  • mmm...coffee....

    Hey there!

I just signed up and wanted to seek some opinions about coffee, caffeine, diet soda w/ or w/o splenda, tea etc.

I am pretty moderate with my consumption of these bevs and have been consuming the on Induction despite what it says to do...they don't make me crave, I have been losing on a very steady basis and I really don't want to cut these simple pleasures...I guess I was just wondering if anyone else out there consumes these things and has had no problem keeping some steady weight loss...I just don't want it to come back to haunt me.

I know diet soda is really bad for you as it is, and I really want to make it a mini goal to cut down to 1 can or less per day, eventually working it out of my life, but I work as a waitress and it is a welcomed treat after a long day of bringing people there delish looking food...plus there are a lot more harmful things I could do to my body (justification, I know...)

Anyway...please if you have some time, I would love some different imputs about these bevs. Any point of view is welcome!

    Thanks y'all...

        Re: mmm...coffee....

Personally, I enjoy diet soda and coffee AND I want to lose weight.

So for me (not everyone), I wanted to find out:
        a) Can I, personally, with this body and this lifestyle consume those things and lose weight?
        b) If not, which thing (drinks or weight loss) do I want more?

So that's just the way I look at it and NOT a rule for everyone. Heh. I want to be clear on that.

Here's what I have found so far.
        1. I haven't been drinking diet pop but am still stuck on a plateau anyways. (Boooooo)
        2. I have been drinking two cups of half-decaf-half-regular coffee in the morning, and that's going to be one of things I try cutting out in order to break my plateau. I LOVE coffee, absolutely adore it, BUT I am willing to live without it if it means I can lose more weight.

One last time, that's just me and every single person on this earth is different!

Welcome to the board leecee and I hope you stick around and share your journey with us!

Just a note about caffeine and cravings....Dr. Atkins wrote "excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar" Plenty of people interpret the "unstable blood sugar" as "cravings". Not so. The Blood Sugar Symptom Test lists over 20 blood sugar instability symptoms. Ironically, one symptom of blood sugar instability is "drinking 3 cups of coffee/cola" daily and another is "craving sweets or coffee". So even "needing" or "loving" or "wanting" coffee/caffeine is a sign of blood sugar instability.

            Re: mmm...coffee....

I started with 3 cans of diet caffeine free soda per day... that was the first 2 months. I realized that I wasn't getting very much liquid. So then I started supplementing that with water/crystal light. I realized that I could drink a lot more of that than the soda because it was easier to drink more per sip due to the fact that it wasn't carbonated. In the past month I have cut out the soda all together and am now completely on crystal light. My goal is 4 per day (64 oz). I have been searching for a flavored water made with splenda, but for now I'm happy with my liquid intake and it doesn't effect my weight loss. (If it does, I don't care if I lose a little slower, at least I enjoy my meals.)

Is that 64 oz of Crystal Light per day? That's like 8 servings of sweetener, isn't it?

Many of Dr. Atkins' patients were stalled by excessive consumption of sweeteners (which he defined as more than 3 servings per day), which is what he says in DANDR 1992 and why DANDR 2002 includes the max. 3 packets of sweetener per day limit.

                Re: mmm...coffee....

I LOVE coffee but I always order it decaf! I like to go to DD (Dunkin Donuts) and I get an iced coffee and they have flavored syrups sugar free made with splenda - I always get the coconut flavor and I only consume coffee once a day if that - i can skip days if needed (but in your case I know you are around food all the time but its up to you how much of a willpower you are willing to give and how bad you want to lose the weight.)

As for soda, I rarely drink it and if I do I get the cola or orange made with splenda and its caffeine free....I can't recall the name of the soda brand but its go to me.

These are the advices I can give you and maybe with knowing this it can help you with options.

Just don't consume too much caffeine or aspartam which is found in a lot of diet soda - the brand I use is the only one I've noticed which is made with splenda - if anyone knows which one I'm talking about please place it here - I can't remember it for the life of me and I apologize.

Good luck and you can do it if you set yourself to reaching that goal!

Mindy, how long have you been on induction?

Netty, the name of the soda sweetened with Splenda is Diet Rite.

                    Re: mmm...coffee....

I'm sure Dr. Atkins didn't suggest crystal light and regular coffee by the pot full for a reason. I keep reading where people disregard this part of the plan then they freak when they stop loosing and wonder why.

First thing in the morning I have 1 cup of decaf coffee with a packet of Splenda - then I drink my recommended water, once my water intake for the day is done (I drink 150 oz a day of pure water - nothing added) I have 1 more cup of decaf around bedtime.

Diet Rite is the soda that is sodium, caffeine free and made with Splenda - it comes in a few flavors and is something I drank 6 - 8 cans of daily before I started Atkins. I have tried to drink a can from time to time with a meal but find it makes my stomach upset and it's not something I truly want in my body. I'd rather have my pure water first because I know it's better for me and is what keeps me on track.

I still drink coffee in the morning with heavy cream and some liquid splenda stuff and its not a problem at all for me. I have noticed that my coffee consumption is less than half of when I started Atkins. I find that I just don't *need* it as much! I plan to cut to one cup per day.

Soda is neither here nor there for me. I can take it or leave it. I have some on extended induction, but I don't feel compelled. I prefer water.

wow this is cool. I didn't realize this. I posted my response before I read everyone elses, and this confirms my natural reduction in coffee intake. I just don't feel the compulsion to drink it anymore.

                          Re: mmm...coffee....

                          Thanks guys!!

I am pretty moderate with my consumption considering how much coffee I used to drink...I am not dependent on it, though, thankfully (I know this just because I can go days with out it, I just really love that morning cup and since I am taking summer classes and am a HUGE procrastinator, I will have one at night sometimes just to get through my essays, etc...haha)

Anyway...I will keep monitoring my use and I also know another splenda soda, Waist Watchers, which is DELISH!

I am gonna ponder the importance of these beverages a little more, but for now, since they aren't stalling me...they are my friends and helpers with this WOE. I will have no problem cutting them once they are stalling me up...

Here is something random....I must admit ..I have been going on the Induction for 12 days now and tonight my Aunt had a BBQ with Kabobs. I resisted all the random carbo loaded temptations and the only thing I could eat was shrimp and kabob. The meat had BBQ sauce on it and I wiped them down as best I could before eating them, but I still feel bad about eating it...I just didn't want to be rude...It is funny that I am so freaked about this BBQ sauce, though...I know it isn't gonna kill me, but geez...guess I will have to be diligent tomorrow! I don't think it is that big a deal, but it is just the first time I have had to question anything going into my mouth so far...sorry...just a random thought that I wanted to share.

Well done on sticking as close to Atkins as you could
I have sometimes been in the situation of being served meat with a sauce on it and what I do is dunk the meat in a glass of water to get off as much sauce as I can
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I dont think its a big deal either. Its better that you ate if you were hungry and modified what you had available to you then go with nothing. And plenty of people dont like bbq sauce.
