Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

BOONIE! This article was awesome, thank you so much!

I was getting a little depressed at the idea of never touching a sweet again but this explained so much and made sense. I'm sticking to the no-more-than-two-serves of sweetener a day for this round of Induction and then see what happens to my sweet tooth afterwards - sloooooowly.

I feel much better today, I feel like I'm back in ketosis and am convinced it was the hidden sugar I found and tossed. YAY.

Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

On retroflection, last night I felt sort of paranoid, about the sugar alcohols, but better to be safe than sorry!

The way feel about it, If nothing else, eating the 1st bite of a bar like I got would have a decent chance of causing my willpower to cave for the second bite, which along with further rationalizing that "it's safe", would eventually be followed by the rest of the big bar. Then, with all those non-counted, blood sugar-affecting carbs in my system, I'd be risking full blown cravings, the likes of which have done me in time and time again. NOT THIS TIME! (I hope - still pondering having a taste, then freezing remainer, cut up for future special occasions). Still, paranoid vs just a little bit, & it's really not going to hurt...

Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

Actually, I've lost almost a kilo in the two days that I threw away that food with the hidden sugar (molasses in caesar salad dressing???Honestly!) and stopped the no-carb sweeties.

I am still having the low joule jelley with double cream BUT that plus my morning stevia in my decaff means I am under the three serves of sweetener a day and I honestly have to say I don't miss 'em....I'm hoping if I can stick to this long enough, I'll find having just the one treat a day will be more than enough.

I'm trying very hard to acknowledge that food is fuel and NOTHING MORE THAN THAT. It doesn't love me, it isn't interested in how I am feeling and it's purpose has nothing to do with any comfort I may need. Basta cosi!

Oooh, also I found this Dijonnaise with no sugar of any sort and have filled a squeezy bottle with half this and have Udo's Oil, added some fresh chopped dill and mixed it up - WOW, what a fabulous salad dressing! And GOOOD fats! Awesome with tuna...

Sounds yummy! It probably would not taste as good sweetened anyway!

I have been doing the induction phase for three days now. I bought some test strips to check for ketosis and none were detected. I have also gained two pounds. I am not going over 20 carbs a day wither

Welcome to ADBB, deployment777 - I see this is your first post. Why not introduce yourself inthe spotlight thread?

Alas - you may or may not be really "doing the induction phase" properly; it would be helpful to list your menu for review if you believe something is causing a problem. Also, you should bear in mind that scales will fluctuate somewhat for reasons other than the amount of fat sitting on them. It is good to measure and weigh when you start induction, then again after 2 weeks on it. When you weigh, it should be the same scales, same time of day etc (ie., morning, before dressing, eating or drinking).
That 2 pounds should not be assumed to be a weight gain - I can "gain" 2 just eating a bowl of chicken soup and drinking a big glass of water. LOL

Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

I lost 100lbs in 2004 after having my daughter and then gained some back after the second. The pregnancy seriously awakened my Hashimoto's and last year I had a total thyroidectomy and have had a terrible time losing and staying on track. I am starting Induction this week and hope all goes well, I notice I crave carbs way more now.
It is tuff, hang in there. Follow induction to the T.

Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

I have to say, there is no way around doing Induction to the letter if you really want to lose weight.

I am IR and the slightest cheat will knock me right off course. I had to do this a few times and then come back and commit to doing this EXACTLY as intended to realise this is the way it works and the way it is.

The marvelous thing is that if you can hang in there, you recover the function of your tastebuds and your food suddenly starts to taste sooo good without that sugar overhang which can dull everything.

I never appreciated herbs until my 'buds got clean....

This is crazy. Yes, I've had the odd indiscretion but hardly any kind of blow-out (a few no-carb sweets, a gin and diet tonic, coconut milk in my jelly which actually has only trace carbs in it according to the label!!!!) and after each slip, I've got right back on it.

I'm tracking everything on fitday to the damn letter - I am eating exactly the right number of calories according to my BMR to LOSE weight. I am drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, I am getting my 12-15grams of veg carbs, I am eating around 65-75% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs everyday so WHAT GIVES?

Am I THAT resistant?? Mr doctor didn't tell me how resistant I was, just that I am Insulin Resistant. I don't suffer anywhere near the same symptoms as other PCOS women, my periods are regular, I am on the Yasmin contraceptive and the only other meds I am on is the Diabex (500 a day) that the doctor ordered for the IR.....

                        Singadiva, seriously depressed
The "odd indiscretion" cannot be done along with Atkins. If you eat all the extra calories, fat and protein allowed by eating low carb, and then eat carbs, you will gain, even if you are not very resistant. Since you ARE insulin resistant, you have to first do a clean induction, zero indiscretions, before you can judge what is going on with your body. Messing up your results does not require a carb blow-out. You can't have it both ways: either eat low carb or low calorie/low fat, not both at the same time.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Re: Induction / Ketosis - Help!!

                          Thanks SunnySmile,

Yes, very true, and I've been eating 'clean' for the last four days, am in ketosis and losing again. I've thrown out stuff that isn't on the list, kept to just two sweetener serves a day (one of Stevia) and my craving are going which is a relief.

I've actually NEVER eaten low-fat. I've also never calorie counted before. I am very aware Atkins is NOT a calories in/out system but the reason I am watching calories at the moment is an Atkins-friendly doctor suggested I might have been undereating at the start. I was and didn't realise!

She showed me how to calculate my own BMR and then the optimum number of calories I needed to be eating to lose weight.

Now that I am eating clean, I still struggle to get the calories up but I am much more consistent and can see where/how to add calories in. This has helped me plan my meals and choose better foods.

                          Cheers,

                          Diva

An Atkins-friendly doctor is worth his/her weight in gold! I have an Atkins-friendly doctor and even better, his wife is his nurse and she is really pro-Atkins.

Your appetite will come back some after your body gets used to ketosis. Now that you are eating clean, you'll do great!
