When Dr. Atkins wrote the first book (with another writer), all he had to go on was what he had read from historical low carb diets (Banting, et al) and the results of his losing 30 odd pounds following a really low carb diet.
He spent the first years fighting doing any research--all he knew was that it worked--and that's all he wanted to know.
His later books were after he treated more than 25,000 patients and indeed did research. He also changed his mind after being on the diet for so many years, and it stopped working for him. He made changes after that. That's when he knew he had to exercise, even though he hated it.
