  • A couple more questions for the sake of reasearch...

First, let me thank everyone who answered my survey questions. I have a few more questions that I need answered in order to complete my paper. 1) Does anyone know where Dr. Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine is located? It was mentioned in the Atkins Diabetic Revolution but no state or town was ever mentioned. 2) The second question I have are of medical nature and I totally understand if you all don't want to answer them but I'm going to ask anyway. Have you ever experienced any of the following while on the Atkins diet: constipation, nausea, headaches, fatigue, or bad breath. 3) Do you know how ketones are formed?

Any information you can give will help. Thanks again and as always your names will remain anonymous in my paper.

In your original thread, you were asked a couple of questions that you never answered. They were:

This is extremely easy information to find... I find it odd that you would ask that type of question here. If this is a research paper, I would think that you would research it. Since the answer to that question is a fact, and not an opinion, shouldn't you verify any answer you got here, anyway?

By the way, the center is located at 152 E. 55th St., New York, NY 10022.

I'm not clear... are you asking whether we know or don't know how ketones are formed.... meaning, are you looking for a yes or no answer here? Or are you looking for an explanation of the facts? If you are looking for facts, I would once again tell you that you should be researching actual facts, and not going by "word of mouth" from people on this board. You want your paper to be accurate, yes?

Whatever answers you get for question #2, the results will be inconclusive. Headaches, nausea, fatigue are all symptoms of the so-called "Induction flu". Some people experience them and some do not, but this also depends on how much fat they are eating, on how much water they are drinking, on what vegetables they are consuming as part of their three daily cups, on pre-existing medical conditions, on how many carbs these folks used to eat before Atkins, on their degree of metabolic resistance, on the nutritional supplements they are taking, etc. Similarly, whether someone will have problems with constipation depends on what vegetables they are eating, on their exercise routine, on the amount of water drank, on the fiber supplements they take, etc. So unless you take into account all these factors, you cannot make a correct analysis of our responses.

Question #3. Oxidation of fatty acids creates acetyl CoA, which is then converted to ketone bodies in the livery mitochondria. If you're interested in the details of this process, you can find them in almost any biochemistry book you have at the library.

I have a bit of an "issue " with question two too. I am sure most people had some those symptoms before starting Atkins too - what do you hope to argue if you know people had headache on Atkins? They may have had regular headaches before Atkins too? The method here is fishy to me. But maybe all these so called "research" studies work like this

Exactly! I gave her/him the benefit of doubt when she/he couldn't spell questionnaire, but I smell a rat, now. What college student required to compose a questionnaire doesn't even notice when it is spelled wrong and continues to spell it wrong in the reply to my correction?

I think we are being had. Who knows where this information will end up?

Question #2 is totally useless. I experienced all of those before Atkins. After induction, all of it resolved and I have none of those problems, now.

I agree Sunny (Sis). I smelled a rat right from the beginning. Hence my question to the OP. By him/her not answering, my concern was comfirmed.
Looks to me like you all are writing a term paper for the OP. He/she didn't have to do much research at all. Started a couple of threads.....term paper is done, LOL.

Re: A couple more questions for the sake of reasearch...

Hey ya'll I'll tell you where you info will be. Univerty of Virgina College of Wise, Abingdon, VA campus . COMM 345: Technical Writting. The question 2# was trying to contrdict Jane Kirby, R.D. "Dieting For Dummies", who listed those symptoms as side effects of the Atkins diet. She also said that ketones are produced from the restriction of carbohydrates which can put a strain on your kidneys I was only wanting to know if you dieter swere aware of the strain it puts on kidneys. AS for 1#, I googled before I did anything. All I got was the web site of some holistic doctor who had taken over Dr. Atkins practice but still did not list an address so, excuse me for asking. Also, I'm writtng two other papers for my other classes and this is paper is just for a class that has nothing to do with my major so I'm a little stressed right now. Thanks for adding to the stress.

Here is the thesis of my paper. (Remember I'm still in rough draft)

In examination of the Atkins Diet, my research will answer the following six questions: (1) Who created the Atkins diet? (2) How does one follow the Atkins diet? (3) What are the health benefits of the Atkins diet? (4) What are the health risks of the Atkins diet? (5) What are the health opinions of the dieters who are on the Atkins diet? (6) What is the medical opinion of the diet?

Heres what happend to your surveys. Its still in a rough draft I wrote this morning so excuse my mess.

As part of my research, I posted a questionnaire about the diet at www.atkinsbulletinboard.com. The following are my findings on the diet based on the information and opinions of actual Atkins dieters:
Of the dieters who viewed my questionnaire only six dieters replied. Of those six dieters who replied, five participated in answering my questionnaire. All of the dieters were over the age of sixty-five with the exception one dieter who did not complete the questionnaire. Of those six dieters only one was male.
Only two of the five dieters questioned said they had a family history of obesity. In an interesting finding, the same two dieters who admitted to family history of obesity also had a family history of diabetes. When asked about a family history of heart disease, only two dieters disclosed to a predisposition to it. Of those dieters who had a family history of heart disease one was male and one was female. In another interesting note, the female who had a family history of heart disease also had a family history of obesity and diabetes.
When asked about how long the dieters had been on the Atkins dieters the numbers ranged from years to months. The short length of time being on the diet was three months and the longest was three years. Surprisingly, four of the five dieters questioned about their energy in the first two weeks of the diet admitted to being fatigued. But after the first two weeks of the diet, all dieters said they were no longer fatigued and had surge in energy.
The amount weight the dieters have lost varies in the first two weeks from 7 to 12 pounds for females and 17 pounds for the only male dieter who answered the questionnaire. All dieters agreed that after the first two weeks of the diet the did not lose a steady number of pounds during the week but did go on to lose significantly more weight than in the first two weeks of the diet. Also, of those dieters I questioned all five have recently had a physical. Four of the dieters said that their physician approved of the diet with the exception of one dieter who has not yet discussed the diet with her physician.
