  • Headaches gone!

HI all.. I am new to this forum.. my background Is: I have tried loads and loads of different eating plans, from fruitarian ( which was probably the worst ) to the Anabolic diet.. I am coming round to the idea that Atkins is probably the most sensible eating approach in terms of low carbs, Im actually eating more veg now than I used to and noticing weight fall off me allready so absolutely delighted.. I also have a nice energy and mood.. a kind of lightness which is Hard to explain and my food cravings have dissapeared.. It all Just makes so much sense that Im actually a bit annoyed that there has been so much negative publicity about something that produces good results

My Body is definetely more in balance now and an added benefit is that my head pressure and headaches have just about cleared up too..

I also stumpled across this and thought It was a great read.. you might like it

      Re: Headaches gone!

Was on the Anabolic diet for a couple of months and noticed Good results, but feared for my heath a tiny bit.. they recommend over 40% from saturated fat ideally from pork or beef, but I still think thats healthier than gorging on bagles.. anyway I would get to the weekend and go on a carb binge to fuel workouts.. but the carb binge inevitably turned into an out and out gorgin session... It was a bit much and probably not that natural, It kind of triggered that addiction switch when you eat carbs and sugars,... as all they do is create the urge for more and more of the same thing.. So It wasnt healthy at all. There are I believe some benefits of having the odd day off and enjoying eating anything.. from a physiological and psychological point of veiw.. but thats another story

        Re: Headaches gone!

ya i have recently tried once a month carb ups somewhat like the anabolic diet but the anabolic diet is every week

first time i did it for half a day all my muscles got really sore and i felt sick

i really did not want to try it again but i did a month later i tried a carb up for 32 hours felt sick but during the 30th hour of the carb up i noticed i had caught a cold

anyways the Atkins diet is much safer

and every time you do a carb up with a anabolic diet your muscles temporary become insulin resistant like a high carb diet which sucks

the whole anabolic diet thing is tricking your body basically when you eat low carb your body makes more insulin receptors on your muscles and then the anabolic diet has a massive carb up day a giant toxic blood sugar spike that forces your body to make a ton of insulin and since your muscles are insulin sensitive from the low carb eating they will get filled to the max you gotta eat a ton of protein too

i dont know how good it is yet at building muscle

i have already gained a ton of muscle with the Atkins diet and eating around 50-60 carbs a day

also protein has a 56% or 57% conversion rate to glucose that can be used for your muscles and that does not store fat anywhere near as bad as blood sugar spikeing carbohydrates do

anyways welcome to the Atkins forums trust me the Atkins diet is a diet for life its awesome it cured my horrible IBS in 6 months and i lost around 110 pounds of fat off my body and must have gained around 40 pounds of muscle

anyways the longer you stick to Atkins the better you will feel also after a year or so on the diet you will no longer crave sugar or high carbs at all i feel very sick when ever i eat high carbs now lol

remmber to learn everything you can about the Atkins diet to get the best effects these Atkins forums have tons of very useful info

also remmber to drink extra extra water during the start of the diet and when your loseing lots of weight

and eat around 65% fat 30% protein 5% carbs 20 net carbs till you reach the Rungs

          Re: Headaches gone!

I actually had to hjave a carb ub session today as I felt relly weak and fatigued.. I could hardly walk up the stairs and was supposed to be playing football later on.. Is this normal, when your in Ketosis as a permenant state on the Atkins, do you eventually feel energised and able to do sporting activity?

            Re: Headaches gone!

are you just at the 14 day induction?

during the start of the diet its normal to feel crappy but you gotta stick to it untill your body fully changes to a fat burning metabolism

eating high amounts of fat in the 65% range and low carbs in the 5% and 30% protein really helps and encourages and forces your body to change into a fat burning metabolism

one of the reasons the start of the diet is only 20 net carbs is so your body will be encouraged to switch to a fat burning metabolism

also form my personal exp with this this is somewhat what i think i felt like

im not 100% accurate on this

100% would be the energy i had before the Atkins diet and with IBS disease and before going to the gym but i did do lots of cardio from my job about 12-14 hours a week

            from starting the Atkins diet

            1-4 days 30-40% normal energy

i found that with in about 8 days i had 70% my normal energy 20 net carb

with in 2 months about 90%
with in 4 months about 130%
with in 6 months 200% IBS cured big energy boost
            and like 8 months 210%

still 20 net carb and still no gym just walking lots like cardio

then way later started going to the gym and doing the Atkins diet better i only knew how to do induction when i first started and i never found these forums xD anyways once the gym and doing the Atkins diet 100% properly i got around 600%+ energy and basically never run out of energy now

im positive you will notice energy gains alot faster than me though because you dont have IBS and also if you do heavy weight lifting gym like things and also do the Atkins diet 100% properly

remmber it doesnt work over night your body takes time to fully switch its metabolism and when you feel crappy from not eating carbs you gotta wait it out and eat high fat till your body switches its metabolism

another tip for helping the switch is to remmber to stick to induction 20 net carb max and also 30% protein because 57% of protein can be converted to glucose if you go out of your way to eat tons of fat free meat your metabolism may not switch if you eat too high of protein

so its a must to stay close to 65% fat 30% protein 5% 20 net carbs

maybe at the start of the diet try 75% fat 20% protein 5% 20 net carbs

use fitday to help make sure you are eating the right % and remmber fiber does not count towards net carbs

once your body fully uses fat as its main source of fuel and is fully a fat burning metabolism you will feel great. and then with in a year or so you wont want to go anywhere near high amounts of carbohydrates cause they will make you sick xD

              Re: Headaches gone!

thanks for this.. its encouraging, I obviously need to stick at it for a bit and just lay off any heavy excersise whilst doing it. I have these niggling fears in me that somehow to restrict carbs might be bad.. It comes from so much societal conditioning, like something bad might happen by doing this.. some biological thing, but I have read so many success stories of people looking and feeling great.. this probably is the way to eat.. I guesse modern agriculture is only a modern thing and our anscestors wouldnt be existing of a large amount of carbs from plant life.. no way, maybe the odd fruit or berries , but It would mostly have to be animal and fish that they could hunt and catch.. or farm so It cant be bad... I was going to tell my Doctor I was doing this to see his reaction but I might not bother as he might have some preconcieved notion about it all and tell me its a bad idea... thats what I hate, so called experts like Doctors who have such a powerful influence on peoples lives, yet who might not realise what they are saying!!

                Re: Headaches gone!

My experience has been, initially feel great, improved mood and general well being, presumably because im not putting so many carbs in me.. and my body is using up its stores but then around day 4 felt a big slump... couldnt do much heavy activity and felt very lethargic .. then started to worry I was maybe damagin my body a bit or something... But I will try again.. I find I fill up better with mined beef rather than chicken, probably because of the fat

lunch: chilli with can of chopped tomatoe and a tiny bit of chopped onion and caine pepper..

breakfast: 3 boiled eggs and a salad

dinner: chicken wings or thighs with the skin and some veg and salad

snacks I have those cheese string things

dont know if the fat ratio would be quite enough though with those meals.. and its saturated fat, which probably isnt as bad for us as the Government were letting on anyway .. do you think this would be ok?

Thanks for the very interesting link! I actually read an interesting interview with Walter Willett, who has been involved in the huge diet research mentioned in the article:

heavy activity as in lifting heavy weights body building right

this is what i think is happening

currently your muscles are very insulin resistant from the high carb diet you used to be on and thats why by day 4 of low carb they feel very weak and you cant do much

so stick too the 20 net carb 14 day induction to kick start your metabolism and your over all bodys adaption

your body will start to make more insulin receptors on your muscles and sooner or later your muscles will become insulin sensitive

once your muscles are insulin sensitive all the carbohydrate glucose that you do eat will go straight to them

and also by then they should be sensitive enough to grab the protein converted glucose as well

cause remmber protein converted glucose does not spike blood sugar levels anywhere near as bad as carbohydrate glucose if at all

and spiked blood sugar levels are toxic and make your body produce more insulin to bring it down and one of insulins other jobs is to move nutrients to your muscles and if your insulin is too high it will also store fat on your body

this means when you eat low carb it is a low insulin diet and your current insulin resistant muscles can not pick up the nutrients or glucose and become weak cause of it

so you just gotta wait it out till your body adapts and makes more insulin receptors on your muscles

personally i like to eat 50-70 carbohydrates a day to get the best work outs it seems to keep my muscles insulin sensitive while at the same time my body makes a bit more insulin cause its 50-70 carbs and not 20 or 30 and so my insulin sensitive muscles easily soak up all the nutrients

however maybe if i was not careful and missed work outs they would overflood and then start becomeing insulin resistant again or just semi resistant so i gotta make sure i work out alot if im eating around 50-70 carbs

anyways just stick at 20 net carbs for now and follow the Atkins diet 100% and climb the rungs and add 5 net carbs slowly each week or so after induction

and keep working out your body and draining the glucose from your muscles with lifting as heavy weights as you can and they will adapt faster cause your body knows the muscles need to become insulin sensitive to soak more glucose up and nutrients to become strong

heres 2 good videos that explain it really well
YouTube - BODY BY SCIENCE 5 (The Science Of Fat Loss -- Part 1)

YouTube - BODY BY SCIENCE 5 (The Science Of Fat Loss -- Part 2)

                    now as for your food
brands of cheese strings have like 1 carb each so dont eat them you can easily go over 20 net carbs a day if you eat that it also might have sugar which is not allowed

you need to know how many vegetables you are eating you can go over 20 net carbs if you eat to many

if your like me who hates mesuring the amount of vegetables then you prob should stick to only eating the lowest carb vegetables so you dont risk going over 20 net carbs atleast untill you are past induction

Low-Carb Vegetables: List of Vegetables to Eat When Cutting Carbs

eat up untill broccoli and nothing past that then you can eat alot and you prob wont go over 20 net carbs

but really you should be mesureing everything and adding it into fitday.com to see your carbs so that way you could still eat things like tomatos if you were careful remmber fiber doesnt count so if your total carbs are 20 and 10 are fiber then its only 10 net carbs

remmber to eat when ever you are hungry but if your carbs are near 20 net for the day then make it something like eggs or meat

and remmber to drink extra extra water during weight loss

Hi, I read the link, was good.. only thing is, he recommends eating wholegrain carbs.. which would definetely not be in line with Atkins ideas would it? What do you make of this?

One thing I have noticed is how hungry I can get a after a meal if any kind of starchy carb is present.. I experimentd once and noticed that If I increased my carb intake to 300g a day of 'healthy' carbs from whole grains and fruits ( which is a lot of food ) I could still feel more hunger about a couple of hours later.. I felt particularly good on those days in terms of energy because obviously I was flooding my muscles with insulin and glucose and my workouts were particularly good too, but I felt tired initially after any meal for a short period.

When I switched to low carbs from veg with a bit more fat and meat I was not hungry... In fact I had my lunch of home made chilli at half twelve and I still wasnt that hungry by around 6pm.. now that is very unusual for me. The only problem was that of energy as I felt lethargic and fatigued by day 4.. which would make sense in terms of my insulin receptors, I am hoping now that eventually my body will adapt to lower carbs and better utilise glucose produced from fat in my body and dietry fat.. I am being my own gunie pig here ha ha!

                        Anyone had any similar experience?

the insulin receptors and muscle thing i talked about was i thought you were doing body building exercise and were confused to why your muscles got sore and were weaker from doing low carb Atkins diet xD

as a body builder id get very upset if my muscles got weaker and unless i knew they would get better again i would stop what i was doing xD

but if its energy and stuff you are talking about and not just muscles thats just the induction flu just watch this video it passes dont worry keep staying 20 net carbs for the full 14 days

                            Re: Headaches gone!

I am [in no way shape or form!] a weight lifter or body builder, and have no idea what is meant by "insulin resistant muscles" (sounds like a seafood dish to me!), but I do know that I am now running everyday (only between 3 & 6km but consistently at about 9-10km/h) and do 4 hours of pole-dance classes a week, and I felt a difference in motivation, strength & stamina within a week.
I had started on Atkins at New Years - mainly just the diet and a little exercise, but had strayed somewhat over Easter and ended up 7 lbs heavier, so have been trying to get back on the wagon over the past 2 weeks, and with the exercise, it really has made a noticeable difference.
I know that I always suffer a lot with induction flu in the first week, but after that I feel markedly more positive, about 75% less hungry with more energy, even managing to get out of bed each morning at the disgusting and ridiculous hour of 5.30am with not too much effort! Ah the joys of ketosis!! Once you have got the sugars and carbs out and to a controllable level so that you can get your bod into ketosis, you will really experience a boost!

With regards to the Walter Willett interview - I thought it was a nice example of someone well-respected in the Food and Nutrition field to be speaking up for low-carb, high fat/protein regimes for once, and talking at length about how low-fat diets just are not effective.
The part about the whole grains is in keeping with the Lifetime maintenance plan on Atkins, where you want to stay the weight you are. For the initial loss though, it's true that we keep those out!

Best of luck with your continued induction!
