  • can someone double check this?

i burned 1592 calories through working out today. that plus what i burn in a day normally is about 3628. today i ate 1866 calories. my total calories burned minus what I ate is 1762. If I continue working out at this rate, does this mean i should burn around 3.5lbs of fat a week if 1lb of fat=3500?

I don't want this to come off like a calorie-obsessed question, I realize it isn't about how many calories you eat. I'm more interested in how beneficial my workout is going to be. I also realize that gaining muscle means that much of a loss won't always show on the scale.

Not really. The calories burned, as displayed by the machines at the gym, are almost always off. The rate at which one burns energy depends on the individual body composition, reactions, force exerted, etc. How much are these numbers off? They can be by 10% or by 70%, there's no way to know unless you get hooked up on a bunch of machines, in a clinical setting.

Congrats for working out though. While you don't really know how many calories you are burning, you will be definitely shrinking and building muscle!

According to fitday and my calories burned vs. calories eaten, I should be losing twice as much weight as I do, and I am conservative on what I give myself for lifestyle and exercise and overestimate calories eaten--just to be safe. So this tells me that these numbers can be way off or my metabolism is really crummy. Either way I don't put too much stock in numbers other than to note when my calorie intake seems to stop all losses.

I just read a study about exercise machines and their purported "calories burned" claims. The machines were off by an 'average' of 40%.

On the other hand, your exercise will burn considerable calories and you will tighten up much faster than if you were doing little to no exercise.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

my machine actually doesn't have a calories burned thingy on it so i have to look it up online. i do underestimate it and put it in as moderate effort even when i'm all red in the face and gross afterward. I need to go invest in a heart rate monitor I suppose if I really wanted to see how much I get out of it. Thanks guys, it did sound a little too good to be true lol. im going to keep doing what i'm doing but I won't be all dissapointed if I don't see a huge loss just because i'm working out a lot more. Patience is not one of my virtues but I can work on it lol

What in the world did you do to burn almost 1600 calories? Did you run a marathon?

Interesting. Did the article say whether the 40% number means the machines read 40% higher than actual? I suspect that's the case, unfortunately. 40% lower readings would be nice.

                  lol. 40% higher, of course.

They were high an average of 40%, with the elliptical being the worst offender for overestimating calories burned.

Very interesting. Thanks for this enlightenment. Who knew... do you recall the stairstepper/Stairmaster results per chance?

i just went online to find out my optimal heart rate for burning fat, and i'm going to try to use that instead of relying on these online sites that say how much you burned. i mean when you really think about it, 787 calories for an hour of 'moderate' effort sounds pretty high doesnt it.
