  • Low Blood Sugar

I've been doing Atkins since January 7 but I've hit a roadblock and I'm very concerned. About a week ago I started feeling like my blood sugar was low. I was actually out somewhere when I started shaking all over and had to sit down. The girl with me gave me some apple juice and that seemed to solve the problem. Since then I've continued to have low blood sugar and have been living on apple juice. I just switched to orange juice because I heard it's better for low blood sugar. I made an appointment with my doctor to see what's going on. Anyway I'm concerned about diabetes, hypoglycemia and perhaps it's because I was doing Atkins taht this started. Has anybody had this happen to them before? If I can't do Atkins I don't know how I'm going to get the weight off. Help!

    Re: Low Blood Sugar

Missy, I found my worst days in the beginning were those when I was not eating enough vegetables. You really must have those veggie carbs.

I found that eating the 1/2 c. of pumpkin that we are allowed on induction would immediately put an end to those symptoms of weakness.

I'm guessing that you are not eating enough or are not eating enough vegetables. Could you post a daily menu so we can get an idea of what you are eating?

Also, if you have been drinking apple and orange juice, you are not on Atkins, and another induction would be necessary to get you restarted.

Have you read the book... and checked out the FAQ's. You really can't do Atkins without that knowledge. It's a tried and true method that works, but you must follow the guidelines.

Have you read the book? I can't see how you can have low blood sugar unless you are eating sugar if you see what I mean. It is eating sugar or foods high in sugar that cause you to get low blood sugar as a result. Dr. Atkins explains it all in the book. It is an eye opener.

I agree with Sunny One, you really do need to be eating those veggies and balancing the carbs in the veggies with a decent amount of fat. I have suffered hypoglycemia all my life and the only thing that has cured it has been the low carb lifestyle--try eating a half an avocado, or some cream cheese along with your veggies, add a boiled egg, etc. it will work. Oh, and make sure you keep your water level up as well. It should dissipate.

I've been doing atkins now for 5 years and am in maintenance. I went back to induction in January for a few weeks in order to drop a couple of holiday pounds...about 3 weeks in I had a blood sugar episode (first time in my life) as well..started shaking uncontrollably and thought i was going to faint. 1/2 a cup of applejuice was my choice as well and it helped instantly...

I do not eat sugar, and was doing proper induction along with my veggies by the book. Luckly it only happened to me once, and hasn't happened since. I'm still going to see my dr. and have bloodwork just to be sure.

I'd recommend definately seeing your Dr. to ensure there is nothing medically wrong.

Yes I have the book and have done Atkins successfully in the past. It's the only WOE that has ever worked for me. I know I'm not on it if I'm drinking fruit juice and I need to do another induction but I can't do it if I'm trembling or fainting. I'll see what hte dr. says and start another induction next week.

            Thanks for the help!

                Re: Low Blood Sugar

I have had low blood sugar for most of my life. For years I have had full blood work done every 90 days for another health problem. My blood sugar was always in the 60's and the highest it ever was was 72 once, right before I started Atkins.

Since I have been doing Atkins correctly, my blood sugar is measuring a healthy 82 and once it was 91. I never have low blood sugar episodes any more.

It sounds as though you need to take induction a little slowly. Maybe eat more meals per day and eat more veggie carbs. After you check with your doctor, that is.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Missyclap, that is serious if you were doing Atkins properly.

                      Re: Low Blood Sugar

Do let us know how things are. I am very interested as I too have had similar symptoms ( shaking, feeling faint) I never for one moment thought that it could be low blood sugar as I am careful what I eat. However, over the early part of the year I fell off of the wagon big time so maybe my body is trying to stabilize. Best of luck Missy and thank you for drawing attention to this.

                          Re: Low Blood Sugar

Well I did a bunch of blood tests and everything was normal but the dr. recommended more complex carbs. I'm pairing the veggies with the protein and it seems to be helping. I wish I'd thought of it, I spent half a week being miserable. Now I can start working out without worrying about passing out!

I am really glad that you saw the doc anyway because now you won't be wondering in the back of your mind if something else was going on. I'm glad you are feeling better.
