The most accurate test for ketones is a serum ketone test because the "serum" ketone comprises about 80% of your total ketone population. Frankly, I'm not crazy about getting my blood drawn for something I can figure out by being aware of physical signs.
Anyhow, if you do use the ketostix....you're better off using the "Chem 10" strips found in most medical clinics and hospitals. That strip also contains a test for "urine specific gravity", which will give you an idea of your degree of hydration. It also tests for glucose, protein, white blood cells etc. So that will give you an idea of how your kidneys are functioning as well.
