    Where to find potassium:
One medium banana packs 450 mg. But potatoes actually top bananas in potassium content: a medium baked potato or 20 French fries have 750 mg. Other good sources include cantaloupe (500 mg per cup), beet greens (650 mg per one-half cup cooked), spinach, winter squash and Swiss chard (all around 450 mg per one-half cup cooked). And don't overlook the common bean. One-half cup of cooked lima beans tips the potassium scale at 475 mg; pinto and black beans dish out 400 mg potassium per half-cup serving.

PLease discuss any potassium supplementation with your doc before you start as too much potassium can and does stop human hearts!

look on your fitday.com reports tab and see if you are lacking in any vits or minerals before you try to cure yourself with electroyltes.
Hi all! :wave Since everyone is concerned about this issue and to be honest, so was I, I asked about this on WEBMD (you can actually get a reply from a physician, which is pretty cool--but it takes a couple of days sometimes) and the Dr. who replied said
"there is no way ever you can get an overdose or too much potassium from a vitamin supplement. The FDA does not allow supplements to have anywhere near the amount needed to be potentially dangerous because of past abuse. The reason there are stern warnings on potassium and certain supplements, is because of people's tendency to abuse them by over-use, i.e. taking more than the recommended dosage on the bottle. To take an amount of potassium that can harm or cause heart issues would to take more than 60 or 70 pills ( a whole bottle) at any given time. Most potassium supplements provide only <2% to 3% of FDA recommended dosage and ample supply of potassium can be gotten from the right fruits and vegetables."
He did say that if you have heart issues, had a stroke, or have leg or back cramps for more than 7 days in a row, it could be a sign of something else and you should see a doctor before taking any supplements or taking them for an extended period of 7 days.

I've taken potassium since the first leg cramp hit me a few weeks into induction...almost a year ago now, and that did the trick for me.
I just checked how much potassium I'm actually taking and it's a whopping grand total of 105 mg...so I'm not worried about any overdosing.

I was thinking of weaning off of it and seeing if I'm fine without it..while we're on the topic of all of this, does anyone have an opinion?

Moochiecat, I've been low-carbing for many years and have not been able to come off of supplementing with potassium. I think you will find that your leg cramps will return, if you go off the supplement. I have actually had to increase my potassium, as I was getting them again, even with my usual supplement of one tablet of 99 mg. I might have been a bit dehydrated. Anyhow, it does not hurt to increase potassium supplementation to 2 of those or even 4 of those. We're supposed to get minimum 2000 mg a day (most of it from food).

Hi Juju! Thanks. :hug By the way DH does the writing and maintaining of the websites and publishing of the online magazines pretty much entirely, with the help of my eldest son occasionally.

By the way they made a mistake by saying that I am from Texas. I'm actually in Canada. I don't mind, though, if folks think I'm from the USA. Most of the people that enjoy my cookbooks are actually Americans. Thank you America!

Lowcarbing4ever......My husband has been having severe leg cramps during the night. I saw your post and immediately went to Walmart and bought the Hyland's that you recommended. He started taking them and had a few really mild cramps the first night and nothing since. He is sending a thousand thank yous and a big hug your way. Thanks for the information.
