  • Exercise and ketosis question...

    Scenario 1:
On Sunday, Person A begins a perfect induction, but does not exercise.

    Scenario 2:
On Sunday, Person A begins a perfect induction, but exercises at a moderate intensity each day.

Assume that Person A eats the same exact food/quantities/water, etc. in each scenario.

Therefore, all things being equal, will Person A go into ketosis sooner under Scenario 2 because of the exercise? Does the exercise promote the depletion of the glycogen stores?

Well, thanks for that... Explains why I'm not in ketosis yet after 3 days. Will be hitting gym today! I've had some peanut-butter induced slip ups, and am back on track eating-wise...

Peanut butter is evil. After almost 5 years on Atkins, I cannot allow peanut butter into the house. It calls it's siren song from wherever I hide it from myself. Last winter I tried three times to buy peanut butter to bake peanut butter cookies at Christmas, but, alas, failed to even bake one cookie.

Slapshot, I was wondering this same thing.
Remember though, that starting any exercise regamine, you could gain slightly.. but it's nothing to be alarmed about.. the weight will fall off I got myself freaked out b/c I worked out on all my first days and didnt lose right away but then it came flying off. LOL! The inches don't lie

Me too. My wife has hidden ours, at my request. I bought the natural peanut butter thinking that I could take 2 tablespoons (1 serving) and that would be enough. Not even close. The jar was gone in 4 days. Ugh! And, of course, peanut butter is a gateway drug to other stuff, too, so the past few weeks have been mildly off plan. Back on it now, though.

                mmmmmmm....peanut butter...

That evil butter was the cuase of my downfall the last time as well. PreAtkins I would eat it by the jar.
Now I have to stop thinking about peanut butter now.

I think I'll follow suit on this one.

Do you think a small amount of Peanut butter like one ounce is enough to take you out of ketosis. I also love peanut butter but having just a tiny taste is enough to satisfy my craving. I don't eat half the jar or anything but I would be so mad at myself if that little lick took me out of ketosis for three days/ Net carbs in the ounce are 3 grams. It probably differs from person to person how many carbs will knock you out. Just curious.

Probably should wait until you are on the nut rung (3) for the peanutbutter. Just a thought.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

                      1st mini goal: 145! met 12/09
                      2nd mini goal: 140!
                      3rd mini goal:135!
                      4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

I also wondered if exercise would speed up the onset of ketosis. I cycle around 20 miles a day but it took me four days and even now on day five I am drifting in and out of itI am wondering if people who are used to regular exercise develop larger stores of glycogen and need to work harder and longer to get to ketosis?

Exercise will burn the available glycogen, so assuming you are just starting a low carb diet it will help you reach ketosis faster. Exercise is also ketogenic, so it will increase the rate at which ketones are produced. However, just because your body is making more ketones, it does not mean these extra ketones will necessarily show on the ketostix (I guess that's how you are testing) making the color darker, because part/all of them will be used for energy. The ketostix only measure excess acetoacetate (one of the three types of ketones our bodies make) that you spill over into urine. Also, drinking more water, which is likely to happen when you are exercising, dilutes the urine, thus decreasing the concentration of ketones.

So you can be in ketosis without even changing the color of the stix. Do you notice any of the physical signs of ketosis, like reduced appetite, increased thirst, more energy, nasty/fruity breath, different smell of your urine or sweat, different taste in your mouth?

Georgiana, thanks for your reply to that question, you really seem to know your stuff. The only signs I can say I have noticed from your list are greatly increased thirst, decreased appetite, and today (day 5) I feel as though I have a lot more energy, but I did feel very, very tired for the first three days. My urine is very pale/dilute. I was so happy when a ketostick turned positive yesterday, then today I had two negatives. Seem to be getting thinner though.

My apologies to the O.P. for the temporary thread hijack!
