  • Book ?

I am using a book titled Calories and Carbohydrates by Barbara Kraus copyright 1987. The book lists measure/quantity calories and carbohydrates (grams).

The book lists an onion as: 1/2 cup chopped (3 oz)- 33 calories and 7.5 carbs.

I do not think this is net carbs. How do I figure out the net carb value of foods?

Anohter example is garlic 1 whole raw (2 oz) calories =68 , carbs =15.4

I do not eat an entire head of garlic in a day, but I could eat an entire onion.
I use onion in my egg omelet, onion in my salads and in vegetable mixes.

    Any advice??
    Thanks

You can log your food into something like Dailyplate or Fitday. You will see the total carbs and the fiber content there, and you just do the math to get the net carbs.

Careful about the onion. If you are in induction, you should be eating only 3 cups of veggies -- 2 from the salad veggies list and 1 from the "other veggies" list OR 3 from the salad veggies list. Onion is on the "other veggies" list, because it is higher in carbs.

        Re: Book ?

I tried induction last month and didn't lose hardly any weight. It was because I was eating onions and garlic in everything. It never occured to me that they were high in carbs. So this time around I cut out the onions and garlic completely and I've been steadily losing about a pound a day.

I also use a lot of garlic and onion in many of my meals. Thanks for the input. I will cut back on the adding those to my meals.

Carbs - fiber = net carbs

            Onion chopped, raw 1/2 cup
            6.9 g Carbs - 1.4 g Fiber = 5.5 g Net Carb

            Garlic cloves, 1
            1.0 g Carbs - 0.1 g Fiber = 0.9 g Net Carb
