about how unhealthy Atkins is? I'll admit, the weight loss is amazing and really motivating, but eating 65% fat..that just can't be good for your arteries

Dear Rifleman, have you read the book yet? Did you like many others who haven't think that Atkins is only comprised of the 2-week induction phase???

Gee, if my 65% fat on induction was bad for me, how come, on extended induction, I lost 50 pounds, recurrent backaches, plantar faciitis, depression, trouble sleeping, shortness of breath on light exertion, 30+ BP points, and gained the ability to hike the MD portion of the AT with a 60+ pound pack on? (Yes, knees improved too!!)

I know. It is so totally bad.
I have gone from being obese to being normal weight range. I exercise - even run four times a week. My cholesterol levels are great. And I feel fabulous.

            This cannot be good?????

                    Re: Anyone concerned?

I adopted the Atkins lifestyle at the advice of my physician.

And Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution is not the only place where you can learn how the world has been brainwashed into the lowfat dogma that has permeated our society. If you are really serious about learning the truth about the Big Fat Lie, pick up Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. It is just sickening how we have been lied to about the "dangers" of fat.

As Dr. Atkins points out, eating fat is only bad for you when you eat refined, processed carbs along with it. Atkins is not a fad diet... there is definite science behind it. I would do my homework, before telling people who are living the Atkins lifestyle successfully (with medical test results to prove it), that Atkins isn't good for you.

Here are some links about fat from the folks at Weston A. Price

                      Myths and Truths About Nutrition

Also, I don't worry about being on Atkins or Atkins being unhealthy. Dr. Atkins was a strong proponent of eating natural, whole, minimally processed and refined foods. And that's what I eat----natural, whole, minimally processed and refined foods.

Frankly, I think the more people will look into it, the more we'll learn that Dr. Atkins was right and the low fat people were wrong. I read an article in a woman's magazine that said bacon is "good" for you. Why? Because 45% of the fat in bacon is mono-unsaturated and that mono-unsaturated fat is oleic acid, which is a healthy kind of fat.

I remember in the 1980s foods like avocados, nuts, and certain seafoods were "bad" because they were high fat....now, if you pick up any magazine, you'll read how "good" avocados, nuts and certain seafoods are for your body.

rifleman, nope nope nope no flaming allowed, tos rule

everybody, we already know that this thread has the potential to erupt so lets keep it civil, provide information, answer the questions asked and maybe, just maybe, we'll make it through the day without locking up something .

hmmmm let me see, am i concerned ....

                        i was 168, now 131-133
i was as wide as i am tall and now i'm more 'balanced".
i couldn't breath when bending over, now i can double over and can inhale and exhale
my blood pressuree was 180/100, now is consistantly around 125/68
my HDL was 29, now 77 [most excellent]
i use to eat doughnuts, cakes, pies and now it's whole wheat pasta, soy flour waffles topped with cooked cranberries and LOTS of vegetables.
my knees hurt just by taking a few steps up a ladder and now, i'm climbing flights in our Pledging Flights Challenge.
i was addicted to sugar which was feeding my cancer and my now i'm not feeding it any more because i'm cancer free [1 year as of yesterday]

no, i can honestly say that i am not conerned at all about eating the Atkins way. reaccurance of cancer bothers me but not my way of eating! in fact, the way i eat now is helping to lower the chance of my cancer coming back.

you are allowed to ask the question, many before you have done so, however, we would strongly recommend you read the 2002 edition of the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution.

i would ask, and i'm sure you will reply..... if this concerns you, why would you start Atkins? Critique my meals today (3rd day of induction)
wouldn't you want to get all the information before you started anything that might cause you concern for being unhealthy?

                          Re: Anyone concerned?

I can understand that some people may worry. It is what we have been led to believe. But in fact there is little evidence linking eating fats to heart disease. Now being fat - and having a bigger risk for heart disease that is another matter.
I posted this link in the research forum

Here is a link to dr Biffa's blog commenting on this research
No evidence that saturated fat causes heart disease (it’s official) | Dr Briffa's Blog

If you look around and do your own research you will see that this seems to be a fact. So the current "wisdom" that eating fat is bad for you is simply a myth. (Transfats should be avoided though)

I also suggest looking at Dr Eades blog.

                          Anyways good luck.
