  • Dental & Atkins...

Hi im on Atkins but with a twist because IM not on it to diet - I could lose some Wight but its not the reason IM on it . My Dental Dr. told me to get my molar pulled as its infected and this is why its hurting - But I could not accept this and looked for other alternatives like a root canal but can't afford a crown , as I only have 856 dollars ( Uninsured ) Another Dr told me I could get a deep filling to stop the pain but I would still need to get a root canal later on - then added this

IF I went on Atkins with , high calcium , vitamin A B C , high protein , No sugar , wonders can happen with teeth . Its been 3 days since I went on this diet and the pain is going away .

So IM thinking about getting my teeth cleaned 120 - Deep filling - 140 - fill in exciting cavities 600 - and stay on this style of life style . Im shocked to find this Diet can go hand in hand with teeth . Im sorry if Dairy ( Cheese calcium pills ) is not allowed but Dr orders

    Carbo intake under 20

It's not that Dairy isn't allowed it is just added in later on in OWL. During induction you are recommended to take supplements and you can have cheese. If you haven't please read the book, or at bare minimum the stickies in the Induction thread.

Treat, as in snack for times when you're hungry? Cheese chips, deviled eggs, cucumber sticks with cream cheese, olives, cheese.

I like string cheese. I get them in 1 oz portions and nibble on them when I get hungry when I am out and about. This way I keep myself away from foods I don't want.

I don't like to call it snacking because that is what got me in to trouble to begin with. I think as it more as delaying my hunger until I am home and can fix something healthy for myself.

On Atkins everyone is eating a sugar free diet. I have been sugar free (to the best of my knowledge) since April 13th.

Be careful with the lemon though...I was always told by my dentist that the acid in citric foods eat away at the enamel (sp?) on your teeth.

I am a dentist, and just wanted to comment here. Plaque is the cause of cavities, which are not affected by this diet. Sure, if you have a high sugar intake, you are more prone to decay, but as long as you brush and floss most people are fine. The vitamins and supplements that you mentioned have no effect on decay rate.

I know there are many healthy benefits that we all enjoy from a low carb responsible eating lifestyle, dental is not one of them however.

Well my pain is going away so its working for me .deep filling and cleaning will help as well - Last time I went to the dentist was 12 years ago ( 5 cavities ) ( 1 deep cavity molar ) Not bad

I wonder if this would work for me -

                  http://www.ehow.com/video_4399698_dental-fillings-instead-root-canal.html

Root canal is a rip off I mean come on 2100

I guess this is why my Dr said low carbs : Although all carbohydrates can cause tooth decay to some degree - Cavities: Tooth Disorders: Merck Manual Home Edition

Let me give you some free pointers to heal tooth infections:
                  1. Eliminate ALL processed sugar, especially foods containing white sugar, and greatly limit natural sugars (temporarily)
                  2. Drink certified raw milk from pasture raised animals. (pasteurized milk won't provide the same benefits)
                  3. Eat raw meat. Raw fish, like sashimi (white rice is probably not good in the case of infection) or raw beef like steak tartar.
                  4. Eat plenty of very yellow butter, preferably raw butter. Now is not the time to limit fat or worry about cholesterol, but rather it is a time to give your body what it needs.
                  5. Strictly avoid flour products, especially white bread or so called whole wheat bread and other white flour products. White flour will cause tooth infections sometimes within a few minutes. Limit grains to eating grains that are freshly ground and then fermented, like sourdough.

Lastly what made me wonder . My surgeon asked what my Dr said - almost as if if couldn't see the need for a root canal or extraction as he looked at the xray ? Why would he ask this . It kind of made me nervous .

                    Re: Dental & Atkins...

Sorry defected that you are going through this. The diet is not the source of your comfort...likely the nerve dying in the tooth. Diets are great for many things, just not the mouth.

Sugar causes tooth decay b/c bacteria feed off this to produce an acid that eat through the enamel of your teeth. Regardless, if you brush your teeth you can eat candy throughout the day and be relatively decay free. Your diet of low carbs still has the nutrients to provide bacteria the ability to survive. No sugar dieters still get decay if they don't brush. Just want to make sure we are all clear on this.

Much luck to you with your mouth.

Getting a second opinion could cost me 140 again - That I don't have ,I mean really why would my surgeon ask me what's wrong with my molar if he is looking at the xray ? Iv heard of Dr. Giving bad advice from mistaken Xrays - I could be one of them who could be getting conflicting views - Ah no insurance sucks - I can't get covered for my cavities or deep fillings - until I get this fixed insurance will not cover me ( Nope my work has no dental )

Is the surgeon that one who would be doing the root canal? I've had a couple of root canals/crowns, but my dentist is qualified to do them himself. I know that not all dentists are, though... my husband's dentist refers to an oral surgeon for root canals. Is that what your dentist did - refered you to an oral surgeon, and it's the oral surgeon who is questioning the need? If that's the case, I'd be frustrated, too.

And yeah... my family doesn't have dental insurance, either.

I too have no insurance at all (medical or dental)...can't wait until I do, it's been almost 10 years since I've had a check up for both! Yikes. As far as I can tell though I am in semi good heath and my teeth seem to be holding up (I am very orally conscious, must be clean!) But I too don't think this diet will help your teeth, it may prevent new things from happening, but it probably won't reverse the damage that has already been done.

Some insurance plans cover dental. Some don't. But since the economy is tanking, the dentists in my area are having a "price war" to remain competitive. So you might want to shop around and see what's happening in your area.
