  • ketosis please help me

    hi everyone
    I really need some advice regarding ketosis and ive found your site ..feel free to chastise me for probably doing this diet wrong
    ok..i started the diet last week in february and lost 20lbs in the 1st 5 weeks..great..then it just stopped losing weight and i mean completely..
    last week i bought the ketone testing sticks and not once have i had the slightest trace of ketones and ive tested 3 times a day for a week..
    to make matters worse i work 12hrs a day in a pretty physical job then goto the gym doing cardio and weights for 90mins ..EVERY day..
    my diet is clean i think and im under 20g carbs every day...please help,im getting really peed off..heres a few things maybe im doing wrong but i aint sure...
    i dont really drink too much water
    i tend to snack on quite a lot of roasted peanuts
    its mostly meat i eat,,do i need to eat veg?
    i have about 5 coffees a day with splenda and use all my carb intake on the milk..
    any other advice u could give me ,i would be so gratefull

    I hear caffeine can mess up ketosis and raise blood sugar.
    Peanuts have sneaky carbs that add up really quickly.

    I've been antsy about ketosis myself (re-started last Thursday) and have been reading that you'll only pee ketones if you're not using them for fuel. Sounds like with your job and the gym you're using them before peeing them.

    with the knowledge I have I'd say to trade the milk for cream, lose the nuts and make sure you are eating enough fat. Nuts are a no-no for ketosis anyway. They're ok for OWL though. But if you're looking for the induction ketosis, snack on something else =)

      ok ill do what you suggest..food and drink wise
      what u said about me using the ketones before i do the test..it still doesnt explain why i havent lost a single pound in 5 or 6 weeks..especially when im training so hard
      thats the galling bit lol

        lol this will sound dumb and i'm sure you've considered it but maybe you're putting on a lot of muscle? What about measurements? i don't know...
        Or maybe you're just at a plateau...
        I've been there though with atkins... maybe you're not eating enough in general? I was just reading a post about making sure to eat a lot of fat and to eat at least 1500 calories a day and if you work out a lot, to eat enough to make up for the calories you burn because your body won't lose fat when you're "starving".

          lol yeah and im just big boned
          i eat about 2000 calories a day..but normally thats split over 2 meals and then my nuts as a snack..in saying that i dont normally eay until 4 or 5 hours after i get up
          god the frustration

              yeah some doctors are a bit ill-informed
              there probably is some who are clued up on atkins but when i mentioned it he just told me it was a bad diet

                once i asked my doctor about natural thyroid hormone replacement (extracted from pigs) which is something that many many people use and he asked "are you a pig?"
                probably the most ignorant answer i've ever heard.

                about 8 years ago when one of the nurses at my dr's office was feeling the glands in my neck concerning tonsilitis she suggested i get my thyroid tested. I asked the doctor when he came in if he thought i should and he said (without feeling the gland) "i'm sure you're fine"
                i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism finally (after orders from my gyno to be tested) 18 months ago.

                  Are you counting the carbs in the peanuts? They add up fast

                  Yes, 2 cups of salad veggies plus one more cup of either salad veggies or 'other' veggies.

                  Milk is not allowed. Cream is. MAX 3 splenda's per day. Decaf coffee only.

                  Pete - On this site we go strictly by the 2002 edition of 'Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution'. You are not going by the rules outlined in the book. I'm not sure if that's because you haven't read it - or because you are doing some other kind of low-carb diet.

                      Yeah, Julie's advice is spot-on. Also, you seem really receptive to help from others. That's a really good trait! I hope you start losing really soon.

                        Hiya
                        sorry for jumping in.. (and maybe I missed it being mentioned) BUT don't forget how important your water intake is...
                        Water is suppose to flush out those ketones (which can be bad to build up in the liver and kidneys) and also to help the whole process of ketosis ect ect..
                        I try drink about 12 pints a day.. I think some people drink more than that.. not sure
                        Good luck though.. it sounds like you have done amazingly well. Heres hoping your stall doesn't continue much longer.

                          Nuts are also not allowed on Induction.

                          The veggies and water (MINIMUM 64 ounces) are necessary if you you want to get the loss going again. You need both.

                          When the are allowed, peanuts, though low in carbs, are limited to one ounce portions--that is not much. 22 almonds is an ounce. I am guessing 1/3 cup peanuts is roughly an ounce.

                          Also, you are far better off dividing your food into three meals and two snacks and starting with breakfast means you will help stoke your body's metabolism. If you run it on empty in the morning then you tend to slow the metabolism down.

                          If you don't have the 2002 DANDR read the Stickies in the Induction section for further clarification. There is a lot of good information there.

                            One last thing, if you drink coffee tou should drink an additional cup of water for each coffee over and above your 64 ounce minimum. So, if you drink 3 cups of coffee a day, you should be drinking a minimum of around 64 + 24 ounces or 88 ounces of water per day. This is because of coffee's diuretic effect.

                              If you are having trouble with the program you need to re-read the rules and recheck the acceptable food lists - get on program correctly -- in order for the plan to work you have to follow it as written. After this much time on the plan what rung are you up to now?

                              Food -- make sure you are only eating foods on the acceptable food list
                              Water -- MANDATORY 64 ounce MINIMUM per day (I drink 150 oz minimum daily)
                              Exercise -- MANDATORY - it sounds like you have the exercise part down but the rest of the plan you aren't doing properly. What rung of the plan are you on now?

                              Are you using Fitday or some other program to track your food intake daily? deducting fiber and only counting net carbs daily? The 2002 edition of DANDR is available inexpensively on Amazon - mine, with shipping included, was under $10.00. That's a small price to pay for a life changing program.

                              There is something called PISS (Post Induction Stall Syndrome) but if you haven't been following the program correctly I wouldn't think this is what you are experiencing. Are you sure the keotsis sticks are still good or are they out of date.
                              You should test once a day at the same time -- never first thing in the morning.

                              Maybe you could post some daily meals on that forum to see if anyone can help you understand the changes you need to make. You are using too much Splenda - daily, 3 packets are allowed, we use cream not milk, veggies are a huge part of our daily meals because the largest percentage of carbs is suppose to come from veggies. We also don't support the use of bars and shakes - they are known to stall weight loss also. I think you need to read the book again.
