Hey don't give up so easily on not being able to work out! There are a lot of exercises you can do that won't require you to exert your leg. For cardio you can do punches or those machines (i don't know the name) but they are like a bicycle for your arms. You can also do some weights with your arms and upper body, crunches, etc. Anything to burn some calories and build up muscle will help burn more fat

You can extend induction (you should refer to the experts on this) but I think most have more success once they begin to add back more carbs and veggies and work their way up the rungs. Best of luck!
I would rather struggle to do this, than struggle with the fact that I can't...

Could you swim? Most YMCAs have pools...that may even help your leg heal more quickly! Hang in there!

how do those parapalegic olympic athletes manage to do it? I'd say there has to be some way to work out with a hurt leg, perhaps google some exercises custom to your situation.

I don't think there is any particular time we have to weigh, but if you choose one time of day and stick to it you will probably get the best idea of how your weight is changing. I find that my weight in the evenings is usually a frew pounds higher than in the morning, so thew morning is when I usually weigh.

For induction there is no need to weigh every day - just before you start and after 14 days so you can use the chart in DANDR to find out what your likely metabolic resistance to weightloss is.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Re: i need to lose 60+lbs

Hi, Im an Atkins dieter from way back (first time started in 9 using the first book obviously. You can stay in ketosis/lypolisys for as long as you want in theory since you cannot excercise. I sometimes will stay in k/l for several weeks because I like how I feel. 5 days is not long enough for you to be able to gauge how your wieght loss will progress. In his first book he barely mentions exercise and people were still having great success. It was only after all the criticism he got did he start pushing the excersise thing but the bottom line didnt change just becuase he added it to the last edition. You WILL loose it without excersise justnot as quickly.

Re: i need to lose 60+lbs

I agree you will lose weight without exercising, but from many examples across the board you will probably lose more fat by exercising as well!

I was intrigued when you mentioned Dr Atkins first book not mentioning exercise so got out my copy of Dr Atkins Diet Revolution, printed in 1972.
In the chapter called "Why 1 dieter in 10 gets stuck temporarily" he says
I find a dieter who goes astray is almost always helped by undertaking a regular exercise or games program of some kind.
Join a gym class. Play tennis, golf, handball, badminton. Take up bicycling, hiking, horseback riding, jogging, swimming, rowing, skiing, dancing, yoga, judo, karate, fencing.
                etc
Another thing that I feel is important to bear in mind is that his first book was written mainly from his own experience with his own body, but when he wrote his second book Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution it was after 30 years of supervising patients at his clinic and so he rewrote much of his advice to make it more easy to follow and more likely to be successful.
And so he included Chapter 22: "Exercise: It's Non-Negotiable" which starts with these words
Calling all couch potatoes: If you're not getting regular exercise, you aren't following the Atkins Nutritional Approach. It's that simple. You must make a commitment to physical activity as well as change the way you eat-and take nutritional supplements. Doing one without the other is like riding a bike with flat tires. It's a lot more difficult.
and goes on to explain his reasons for saying this.

I did NOT say that he did not mention excercise I said he barely mentions it. Its a matter of semantics.

I don't think anyone is trying to be rude...although when typed, it's often difficult to discern one's tone. There are often spirited debates here...but I've found that they are always well-intentioned. Also, some of the members have essentially memorized all of Atkin's works (overachievers...lol) and aren't afraid to 'set the record straight' for those of us who are still studying. Good luck with your recuperation!

nope A bit like being pregnant - you either are or are not registering ketones in your urine, the level/colour doesn't really matter.

As long as you are eating a balanced Atkins diet and taking the required supplements/vitamins so you get all your body needs you can safely remain in ketosis for a long time. Eating off-plan will probably kick you out of ketosis (depending on how much you ate and of what) and it might take a few days to get back.
