail, like so many people do (I'm sure there's LOTS of people here who can tell you that happens).

I was talked into moving on to OWL and I'm so glad I listened!
I am loving yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, berries! I will stay here for quite a while before moving to the other fruits or grains rungs. (I'll skip the alcohol rung)

I really do think you will be more satisfied if you move on.

              Good luck!
I don't miss apples so much but I'd love a banana!

                Re: question on fruit/calories

Thanks for the reminder, I have a chayote in the fridge. I don't bake it, I skillet fry in butter and then add splenda and cinnamon. Today I might try the vanilla flavored stevia, cinnamon and a dash of cream.

OWL rocks. It really does. And chayote is pretty darn good. (Also good in soups.)

What the heck is a chayote? LOL I've never heard of it.

Off to google this yummy sounding thing!

You will find it if your markets carry 'Hispanic' type foods. It is just a really low carb green squash. It is actually pretty plain until you add seasonings. I guess that is why it works for both sweet and savory uses. Hope you find one!
