if i'm in ketosis, i should be losing weight...right?

  • if i'm in ketosis, i should be losing weight...right?

    hi all...great forum! i am on day 9 of induction with no cheats. i have been in ketosis since about day 3. (i know the symptoms bc i have done atkins before.) i have 35-40lb to lose which i know is relatively little so i prob won't lose a whole lot on induction, but i haven't lost ANYthing. (i have been measuring myself too.) i've done some searching around on the boards and now am wondering if i'm getting to MUCH protein?

    typical day:
    3-4 eggs scrambled in butter w/2oz cheddar and 1/2 cup red peppers (i took out the cheese but it made no difference)

    a few hamburger patties (size of fist but flatter)

    for dinner i'll have steak ums (100% pure beef) which according to the servings i'm having is about 64g of protein right there, or some chicken legs baked in butter, or a couple tilapia filets cooked w/olive oil and onions, and also 1/2 cup cucumber slices

    i have a couple set snack times with cuc, brocolli or peppers during the day to get all my veggies.

    i am very physically active for hrs every day-work on a farm and ride horses-and drink a TON of water as a result, so that's taken care of. day before yesterday i started taking a serving of metamucil. it's the sugar free kind, but it's flavored so has the fake sugar in it. the store didn't have any real AND fake sugar free kind.

    so what do you all think? should i just be patient and stay in induction until i start to see results? thanks in advance

    ETA: in fitday, it says 3 eggs=4 carbs. is this true? if so do you have to count eggs against your 20 carbs a day? bc for a cup of brocolli, peppers and cucumbers, the total is already almost 20 carbs...

    Your introduction says you are i am 26yo, 5'4, 175 lbs and if my German is not totally forgotten Reiterin indicates a female, right?
    I think what I would do is to log the food into fitday and see how much protein and calories you are eating. There is a possibility you are getting too much so check it.
    Not everyone will experience those big drops right away so it would hang in there. And your body is probably changing with all the exercise you have introduced. I think it will happen.

      Hang in there and keep logging every morsel that goes into your mouth!!

      9 days isn't enough to gauge your failure or success!

      Also, don't gauge by lbs or inches lost.............

      Ask yourself...............

      Do you feel better?
      Do you have more energy?
      Do you have more mental clarity?
      How are you moods?
      Are you craving sweets?

      If you answer those in a postive light, then there is 5 benefits of low carb already..................the weight loss WHEN it finally comes is AN ADDED BONUS!!!!!

        Being in ketosis is no guarantee of weight loss. While it is true that you can eat more calories and still lose while doing Atkins, if you eat way more than necessary for your body size and activity, you will not lose and worse, might gain.

        Atkins has never been an "all you CAN eat" diet. It's all you NEED to eat to be satisfied, but not stuffed.

        Your menu sounds heavy on protein and calories and weak in fat. Excess protein will be converted to glucose. What do a "few hamburger patties" mean? Do you really need to eat four scrambled eggs with butter and cheese to feel satisfied?

        Extra fat will fill you up and stay with you longer. It will also help prevent a sugar spike, so when you are snacking on veggies, be sure to eat some fat with it. Cream cheese, sour cream and mayo come to mind. With those three items, you can make some tasty dips or spreads for your veggies.

          With all your exercise, water and veggies, you shouldn't be having problems with constipation, but the fact that you are taking Metamucil implies that you are having constipation problems. That in itself could be the reason you are not showing a loss on the scale.

          I keep myself regular by taking magnesium oxide before bed and extra vitamin C. If you still have problems, take a stool softener, not a laxative, until you are cleaned out. Compacted stool weighs a lot.

          Keep up the water drinking. With your active lifestyle and Atkins being a diuretic, you need way more water than usual.

            I agree with Sunny, you need to start tracking your foods in Fitday, or the daily plate to get your ratios of fat/carbs/proteins etc. As Sunny mentioned though you can eat more calories, a calorie is still a calorie.

            someone once made this example of ketosis on the board and I thought it was a really good example: If you did nothing but eat butter all day every day (literally), you'd be in extremely deep ketosis. But would you lose weight? No. Not only would you not lose, you'd most likely gain. Despite being in very deep ketosis.

            There are far more factors to weightloss on this woe than ketosis alone. You must also get in your veggies (which will up your fibre btw), your fats, your proteins. When done properly, ususally it works out to 65% Fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs.

            Eat your allotted amounts of veggies, your protein and fat amounts, and ONLY until you are satisfied. It will work when done properly. don't spend too much time worrying about the colour on the ketostix, and worry more about getting in your veggies and eating until you are satisified.

              that you all so so so much for the replies!! you made me feel much better! i will start using fitday and watch for the 65, 30, 5% ratios mentioned, thank you for those. also, my activity level hasn't changed in about 10 years (always been super high), so i don't think it's that. school starts up again on monday so i'll be back at the gym with my personal trainer 2x a week, so hopefully that will help.

              one question about mayo: i have some "kraft real mayo" whose very first ingredient is soybean oil. is that ok? or should i look for some that is just eggs and vinegar?

                Hi DBR - I use Kraft Real Mayo without any problems. Another option is Hellmans.

                  If you are in the South, Duke's is the only mayo without sugar. If not, then Kraft and Hellman's will have to do.

                    so i used fitday and now i'm all freaked out...

                      Eggs have carbs but less that one each. Did you enter it as raw eggs? That is the way to go. If you enter is as prepared fitday sometimes assumes you added milk to it. But eggs have carbs. Also remember that you take away fiber and that you look at the net carbs. On fitday you have to do the math yourself. Look at your carb number (it may be 22) look at your fiber number (it may be 7). that means your net carbs are 15.

                        that's 65% fat and 30% protein, not the other way around

                          i'm sorry, are you saying it's actually supposed to be 60% FAT, not protein, in your diet? if so i am screwed. O_o i'm like the exact opposite according to fitday...

                            Yep, it's 65% fat. Atkins is high fat, not high protein. Excess protein can be converted to glucose. Your protein will stay at 30%, while as your carbs increase, your fat decreases. Fat is what gets you into deep ketosis and kills the cravings.
