  • Is it possible that Atkins may not work for some?

    Hi there gang.

I was wondering... is it possible that Induction (followed strictly), may just not work for some people? I have been following the Induction plan since August of 2008. Initially, I lost 5 lbs, but after that, it just stayed there or even went back up to where I was before, and even gained several pounds.

Now, I have been recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disorder (the most common form of hypothyroidism), and they are adjusting the medication accordingly, but could that be enough reason to stop doing Atkins? I fear that if I am not losing with less than 20g carbs a day, then perhaps my body is also not processing the fats properly as the plan would dictate, and I could be actually doing harm to my body.

I have also posted in the Thyroid part of the forum, but I wanted to know if anyone else out there thinks that perhaps this is not the way to go for me at the moment. I want to lose weight, but, much more importantly, I want to do it in a healthy way.

There was a member here a few years ago who was also diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease and she had (and still has) amazing success on Atkins. She is just an example (of many), but there is no reason why Atkins would not work for people with Hashimoto's once the medication is properly adjusted.

Are you eating any goitrogens? How long ago were you diagnosed?

Oh my - that is the first time I have ever seen the word "goitrogens". That sounds terribly unappetizing, so I would say no. It sounds like they taste like lima beans.

Seriously - I have no idea. I will look that up.

A few people on the Atkins for Health/Thyroid forum have been very helpful - actually pivotal in my getting properly diagnosed. Still, I am concerned that there is SOMETHING just not quite right with my body and how it is processing/not processing the food I am eating during Induction. And the medication is most likely the key, but until I get a proper answer medically (I'm working on that), I turn to you all, my gurus in all things Atkins.

Right. So I was asking because some of the foods allowed during Induction are goitrogen foods, so they will mess up with the T4 to T3 conversion. There is a list somewhere on the Board... I'll try to find it and I'll post here if I do.

More important, you should discuss the diet with your doctor and ask for his/her opinion. He/she is the one that can give the best advice and can adjust your treatment accordingly.

I found it, and yup - I have been eating cauliflower almost every day. And when not eating cauliflower, I have been eating broccoli, brussels sprouts and bok choi.

Wow! Thanks for letting me know about this! I had no idea.

Here is a thread that answers your question about Hashimoto's and losing weight:
