Hi! I am in induction (again- stupid strawberries) and I was wondering- What should my food percentages be (ie: protien, fats, carbs...etc...). How do I know when I'm in ketosis? What is Ketosis (In words a 15 yr old can understand, please)?

    How aweful is my menu?
    Breakfast-None
    Lunch-None
Snack (4pm)- Celery sticks and spinach
Dinner (7pm)- 1 medium steak and 3 dinner sausages (cooked in tomato sauce in a crocpot)
Dessert- 1/2 cup no sugar added ice cream (6net carbs)

I know- it looks bad, can somebody PLEASE help me.......

Thanks in advance to all help (I know I'm a disaster)

    Re: Induction crisis!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!! Please!!!!!!

Ashley, my dear, have you read the book? It is so-o-o-o-o important to read how Dr. Atkins wants you to follow this way of life. He also explains about ketosis, although I'm sure there are some here who can give you the "simple" answer. If you don't have the book, check your library. If they don't have it or can't get it, read all you can on this board on induction and post often so we can try to monitor how you're doing. I can tell you skipping meals isn't good and will do you no good. You need 20 carbs a day, half of them from veggies. And at least 64 oz. of pure water - no "diet" cokes, no matter what they're sweetened with.

Please post again - we're here for you and you can succeed!

        Re: Induction crisis!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!! Please!!!!!!

        In a nutshell...

Ketosis means your body is burning fat for fuel. One of the byproducts of burning fat is a substance called ketones. Your body uses them for fuel when you don't eat enough carbs for fuel. Excess keytones are released through your breath and urine.

The easiest way to check to see if you are in ketosis is to use ketostix.

As for food percentages, I believe it goes

        Fat 65%

        protien 30%

        Carbs 5%

As for your menu... it is truely awful.

You should not go any more than 6 hours without eating. This is to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

The bulk of your carbs should be coming from fresh salad vegetables.... again to keep your blood sugar steady.

Ice cream (even sugar free) is not allowed during induction. This is to keep your insuline levels low.

Ashley, please eat breakfast and lunch that is the only way it will work. Try to eat something. If you don't have time fix some boiled eggs the night before and have one in the morning. My daughter has eggs in the morning and takes a lunchable to school and doesnt eat the crackers she also takes a small trail mix I make from nuts and coconut of course that is not for induction, but she takes string cheese and a drink in a lunch bag with a cooler in it . you really need to eat during these time because your body will react to not eating and not in a good way.

                Re: Induction crisis!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!! Please!!!!!!

                Ashley,

Here are some of highlights on how to lose the weight safely and KEEP IT OFF.

If you don't eat enough and if you skip meals, your body lowers its metabolism because it doesn't know when or if you are going to feed it again. That is why it is important to eat breakfast and lunch and dinner. It is also why you should be shooting for 1500 calories a day.

Eating things that taste sweet, whether they have sugar or not, teaches your taste buds to want sweets. This is one reason why things like low carb ice cream are not allowed in Induction. You need to retrain your body to not be looking for sugar all the time.

Water helps carry away the toxins and flushes the fats out of your body. If you weigh 200 pounds, 100 ounces is a good number to shoot for. If you weigh 160, then shoot for 80 ounces. Minimum of 64 ounces a day of PLAIN WATER.

Vegetables are essential because they give you many of the nutrients you cannot get elsewhere in your diet. They also keep you digestive tract moving due to the fiber. You need to eat your veggies-not just lettuce, either.

You need proper nutrition in order to give you enough energy to exercise. Without your veggies and fats you will feel tired out and drained of energy.

If you go to your local or high school library I am sure you will be able to find a copy of DANDR there, or in any bookstore nearby. If you are serious about wanting this to be permanent then take it seriously enough to do it right. The book is actually a lot more interesting than you might think.

                Good luck.

                  Re: Induction crisis!!!!!!!!! Help!!!!! Please!!!!!!

Ashley - is there a second hand book store near where you live? You might be able to get a copy of the DANDR book there very cheap. Are your parents helping you with the plan or are you doing this on you own? You should have one of your parents come on the site and we can help them understand what and how you should be eating with the Atkins plan.

The biggest problem I see with the day of food you posted is you aren't even close to eating enough vegetables. You need veggies at each meal not just at snack time. You should eat 3 meals at day or 5 smaller snack size meals. Since you are in school you should carry a plastic bag of veggies and rolled up ham or other meat with you so when you get hungry there is something handy to eat instead of junk.

I agree with Chinadoll. You can't skip meals it only takes 5 minutes to make a couple scrambled eggs in the morning with some peppers or onions and meat in them. If you don't start the morning with food in your stomach your mind wanders and your body doesn't function properly.

Eat only food on the acceptable foods list, if something isn't on that list, you DON'T eat it!

Percentages (I know carbs are a bit high, but I can't think of what I can have to lower carb percent)

Since you are 15 years old, you will be best served following the low carb diet in Feed Your Kids Well, by Dr. Fred Pescatore. Dr. Pescatore was the associate director of the Atkins Center and that diet was the one used at the Atkins Center for children and teenagers, like you.

Atkins is an adult-based diet. Adults have less nutritional needs than children and, especially teenagers. We are only now learning the effects of poor nutrition during adolescence has later on in adulthood. So it's really foolish (and perhaps dangerous) for children and teenagers to follow a diet that is specifically written for adults.

                          Here's Dr. Pescatore's book:

And when you get Dr. Pescatore's book, please read it so you will do it properly. I know I'm going to get bashed for this, but I've been following your menues and it's obvious that you have no clue how to do Atkins and have not taken the time to even read what little information about Atkins we have here on ADBB. Don't do this when you get Dr. Pescatore's book. You're doing the lazy way out and that can only prove dangerous to you in the end.

Also, when you get Dr. Pescatore's book, you should let your parents read it and your doctor read it. Then you all should decide if it is a diet that is suitable to you.

Ashley, Meg is right! I can't speak to the book she's recommending, but I, too, like Meg, find it obvious you have not studied Atkins at all! You will make yourself sick eating the way you are. It's a starvation diet and your body will not only give up nothing, you will probably gain as your body hangs on to every morsel. Please, at least, read what you can find on the 'net about Atkins. Read AND FOLLOW the rules of Induction. We can't do this for you and you have to do it if you're going to do Atkins.

Okay, I will get on my researching boots and find out more about Atkins. I'm sorry, I know this is wrong, but I would rather do Atkins, than that other thing. Thank you anyways. Also, you both are correct about me knowing nothing. I am going to try my best, and that is all I can say.
