I was hoping you don't ask that...

Splenda has dextrose and maltodextrin as fillers. The quantities are very small, so they contribute with less than 1 g of carbohydrate per packet. So, if you extrapolate a little (okay..... a lot!), you could count 1 serving of sausage as 1 serving of sweetener, since it has less than 1 carb per serving.... Just don't add it in your tea...

Some of us cannot tolerate even small amounts of dextrose and maltodextrin in our diets. Because I am one of the unlucky folks, I cannot have most sweeteners. Others are not affected so much or they are not affected at all.

In the end it is your choice how much you are willing to risk. If it causes you blood sugar symptoms or if you believe it negatively affects your weight loss, you should, of course, stop eating it immediately. And by the way, blood sugar symptoms don't necessarily mean cravings, but also stuff like anxiety, headaches, bloating, rapid heart beat, etc. The complete list is in DANDR, Chapter 12, pp. 150-151.

Oh, and print the Induction Acceptable Food List and the list with the different forms of sugar, and take them with your next time you go shopping, so you can check if a food is okay or not before buying it.

          Re: My FitDay Results

Thanks, I wrote them all down!!! My printer is out of ink and I don't have the extra money to buy more right now.

Over all we feel ok... tired & no energy as always and no signs of ketosis. Well, hubby seems to have them a bit anyway. I don't, unless my face being red and hot is a sign... but I am thinking its salt related. I don't know, I am so confused and annoyed!

Why can they get away with saying there is NO SUGAR when in fact there is... its just under a "special" name... I am so frustrated, I feel like all of this has been for nothing. It really doesn't help I gained 3 inches, it adds to my frustration. I could have enjoyed a friggen candy bar for them 3 inches! UGH

Ok, so I guess we are starting over again then..... I AM SO MAD!!!!!

No, you're not starting over. As Johnny Walker would say, keep walking. You will be doing extended Induction anyway and have a long way to go. You'll learn as you go and no one sends you back to the start line if you don't do everything perfect, so don't punish yourself by doing that and don't let this discourage you.

Sodium can make you gain 3 inches. So can TOM. You would have to try very hard to gain 3 inches of fat in a week or so, which means it's probably water. But when these things go away (TOM, sodium), you will certainly lose weight.

One suggestions would be to drink more water. The more you weigh, the more water you need... so you'll need more than 64 oz. Water will also help in "flushing" the extra sodium.

I could have enjoyed a friggen candy bar for them 3 inches! UGH
Nope, it would not have been the same. If you had eaten candy bars, you would have continued to damage your health. But you didn't do that and instead are working towards a healthier/slimmer you. Atkins is not magic (though many think so ), but if you give it some time, the results of your work will show.

Related to this, here's something not2late posted a while ago: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...cool-whip.html

They hide sugar in a lot of foods. Think of it this way: you now know what to avoid next time you go shopping. You are definitely on the right path.

              Re: My FitDay Results

I can't seem to write everything in one post today... Let's see if I can do it this time.

It's a good idea to start a journal where you record everything you eat and do, so you can observe any correlation between your eating habits/cravings and your reaction to certain foods, events, etc. This way you will discover what you triggers are and you'll be able to avoid them. Triggers do not necessarily mean certain foods, but also certain events, persons, attitudes and so on... so keep your eyes wide open.

When you are frustrated and think candy bars would make you feel better, do some exercise. The endorphins will relieve the stress and help you control whatever cravings you might have. Plus, you will feel better about yourself.

Here are some posts I think you should read:

                Re: My FitDay Results

Thank you, I had to go and do something else for a while. I was so angry that I was thinking "to **** with this" and almost went to the store for something really bad. I went and worked on a project I've been doing for a couple days now. It helped, I am calmer now. I did indulge in a little too much cream cheese.... so I will have to count that into my carbs now. I am thinking we won't do the pizza tonight, we need a more fat dense meal. Probably something beefy.

Can I ask why the veggies are so important? I know its been answered a billion times I am sure, the book probably says so too, I've just not gotten there yet. Anyway, it just seems like they are a waste of carbs when you can choose things like cheese, which is carb & FAT. I don't know, I am still really confused with this whole thing. Hopefully in a few days I will get the hang of it. Your words helped me a lot, thanks!

Those two things above you mentioned are most likely the cause for the gain, makes the most sense as TOM is almost here and I am eating a lot more salt then I am used to! I just got scared. Its weird how drinking more water, when your retaining water, works to flush excess water? I don't get that, but will try to drink more!

                Thanks again!

Good for you to have found a way to deal with this other of eating.

Can I ask why the veggies are so important?
Sure. Vegetables contain fiber, vitamins and minerals. Fiber, among other things, promotes a healthy digestive tract, lowers total and LDL cholesterol (the bad one), maintains a healthy pH in the intestines and helps in eliminating the waste products of digestion. I think it's clear why you need vitamins/minerals, but many people ask why can't they just take supplements instead. Well, supplements are just that -- supplements. They are meant to supplement what you are taking in from your diet. Also, even if a supplement contains, let's say, 70% of the [insert vitamin/mineral] RDA, you only absorb part of it. And if you think that you can just take 2 pills then, to meet your RDA, this doesn't work either, because the absorption rate decreases when increasing the dosage.

Anyway, it just seems like they are a waste of carbs when you can choose things like cheese, which is carb & FAT. I don't know, I am still really confused with this whole thing.
Atkins is not about counting carbs, but about learning to make healthier dietary choices. Cheese is okay, in certain amounts, but to get the necessary vitamins and minerals in your diet, you need to eat vegetables too. Also, do not forget that cheese is more calorie dense than vegetables. While Dr. Atkins told us we are not required to count calories, calories are still important.

Those two things above you mentioned are most likely the cause for the gain, makes the most sense as TOM is almost here and I am eating a lot more salt then I am used to!
I gain anything from 4 to 8 lbs when TOM is around. But it's just water retention due to hormones, so no worries -- it goes away quickly.

Its weird how drinking more water, when your retaining water, works to flush excess water? I don't get that, but will try to drink more!
Your body wants to maintain a certain concentration of sodium. So to prevent a jump in the sodium concentration, the body holds to a certain amount of water. But when you give it enough water, it will learn that you will keep doing so, so it can safely let go to the excess water and, together with it, to the extra sodium.

Dr. Atkins treated thousands of patients and he tweaked his diet in decades of work. The diet, as it is in DANDR 2002, is in the form that worked best for those thousands of patients. There will always be folks who will tell you "oh, you don't need veggies on Atkins" or "you don't have to exercise to lose weight... exercise is just for su*kers" or "my friends's aunt lost *** lbs on Atkins and she only ate meat, cheese, eggs... oh, and SF ice cream" or whatever, but between these tales and Dr. Atkins' observations and experience, I think it is clear who's advice and diet you should follow.

On FitDay, what am I looking for in regards to the carb count... the number or the percentage? Just double checking.

I am confused, the number says 12.9 but the percentage says 3%

                        Re: My FitDay Results

The number of net carbs (total minus fiber) is the one to look for.

You might need to set a 'goal' for fiber in your fitday account to get it to show the fiber carbs as well as the total carbs in your daily totals so you can work out the net carbs.

Because fitday lists them and shows you that pretty 'pie chart' some people also look at the percentages of fat/protein/carbs which on induction should be something like 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs, but don't get too 'anal' about them.

They were not a rule set by Dr Atkins in DANDR or any of his other books but were arrived at during a study by Dukes University when they worked out that those percentages 'happened' if you ate according to the induction menus
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Just to clarify this for newbies. As Elizellen said, it's not the carbohydrates FitDay shows that should be under 20 grams, but the total carbohydrates minus the dietary fiber.
